Hope Hicks, one of President Trump’s most senior advisers, has tested positive for the coronavirus, three people familiar with the matter said.

Ms. Hicks is the closest known person to the president to have contracted the virus, which causes Covid-19. She traveled with Mr. Trump on Wednesday aboard Air Force One to Minnesota for a campaign rally in Duluth. Officials at the White House have known since Wednesday evening that she had the virus. Her condition was reported earlier by Bloomberg News, which also said that she had been quarantined on the return flight to Washington. It was unclear when she took the test that resulted in a positive diagnosis. Ms. Hicks also traveled with Mr. Trump to the first presidential debate against former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic nominee, on Tuesday in Ohio. Attendance at the event was significantly scaled back to prevent the spread of the coronavirus; people familiar with the planning said that Mr. Trump had wanted people in the audience.
