CHRISTIE'S MANSION OF SKETCHINESS: Chris Christie's Mansion Fund Collected Millions From Political Favor Seekers.....Prudential itself has given gifts totaling at least $150,000 over the last several years.

WASHINGTON -- In January 2010, as newly elected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) took office, there was a major change at the top of the Drumthwacket Foundation, a nonprofit that has restored and helps maintain the majestic, white-columned governor's mansion in Princeton, N.J.
John Strangfeld, the chairman of insurance giant Prudential, and his wife, Mary Kay Strangfeld, volunteered to serve in the top two positions on the foundation's board. They were elected chairman and vice chairman, respectively, by the rest of the board that same month.
The posts may have appeared largely ceremonial. But within the Christie universe, they were significant. The governor and his family don't live at the mansion, but the first couple is invested in its restoration and upkeep. In 2012, Chris and Mary Pat Christie hosted 72 events there, or about one every five days. The governor is the honorary chairman of the Drumthwacket Foundation. His wife is the president.
The Strangfelds, in turn, played the role of fundraiser. Behind the scenes, they helped raise money from other donors to ensure the foundation's success, and they were good at it. Prudential itself has given gifts totaling at least $150,000 over the last several years.
In November 2011, as the foundation's revenues skyrocketed, the Christie administration awarded Prudential a record-setting $250 million tax incentive to move its Newark headquarters a few blocks down the street, to a shiny new glass office tower. more

President Barack Obama called A 'Subhuman Mongrel' by a Republican......Rick Perry: I Have A Problem With Ted Nugent Calling Obama A 'Subhuman Mongrel'......Rand Paul: He Should Apologize.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) said he takes issue with rocker Ted Nugent calling President Barack Obama a "subhuman mongrel."
"I wouldn't have used those words," Perry told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Thursday. Perry quickly shifted from Nugent's comments, telling Blitzer people need to be focused on things like jobs instead.

"The idea that Ted Nugent has said something that's outrageous shouldn't surprise anybody. He's been saying outrageous things for a lot of years," Perry added. "He shouldn't have said that about the president of the United States." Perry addressed the issue earlier Thursday after a breakfast appearance before the Texas State Society, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“That’s Ted Nugent…That’s just Ted. Anybody that’s offended -- sorry, but that’s just Ted,” Perry said. “I don’t take offense, no. If we would spend a whole lot more time talking about how to create jobs instead of trying to pick apart people’s descriptions of somebody, we’d probably get a lot further along in life.” more

Business in JAMAICA: Gov't expects US$500m from private sector partnerships......it is possible to realise capital investments amounting to in excess of half a billion US dollars

GOVERNMENT expects to earn over US$500 million from partnering with the private sector in operating it air and sea ports.
Dr. Peter Phillips
The transactions aim to save the cash-strapped government capital expenditure on these assets. These include the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), Kingston Container Terminal (KCT) and Port Community System.
The government expects to earn from taxes, concession fees, capital expansion works. It also expects greater technology transfers and efficiencies from the transfers. The assets would be transfered via Public/private partnerships which are government services or ventures operated by the private sector. Among the types of PPP projects that are commonly provided are roads, utilities, buildings, schools, and hospitals.
"Based on our financial modeling and forecasts it is possible to realise capital investments amounting to in excess of half a billion US dollars over the concession period when all of these are combined," indicated finance minister Dr Peter Phillips in his address at the public/private partnership conference held at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Thursday. "For example the privatisation of KCT is expected to stimulate economic growth — not just in the investment — but the further development of Jamaica as a logistic centre of the Caribbean." more

Malcolm X was more than King’s alter ego..... TODAY is the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X .

Friday marks the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, and the 20th-century icon is still making headlines.
Malcolm X
His memory remains contested and debated, as witnessed by the recent controversies over his depiction in rapper Nicki Minaj’s cover art and a Queens, N.Y., public school teacher forbidding students to write about him during Black History Month out of ignorance over his true political and historical legacy, describing Malcolm as too “violent.”
Malcolm X, though, stood astride the world stage alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, and should be remembered as a working-class hero.
He’s frequently reduced to being King’s opposite number: eloquent, but angry. But in reality, Malcolm X became black America’s unofficial prime minister, a brilliant and prophetic activist, organizer and intellectual whose life reminds us of the possibilities of a liberated future in America and beyond.
Malcolm’s outsized status as one of black America’s most enduring and important icons makes it easy to lose sight of his humble origins. Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Earl and Louise Little, pioneering black nationalists who followed the teachings of Marcus Garvey. As a teenager he came of age during the global freedom surges of the early 1940s, but drifted, in between short stints at various blue-collar jobs, into the criminal underworlds of Detroit, Harlem and Boston, which eventually landed him in jail for almost seven years. more

MANDEVILLE, JAMAICA: Monstrous cave attack! Two teenagers remanded, another on the run after gruesome attempt to kill 17-y-o boy......"Those guys (must) be put away. They are monsters in our society,"

BY ALICIA SUTHERLAND Observer staff reporter sutherlanda@jamaicaobserver.com
Friday, February 21, 2014

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Two teens charged in connection with the attempted murder of one of their peers, who was left to die in a cave, were remanded when they appeared in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Anthony Forbes, 18, is before the Court on a charge of attempted murder, while a 16-year-old (name withheld because he is a minor) is charged with conspiracy to murder.
The two are to return to Court on March 12.
The police have confirmed that they are searching for a third teenager, a 17-year-old boy, alleged to have been involved in the crime.
Robert Cleary, father of the injured 17-year-old who is recovering in hospital under police protection, told the Jamaica Observer that he believes the teenager on the run is extremely dangerous.
"Those guys (must) be put away. They are monsters in our society," said Cleary.
The police have confirmed that the fugitive, a high school student, has a case pending in the Porus Children's Court for stabbing another youngster late last year in his community of New Hall, central Manchester.
He was reporting to the Mandeville Criminal Investigation Bureau according to the conditions of his bail.

VYBZ KARTEL MURDER TRIAL ENDING: Waiting for verdict as Prosecution, defence score on closing arguments....Kartel painted as an arrogant, conceited person who thought he was above the law when he plotted to murder Williams over two missing guns.

LEAD prosecutor Jeremy Taylor and defence attorney Miguel Lorne both scored crucial points during their closing arguments in the Vybz Kartel murder trial in the High Court in downtown Kingston yesterday.
Continuing his marathon presentation, which began on Tuesday, Taylor launched into convincing arguments as to why Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer) and the other four accused — Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell,
Kahira Jones, André St John and Shane Williams — should be convicted of the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.
He painted Kartel as an arrogant, conceited person who thought he was above the law when he plotted to murder Williams over two missing guns.
He said Kartel seemed to be expressing glee when he referred to Williams as 'mince meat' in a BlackBerry message.
"He thinks I am untouchable, I am the Worl' Boss, nothing can happen to me," Taylor told the jurors.
Referring to text and BlackBerry messages extracted from a phone ascribed to Kartel, Taylor pointed out that when Kartel discovered that he was a murder suspect he tried everything to flee the island fast.
"Police were looking at the house so he wanted to be outside of Jamaica," he said.
He also looked back at the evidence of the prosecution's star witness who testified under oath that he was inside the Swallowfield, Havendale house when Williams was attacked and had to flee for his life. more

VYBZ KARTEL MURDER TRIAL: Prosecution rips into defence's argument of conspiracy to convict Kartel

LEAD prosecutor Jeremy Taylor ripped into arguments put forth by defence attorney Tom Tavares-Finson that the police had hatched a conspiracy to convict his client Vybz Kartel, during his closing remarks in the murder trial at the Supreme Court yesterday.
Kartel
Using quotes from the Bible, a former British parliamentarian and comparisons to a series of movies, Taylor painted a picture of an alleged plot by Vybz Kartel to kill Clive 'Lizard' Williams over two missing guns.
"There is no moral or ethical dilemma or crisis in this case. What you are required to do is weigh the evidence. Look at credibility and reliability. Do aspects of the case add up or is it a scattershot?" he told the 11-member panel of jurors.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn 'Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones, Andre St John, and Shane Williams are jointly charged with 'Lizard's' alleged murder. In telling the jurors that all the accused do not have to 'sink' with Vybz Kartel, Taylor poured cold water on the unsworn statement given by Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused even though he told the jurors they must consider it.
"It is not evidence. It is a lesser species than evidence but you must consider it. It is a right that they have. Evidence must be taken under oath," he said. Taylor continued where he left off on Tuesday in asking for justice for Williams. more

Buju again appeals drug conviction..... Banton was sentenced to 10 years in a Tampa, Florida, court for drug-related offences.

INCARCERATED reggae star Buju Banton has filed yet another appeal in the United States to reverse his conviction on drug charges.
Buju
The appeal by attorneys Professor Charles Ogletree, Jack Cushman and Max Stern was filed with the 11th US Circuit Court on February 4.
Ogletree, who is the head of the law department at Harvard University, said he accepted the offer to represent Banton -- whose real name is Mark Myrie -- because it was clear that he did not receive a fair trial.
"There is no way in the world he received a fair trial," Ogletree told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
After two trials, Banton was sentenced to 10 years in a Tampa, Florida, court for drug-related offences. However, information later emerged that jury foreman Teri Wright had defied an order from Judge Tim Moody and had studied aspects of the Pinkerton Law and Banton's music. The Pinkerton Law was used by the prosecution to convict Banton for using a telephone to facilitate a drug-trafficking offence.
The information came to light after Wright admitted her misconduct to a reporter. Wright was then ordered by the court to hand over a computer she had used to study the law, but instead handed over another computer. A computer forensics expert hired by Banton later proved that the hard drive on the computer had not been used for a number of years. more

Zimmerman chased by mob in Miami

KINGSTON, Jamaica — George Zimmerman has reportedly left Miami after being chased by a mob and told there is a US$10,000 bounty on his head.
DailyMail news reported that Zimmerman, 30, appeared on CNN Monday to accuse President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder of making him a “scapegoat”.
Zimmerman
It has emerged his words came hours after infuriated protesters ambushed him, his girlfriend and her son at a beach.
"Speaking on national television to Chris Cuomo, he revealed he still receives death threats seven months after he was acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin. He said he suffered a 'miscarriage of justice' in his trial for the killing of the Florida teen, and maintains that he acted in self-defense within the law," the report said.
When asked what he was being made a scapegoat for, he responded: “The government, the president, the attorney general.
I don’t know what they're thinking or why they're thinking it, all I know is that they're doing it. I don't know what agenda they have." more

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Defence attorney in the Vybz Kartel murder trial Christian Tavares-Finson Wednesday morning lodged a complaint against the heavy security in place at the Supreme Court and environs downtown Kingston.
Tavares-Finson complained that family members of the accused men were barred from entering the court while relatives of the victim Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams were allowed inside.
However Justice Lennox Campbell told Tavares-Finson that he was directing his concerns to the wrong forum.
Wednesday morning the police established a cordon from South Parade, King Street and Church Street and Harbour and King Street intersections barring traffic from approaching the courthouse. Anyone seeking to enter the courthouse, including members of the media, was searched by the cops.
On Tuesday evening the police announced a road closure and traffic changes downtown Kingston until Friday, but did not give a reason.

IN JAMAICA: Sigma Corporate Run delivers!.....Your Health Your Wealth

AFTER a six-year hiatus, 25-year-old Lancine Saunders decided to hit Sunday’s Sigma Corporate Run — a 5.5-kilometre road race — again. She told the Jamaica Observer that she had always been interested in participating, but just didn’t get around to it.
So, when her employers, Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), decided to register participants for the charity event, she jumped at the opportunity. Motivated, too, by her recent drive to be more health conscious, Saunders was surprised at how well organised the road race turned out.
“I have been taking my health and fitness seriously and have been trying to make healthier choices for about a month now,” she shared.
“Today (Sunday) was really good and I was pleasantly surprised at how well planned it was. I didn’t expect to get my results so quickly.”
But how did she prepare for the big day? According to Saunders, TPDCo started a fitness class two weeks prior to the road race, but due to time constraints she was unable to participate. more

VYBZ KARTEL TRIAL: Handwriting expert reiterates witness letter not forged.....“Any man on a galloping horse would come to the conclusion I have come to,”

THE defence handwriting expert in the Vybz Kartel murder trial said yesterday that he didn’t consider the element of forgery regarding a letter allegedly sent to the public defender by the key prosecution witness recanting a statement to the police.
He reiterated under cross examination by senior prosecutor Jeremy Taylor that he had had sufficient reason to conclude that the letter, which he later read during the trial, was written by the witness..
“Any man on a galloping horse would come to the conclusion I have come to,” said expert Karl Major, a retired senior superintendent of police, to much laughter inside the number two courtroom at the Home Circuit Court.
In the letter sent to the Office of the Public Defender on November 18, 2013, the writer outlined that the police had forced him to give a statement implicating Kartel and the other men in the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
“I am [name withheld]. I’m the witness in the Vybz Kartel cause [case],” Major read from the letter. “The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the statement taken by the police [...] wasn’t willing because I didn’t go freely to the police station. more

Singer Wayne Smith, whose computerised song Under Mi Sleng Teng revolutionised reggae, has died. Smith’s son, Tidel Smith, told the Jamaica Observer that his father died yesterday at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).
Wayne Smith, complained of
stomach pains
He was 48 years old. He said Smith was admitted to KPH Friday after complaining of stomach pains. His health improved on Sunday but yesterday it deteriorated and he died shortly after noon.
An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. Originally from Waterhouse, Smith started his career in 1980 with producer Lloyd ‘King Jammys’ James who produced Under Mi Sleng Teng four years later.
Under Mi Sleng Teng was orchestrated by Smith and musician Noel Daley on an inexpensive Casio keyboard. It was first played at dances on James’ sound system and got such strong response that James released the song in late 1984.
The ‘riddim’ of the same name produced numerous hit songs, including Pumpkin Belly by singer Tenor Saw.
Under Mi Sleng Teng was a trailblazer, triggering dancehall’s digital age.
It was Smith’s biggest hit, though he enjoyed more chart success with songs like Ain’t No Meaning In Saying Goodbye and Come Along. Smith, who operated the Sleng Teng label, is survived by his mother, May Coley, five children, three grandchildren, and five brothers and sisters. more
