Bangkok, Thailand (CNN): 'Wind shear' suspected in Laos crash that killed 49

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Five bodies recovered from Lao Airlines crash, 44 still missing
  • Flight was headed from Vientiane to Pakse, Laos, Thai official says
  • Remnants of Typhoon Nari have been hitting the area
  • The plane was preparing to land amid heavy gusts of wind and rain
Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Lao Airlines is investigating that possibility that a plane crash that killed 49 people Wednesday was caused by "wind shear," an airline official said. Wind shear -- a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance -- has been a factor in many air disasters.
Chalerm Taiyalad, a Lao Airlines vice-president, said it was raining heavily at the time Flight QV301 was approaching for landing at Pakse Airport, near the Thai border, after departing from the capital Vientiane.
The plane was a twin-engine turboprop ATR 72, similar to this Lao Airlines ATR-72 500, photographed in 2011.Gusts from the remnants of Typhoon Nari appeared to have caused the pilots to lose control of the ATR 72 aircraft, he said. The ATR 72 propeller plane was preparing to land when a gust of wind appeared to push it away from the airport, and it crashed on or near an island in the Mekong River, reported KPL, the national news agency. read more

IN JAMAICA: Society must take proactive responsibility for its children

As we celebrate our national heritage and the contribution of our heroes, it is always useful to also contemplate how we can improve on various aspects of national life. It is probably not unreasonable for someone — not necessarily a cynic — to say that those aspects are too numerous to tally.
Police stay close to the action

 where most of the irregular
activities occur. Above is a scene
from the exuberant teenagers.

That may be. For today, though, this newspaper wishes to focus on something that we believe is a major hindrance to the achievement of goals and objectives at all levels of national life. We refer to a most unfortunate inclination — perhaps fuelled by our laid-back culture — to allow small problems to become huge.
A prime example is this vexing issue of teenagers causing chaos at the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre on a Friday afternoon. Sunday Observer stories pointing to unruly, anti-social and even criminal behaviour among students at the centre have caused consternation. We are told that, in addition to behaving badly, many students use the transport centre as a venue to meet and 'lyme' on a Friday, rather than promptly going home.Read more:

There is another Charlie Chaplin, born Richard Bennet, who has made his mark. Not the same kind of mark, mind you, but one for which the Jamaican Government found important enough to honour him with the Order of Distinction (Officer rank).
While the honour is undoubtedly well earned, there are many, especially of a younger generation, who do not know who Charlie Chaplin is.
Bennet's career began 33 years ago when he began working with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi Collective. Interestingly, his popularity climbed inJamaica because he avoided the classic dancehall route of glorifying the more debauched elements of the environment.
His cultural bent made him an enigma, and by the time he released his first album, Presenting Charlie Chaplin, in 1982, he was already a household name. read more

By JULIE PACE, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON--President Barack Obama is expected to acknowledge that widespread problems with his health care law's rollout are unacceptable, as the administration scrambles to fix the glitches.
Obama was scheduled to speak Monday from the Rose Garden, his first health care-focused event since the cascade of computer problems became apparent. The troublesome rollout of the health care exchanges has been a glaring embarrassment for Obama's signature legislative achievement.
White House officials say the president will discuss steps the administration is taking to address the glitches, including ramping up staffing at call centers where people can apply for insurance by phone. The Department of Health and Human Services says it is also bringing in technology experts from inside and outside of government to help diagnose the issues. read more

New plan to cut down on credit card fraud

By Clark Howard

The days of entering your credit card number to shop online may be over.
In an unusual move, archrivals Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are proposing a new industry standard to make online shopping more secure. While the details are still being decided, this interoperable technology will likely center on the use of digital payment "tokens" for online and mobile transactions.

In plain English, that means you'll have to complete a one-time set-up for each device you have -- laptop, PC, tablet, smartphone -- thus giving it a unique code and tying it to your credit card. The token then eliminates the need for a merchant to have your credit card number at all. read more

Facing Down Racism - Skyfall Actor Plays 'The Scottsboro Boys', A Tale About The Biggest Race Trial In American History

The nine Scottsboro Boys.
The 9 Scottsboro Boys
Hot on the heels of his successful stint in the hit West End adaptation ofThe Color Purple, Bolaji is now undertaking a production of similar intensity, though the story itself is perhaps lesser known than Alice Walker's famous novel-turned-movie. Opening at The Young Vic, The Scottsboro Boys brings to life the infamous tale of the nine young black men, aged between 12 and 19, who, in Scottsboro, Alabama in 1931, had their lives turned upside down when they were falsely accused of raping two white women on a train.
Even though one of the women later recanted her accusation, and in spite of a total absence of evidence, the boys were convicted. Their subsequent trials and appeals threw issues of racism and the right to a fair trial into the forefront and deeply divided the nation. read more

10 Psychological Studies That Will Change What You Think You Know About Yourself

Why do we do the things we do? Despite our best attempts to "know thyself," the truth is that we often know astonishingly little about our own minds, and even less about the way others think. As Charles Dickens once put it, “A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”
Psychology ExperimentPsychologists have long sought insights into how we perceive the world and what motivates our behavior, and they've made enormous strides in lifting that veil of mystery. Aside from providing fodder for stimulating cocktail-party conversations, some of the most famous psychological experiments of the past century reveal universal and often surprising truths about human nature. Here are 10 classic psychological studies that may change the way you understand yourself.

Principal Raped Boy In Office While Parent Was Outside: Cops

WNCN: News, Weather for Raleigh. Durham, Fayetteville
A former middle school principal in North Carolina is accused of sexually assaulting a student while the boy's unsuspecting parent was outside the room.
David Ellis Edwards, 49, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree forcible sex offense, sexual acts with a student, taking indecent liberties with a minor and crimes against nature, WTVD reported.
Deputies say that between 2009 and 2011, Edwards molested at least three boys between the ages of 11 and 14. At least one of the incidents allegedly occurred in Edward's office while the victim's parent sat in a nearby waiting area.
Edwards resigned from his position at Douglas Byrd Middle School, where he had been principal since 2010, in August, WNCN reported. Before that, he was principal of Ramsey Street Alternative School. Officials believe that all of the sexual assaults took place on the campuses of these two schools. Authorities have also noted they "believe there were more than the three victims,"sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna told the Fayetteville Observer. read more
