The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) will shortly be inviting proposals for the management of a food bazaar, which will be part of a $100-million multi-faceted commercial project aimed at injecting new life into downtown Kingston.

The bazaar is among the first components of what will be called a festival marketplace in the business district, which successive governments have, for some time, promised to revitalise.
Director of Corporate Communication at the UDC Lorna Clarke told the Jamaica Observer that under phase one, which will take place from February to May 2015, the bazaar would be constructed on the lawns of the Victoria Craft Market, while landscaping and beautification are to be carried out along the waterfront between Victoria Pier and the craft market.
“The overall festival marketplace development will require significant private investment and planning towards this is in progress,” Clarke said, explaining that the UDC would be responsible for maintenance for phase one works, supported by the income expected from the rental of food and beverage kiosks.
Last month, UDC Chairman KD Knight announced the 8.9 acre development, stating that the aim was to keep downtown active after regular business hours. An office complex is also to be built in the area.
The festival marketplace will be an extension of the renewed market and commercial districts, and the ending point of the existing east-west pedestrian arcade and promenade. more
