The man who gave his name as Dwitt Blackwood was arrested after the police allegedly found him with US$550 in counterfeit notes, four fake J$1000 bills and J$13,500 that he had apparently received in exchange for the counterfeit foreign currency he tendered to shop owners. According to a sergeant at the station, the only real foreign currency Blackwood had in his possession was a US$20 bill.
The police also seized goods he had purchased with the counterfeit bills including tins of a popular energy drink, a variety of liquor and a number of phone cards. Corporal Cleveland McCalla, one of officers involved in the capture of the accused, said that Blackwood would be taken to the Spanish Town police station where further investigations would be conducted. Read more:

A rare find in JAMAICA: Japanese firms says Jamaica’s earth minerals could help them break China’s hold on market

JAPANESE firm Nippon Light Metals Company yesterday revealed that its motivation in spearheading the US$5-million rare earth elements pilot project with the Government of Jamaica is to try to break China's hold on the market.
Operations manager for the project, Tsuyoshi Kawarasaki, told the Jamaica Observer at the opening of the pilot plant yesterday that, given the higher concentration of rare earth elements in Jamaica's red mud deposits compared to global competitors, the island held the key to making Nippon's goal a reality.

"The Jamaican red mud is very excellent compared to the other red mud all over the world, so we chose Jamaican bauxite," he said. Some 17 rare earth elements -- including scandium, yttrium, cerium and erbium -- are to be found in red mud, but Nippon's target, Kawarasaki said, is dysprosium (Dy) which is found in large quantities in China and used in the manufacture of lasers and magnets.
"Our target is Dy, a material or manganate only found in China. China is controlling the market, so we must compete with them," he said. read more:

ABUJA/LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Pirates have attacked an oil supply vessel off the Nigerian coast and kidnapped the captain and chief engineer, both U.S. citizens, security sources said on Thursday.

Pirate attacks off Nigeria's coast have jumped by a third this year as ships passing through West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, a major commodities route, have increasingly come under threat from gangs wanting to snatch cargoes and crews.

The U.S.-flagged, C-Retriever, owned by U.S. marine transport group Edison Chouest Offshore, was attacked in the early hours of Wednesday, UK-based security firm AKE and two security sources said. The company was not immediately available for comment. read more

Baby Born With HIV In Remission, Tests Suggest

Doctors now have convincing evidence that they put HIV into remission, hopefully for good, in a Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus — a medical first that is prompting a new look at how hard and fast such cases should be treated.
The case was reported earlier this year but some doctors were skeptical that the baby was really infected rather than testing positive because of exposure to virus in the mom's blood.
The new report, published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, makes clear that the girl, now 3, was infected in the womb. She was treated unusually aggressively and shows no active infection despite stopping AIDS medicines 18 months ago.
Doctors won't call it a cure because they don't know what proof or how much time is needed to declare someone free of HIV infection, long feared to be permanent. read more

Jamaica risks Olympic ban in row over drug-testing inquiry

Jamaica was on the brink of being cast into the international wilderness after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) vowed to take action that could mean the island is deemed non-compliant with its drug-testing responsibilities.

In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, WADA President John Fahey delivered a withering rebuke to Jamaica over its "farcical" attempts to defer an extraordinary audit of its anti-doping programme until the New Year. WADA Director General David Howman had planned to lead a commission to Jamaica after being invited by the island's prime minister to investigate revelations from the former executive director of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) that it conducted no drug tests in the five months leading up to last year's Olympics.

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN): 'Wind shear' suspected in Laos crash that killed 49

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Five bodies recovered from Lao Airlines crash, 44 still missing
  • Flight was headed from Vientiane to Pakse, Laos, Thai official says
  • Remnants of Typhoon Nari have been hitting the area
  • The plane was preparing to land amid heavy gusts of wind and rain
Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Lao Airlines is investigating that possibility that a plane crash that killed 49 people Wednesday was caused by "wind shear," an airline official said. Wind shear -- a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance -- has been a factor in many air disasters.
Chalerm Taiyalad, a Lao Airlines vice-president, said it was raining heavily at the time Flight QV301 was approaching for landing at Pakse Airport, near the Thai border, after departing from the capital Vientiane.
The plane was a twin-engine turboprop ATR 72, similar to this Lao Airlines ATR-72 500, photographed in 2011.Gusts from the remnants of Typhoon Nari appeared to have caused the pilots to lose control of the ATR 72 aircraft, he said. The ATR 72 propeller plane was preparing to land when a gust of wind appeared to push it away from the airport, and it crashed on or near an island in the Mekong River, reported KPL, the national news agency. read more
