West Indies Beat England in Test Cricket Match To Win Series 1-0

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP) — West Indies crushed England by 10 wickets in the third and final cricket Test on Sunday to win the series 1-0.

The hosts needed only 4.5 overs on Day 4 to reach the winning target in Grenada. West Indies finished on 28-0 in the second innings after earlier dismissing England for 120.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite was 20 not out and John Campbell undefeated on 6.

When England resumed on 103-8, it was already on the brink of defeat with a lead of only 10 runs with just two wickets in hand in its second innings. The visitors lasted another 11 overs in the opening session with Kemar Roach (2-10) taking both England wickets — Chris Woakes (19) and Jack Leach (4).

The result means England's failure to win a test series in the Caribbean in 18 years carries on. It is likely to extend the debate over Joe Root's suitability as captain, despite his superb batting form with two centuries in the series.

West Indies enjoyed its first Test series win at home since 2019. That was when England last visited.

As Ukraine Shudders, Donald Trump Calls Vladimir Putin's Incursion 'Pretty Smart' The former president made his remarks at an event at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Wednesday night. On Tuesday, he called Putin's strategy "genius."

 Wednesday, Feb 23, 2022

With millions of Ukrainians fearing for their lives Wednesday night amid reports of an imminent Russian invasion of their country, former President Donald Trump said Russian leader Vladimir Putin was “pretty smart” for sparking what could be the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II.

“He’s taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. I’d say that’s pretty smart,” Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to New York Times reporter Shane Goldmacher and video footage obtained by the pro-Democratic group American Bridge. “He’s taking over a country, really a vast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, just walking right in.” The former U.S. commander in chief added, “This would

have never happened, ever in a million years,” and said he understands Putin, seemingly suggesting that President Joe Biden is mismanaging the situation in Ukraine, where Putin has decided to support Russian-backed separatists’ bid to break up the country and has dispatched Russian troops. Biden this week imposed sanctions on Russian institutions and officials and warned far tougher action could follow.

“Now they laugh at us,” Trump said of U.S. adversaries, according to Goldmacher.

Queen holds weekly call with PM as she battles on despite Covid infection Her Majesty, 95, is continuing to experience mild cold-like symptoms after testing positive for coronavirus on Sunday and has been self-isolating at Windsor Castle

The Queen is recovering from her bout of Covid and managed today to hold her weekly audience with the Prime Minister.

The 95-year-old monarch is continuing to experience mild cold-like symptoms after testing positive for coronavirus on Sunday and has been self-isolating at Windsor Castle.

A number of palace staff who work and care for Her Majesty are also understood to have been hit by the virus in the last few days.

Concerns for the nation’s longest reigning monarch have been heightened in recent days, given her age and recent health scares, including an overnight stay in hospital last October to undergo a series of tests and a back sprain the following month.

Buckingham Palace had insisted the Queen, who is triple vaccinated, would this week be continuing light duties at her desk.

Judge Michelle Odinet
12/14/2021 09:55pm ESTA judge in Louisiana, Michelle Odinet, has asked for “forgiveness and understanding” after a video surfaced capturing a series of racist remarks as her family gathered to watch security footage of an attempted burglary at their home.

A Black man was reportedly arrested in connection with the burglary at the Lafayette City Court judge’s home in Bendel Gardens over the weekend. A video that circulated after the incident appeared to show members of her family joking and using the N-word to recap the burglary while they watched the security footage. Odinet, who has four children, confirmed to local news site The Current that the footage was from her home. It’s unclear who shot it, who exactly is using the language and who sent it to several members of the local media.

The site also published the video, which contains disturbing and explicit language amid joking and laughter.

At one point, a voice is heard saying, “And mom’s yelling n****r, n****r,” to which a woman’s voice answered: “We have a n****r. It’s a n****r, like a roach.” more

REST IN PEACE: Robbie Shakespeare of Sly and Robbie fame has died at 68 y-o

December 8, 2021

Robbie Shakespeare, one half of the powerhouse rhythm duo of Sly and Robbie, has died.

A close associate confirmed his passing to The Gleaner a short while ago.

Shakespeare had reportedly been ailing for some time and had undergone surgery related to his kidneys. He was living overseas and was in hospital in Florida.

In July last year, he placed at Number 17 on 'The 50 Greatest Bassists of All Time list', compiled by the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine. When The Gleaner reached out to the Grammy award-winning bassist at the time, he said he was humbled by the recognition,

Robbie Shakespeare
"Bwoy, I appreciate the fact that others looking in can see what we are doing for the music. This makes me feel like a baby." The A-lister, whose fingers have lovingly stroked the chords on many hit songs for artistes, including Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Dylan and Peter Tosh, spoke passionately of the value of hard work while subtly throwing shade at the 'entitlement' culture.

"No matter how much people hail Sly and Robbie as the legends, and despite two Grammy wins and 11 nominations, we never ever feel like anything we get in life, we must get it. There have been a lot of sleepless nights and 'eatless' nights, too. Nuff time we go to bed hungry, so we remember these things and take stock. There are so many other great bassists out there who they could have chosen, and yet they chose me, and I am grateful," Robbie Shakespeare told The Gleaner.

Chanel Smith
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – Teachers at the Sandy Bank
primary and basic schools in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, believe they have been robbed following the killing of one of their colleagues Tuesday morning.

Chanel Smith, who at the time of her death worked at the basic school but taught at the primary school prior to that, was shot dead by gunmen near the school gate.

“This is an angel that they took away from us,” one teacher told OBSERVER ONLINE. “She was molding the children helping them to achieve their dreams and look what they did.”

The teacher described Smith as someone who was very humble and quiet. “I've never heard her raise her voice yet,” she recalled. “When she started we were wondering if she was in the right field. When she spoke, you could hardly hear her.”

Chanel Smith
She said Smith got better at her craft overtime until she became one of the most-loved teachers at the institution. Police reported that shortly before 8 am, Smith was about to enter the school when one of two men, who were near the gate pretending to fix a motorcycle, pulled a gun and shot her several times. She was rushed to hospital where she died.
