Simple Skin Test May Detect Alzheimer's And Parkinson's Years In Advance, Study Says

The Huffington Post By Yagana Shah Email Posted: 02/25/2015 1:48 pm EST
While severe problems with the memory and the nervous system are hallmarks of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's respectively, it's the skin that could detect the disease early on, perhaps even before symptoms surface.
SKIN TEST

new study says a simple skin test could be the next breakthrough in predicting the onset of neurodegenerative diseases before obvious symptoms appear. Researchers from the University of San Luis Potosi predicted that evidence of the diseases could be found in skin samples, as brain and skin tissues have the same origin. They studied 53 people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and dementia, taking samples of skin tissue in a minimally invasive procedure, and compared them against the samples of 12 healthy people.
As they'd expected, people with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's had seven times the amount of tau protein, which forms problem-causing tangles in the brain, as the healthy control group. The Parkinson's group also had eight times the amount of alpha-synuclein protein, which some studies say is related to the risk of developing the disease.
The study has some limitations due to its relatively small scope, but researchers say the method could improve future research in the area. There is currently no cure for Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, but early detection and treatment are stressed for managing the diseases. Diagnosis typically consists of lab tests, brain imaging, andphysical exams, though recent research has come up with more unconventional ways of detection. In 2013, researchers experimented with a peanut-butter smell test for Alzheimer's and a blood test for Parkinson's. more

UPDATE: Lawyer says Dancehall artist, Admiral Bailey has explanation..."I indicated that the travel documents they are alleging are fraudulent are documents that he [Admiral] has been using for over 25 years. I am satisfied that when the matter comes before the court, we will be able to offer an explanation...," Tavares-Finson told the Jamaica Observer.

TOM Tavares-Finson, attorney-at-law representing deejay Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey, said charges brought against his client are a misunderstanding.

"I indicated that the travel documents they are alleging are fraudulent are documents that he [Admiral] has been using for over 25 years. I am satisfied that when the matter comes before the court, we will be able to offer an explanation...," Tavares-Finson told the Jamaica Observer.
Admiral Bailey, whose given name is Glendon Bailey, was slapped with fraud-related charges when he attempted to renew a passport in the name Micheal George Sullivan at the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency on Monday.
He is booked to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Thursday, March 5.
Admiral Bailey is charged with two counts of uttering forged documents, two counts of obtaining passport by false pretence, two counts of possession of forged documents, one count of attempting to obtain a passport by false pretence, and one count of conspiracy to defraud.
"Admiral Bailey is someone who is highly regarded by many members of society and not as someone who has been associated with any criminality or even the hint of criminality," said Tavares-Finson.
A cross-over artiste in his own right, Admiral Bailey started his career as a dancehall duo with Chaka Demus, their hit One Scotch (Boops Riddim, Jammys Records) introduced to the mainstream. As a solo act, Bailey went on to rule the 1980s and '90s with hits including Big Belly Man, Think Me Did Done, and Heathly Body. With the assistance of musician Byron Lee, he won over to soca fans with Dancehall Soca and Soca Butterfly.
He has had a successful career in football at the national level, leading Olympic Gardens to the Premiere League and making Tivoli Gardens Football Club multiple winners of the trophy. more

IN JAMAICA: Residents agonise over gruesome murder of 14-year-old Santoya Campbell...."Him wicked. Rope feh go round him neck and hang him because him kill the pickney," an enraged community member lashed out.

BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter  Thursday, February 26, 2015
ALTHOUGH 14-year-old Santoya Campbell was last Saturday laid to rest here, three days after 37-yearold Cornelius Robinson was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her, members of her Logwood, Shrewsbury community are still in shock over the teen's horrific end.

Like several other members of the rustic farming community, Veniesha Hill is of the view that the penalty handed down for such a gruesome crime was a mere slap on the wrist. Hill strongly believes that Robinson, a fashion designer and photo studio operator, should instead have been given a death sentence for the Janury 26 murder.
"Him wicked. Rope feh go round him neck and hang him because him kill the pickney," an enraged Hill lashed out. But father of the deceased, 75-year-old Felix Campbell, who lives outside the community but frequents Logwood, was contented with the sentence handed down by Justice Martin Gayle in the Westmoreland Circuit Court last week. "Let me tell you something, I loved my daughter. [And] I am very satisfied with the judge's action. I am not going to say I am not satisfied. I am very, very satisfied. It is only because I can't get her back," the broken-hearted father, who describes himself as a carpenter and cane-cutter, told the Jamaica Observer West on the weekend.
However, while the father was willing to speak to the Observer West team, Pauline Ferguson, Santoya's mother, was reluctant. She chided the Observer for reporting the testimony given by the convict in court that it was she who approached him to supply the child with lunch money.
"Everything over and she [Santoya] bury yesterday [Saturday] so what unoo come bout again?" said the
seemingly distressed mother. "Don't talk to them!" was her daughter's [Shanika> more

"No Trench Town, no school" chanted some of the placard-bearing students.
The action of the protesting students forced teachers and other staff members to stand outside the compound and watch.
The padlocks were removed following intervention of a senior education officer and Member of Parliament for the St Andrew Southern Dr Omar Davies, in whose constituency the school is located.
"We are frustrated and angry about the plan to merge Trench Town and Charlie Smith. Trench Town is a school with a rich history, it is an institution that has helped to uplift a lot of young people in the community; this is unacceptable," said one parent who supported the action of the students.
Dr Davies, however, chided the behaviour of the students and their parents.

"I don't take lightly the padlocking of the gate. If you have a grievance, that grievance should be heard in a professional way," said Davies.
He added that not only did he think that the approach taken by the students was disrespectful, but that the approach was an intimidatory tactic. more

The NCB Group chairman Michael Lee-Chin oversaw the handing over of a $30-million cheque at the club's University of Technology base in St Andrew yesterday as part of a project to give student athletes nutritional and medical support.
"NCB have said to us that they believe we will continue to develop the best athletes in the world right here in Jamaica. It's rewarding to know that your efforts are respected and appreciated," James told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
"They (NCB Foundation) want to make sure that the nutritional and health needs of our student athletes and developmental athletes are met and that's specifically what the funds are for. These athletes, in a lot of cases, are not in a financial position to meet those needs themselves.
"The nature of track and field is that they are pushing their bodies to the maximum and injuries are part of the sport, so without the funding athletes can't survive." more

So-Called Buying Of Student Athletes To Come To An End? Audio

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites has tabled a ministry paper in parliament outlining measures aimed at stopping the so-called buying of student athletes by schools.
Describing the practice as unethical, Thwaites says the primary goal of a school is the formal education of students. He says there should be no transfer of students primarily for sporting activities without due consideration for their academic development. Education minister, Ronald Thwaites.
The new regulations stipulate that the sending and receiving schools and parents must sign consent forms before presentation to the Ministry of Education for approval of the request to transfer a student. Thwaites says the ministry will review the student’s academic record to determine if he or she is able to cope with the curriculum of the receiving school.
In addition, Thwaites says the transfer of students between schools must not involve economic gain to the student, parent or guardian and their involvement in sports should not compromise their educational advancement. Thwaites also says Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association will continue to impose a mandatory one-year wait period, but will add the option of additional waiting periods or school bans where there are proven breaches in the transfer process.
However, Opposition members took issue with the new measures with Derrick Smith saying the measures should be withdrawn as they impinge on individual rights:

9 Ways To Fall Asleep Faster (Without Counting Sheep)....Approximately 60 million Americans report having experienced insomnia in any given year, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Even worse, 40 million Americans suffer from long-term sleep disorders...the health risks associated with missed Zzs can include poor cognitive function, problems with attention and concentration, dementia and an increased risk of heart disease..

By Alex Orlov for Life by DailyBurn
If you feel wide awake when your head hits the pillow at night, you're not alone. Approximately 60 million Americans report having experienced insomnia in any given year, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Even worse, 40 million Americans suffer from long-term sleep disorders.
COUNTING SHEEPMissing sleep is nothing to yawn about. "Chronic sleep deprivation has lots of negative consequences," says Sonia Ancoli-Israel, fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She notes that the health risks associated with missed Zzs can include poor cognitive function, problems with attention and concentration, dementia and an increased risk of heart disease.
Why Every Night Of Sleep Matters
Are you getting enough shut-eye? Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep a night, according to Ancoli-Israel. "People are so busy in their everyday lives and something has to give. They give up on sleep rather than something else," she says.
If you get tense and worried about not being able to sleep, your frustrated mindset could make it even harder to relax.
Even if you don't suffer from insomnia, odds are you've experienced nights when you've tossed and turned, wondering why you can't drift off. "Everyone has a bad night now and then," says Ancoli-Israel. But if you get tense and worried about not being able to sleep, your frustrated mindset could make it even harder to relax into slumber the following nights.
The consequences of missing even a few hours of sleep can be serious. Research shows that short-term sleep deprivation can cause you to crave high carbohydrate and high sugar foods. It can even make it harder to choose healthy options when grocery shopping. Plus, one sobering study revealed that drowsy drivers who had been awake for 18 hours were just as impaired as drivers who had been drinking. more

Thorpe, alias 'Chiney Man', was reportedly shot dead by the police about 9:00 pm Sunday at a dance in the community.
According to residents, the 35-year-old Thorpe was at the dance being held a short distance from his home when police surrounded the area. Thorpe, the residents claimed, was called by police officers who forced him around a corner, after which a number of shots were heard.
He was allegedly found with his mouth gagged and bullet wounds to his chest.
"A girl (woman) at the bar was listening to hear if he was going to scream or anything, but the police stuffed his mouth with his 'kerchief and started shooting him," a distraught sister Shaniel Thorpe told the Jamaica Observer.
"Just like that; they shoot him and then took him up and drove off with him. That's not right, we want justice," she added.
Thorpe was a part-time worker at Kingston Container Terminal. He is survived by three children, among them a two-month-old girl.
Mother of the two-month-old, Nardia Hunt, told the Observer that he was the sole breadwinner for the family.
The Riverton residents claimed that two policemen have been involved in a number of shootings in the community although there has been no recent flare-up of violence.
"One of them is after my brother too," one resident explained. "All the while dem coming down here like dem want to kill somebody, and look what happen. Oneil should have been at work now."
Another sister of the deceased, Delores Thorpe, said the police were trying to cover up what she called the cold-blooded murder of her brother by claiming that he was killed in a shoot-out with the police. more
