Thursday, September 28, 2017

ATLANTA, United States (CMC) — The Coca-Cola beverage company has donated more than US$6 million to hurricane and earthquake ravaged countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
The company, best known for its carbonated beverages, pledged US$4.3 million to aid recovery efforts following the devastation left across the Caribbean by category five hurricanes Irma and Maria.
The funds also went towards the recovery efforts after earthquakes rocked sections of Mexico. In addition, Coca-Cola's Latin Centre Business unit is supporting rebuilding efforts in St Kitts Nevis, Turks and Caicos and Barbuda with the donation of US$300,000.
“These are sad times for all of us in Coca-Cola Latin America,” said Alfredo Rivera, President of the company's Latin America Group.
“Our company and our bottlers stood up and responded very rapidly to the needs of the affected communities. We will be there as well to contribute to the reconstruction of the affected territories,” he added.
Coca-Cola Foundation also donated US $2 million, to match the figure it had previously given to The American Red Cross, towards relief aid for the southeastern United States and the Caribbean after the passage of hurricanes Irma and Harvey.
The Salvation Army was granted half of that sum to address immediate food and shelter needs in hurricane-impacted areas across the region. While the Red Cross in Mexico was given the additional US$1 million for earthquake relief. “The entire Coca-Cola system has come together to support the communities we serve and where our associates live and work. Serving our local communities is at the heart of what we do and, in this time of great need, we are fully committed to working with relief organizations and community leaders to support their immediate needs during recovery as well as the longer-term rebuilding efforts,” said President of Coca-Cola North America and Coca-Cola Foundation board member, Sandy Douglas.
According to Coca-Cola, local bottling partners are also committed to continuing to provide food, beverages and building materials in affected territories.
So far, the company has donated over 1.4 million bottles of water and other beverages to relief organisations.
Coca-Cola also pledged to match employee contributions up to US$100,000.

DEAD AGAIN : The GOP’s Latest Obamacare Repeal Bill Is Dead, .Graham-Cassidy Dies A Slow Death.... Republicans decided not to vote on the measure because they didn’t have enough support to pass it.

by Johnathan Cohn of Huffingtonpost 9/26/17
Republican leaders have decided not to vote on Obamacare repeal legislation this week, effectively ending the party’s latest effort to wipe away the 2010 health care law.
When, and whether, they will try again remains to be seen. But for now a defining cause of the Republican Party, including President Donald Trump, lies in tatters.

And at least for the moment, insurance coverage for many millions of Americans relying on Medicaid or the law’s federal subsidies remains intact. The decision came during a weekly caucus meeting on Capitol Hill, as leaders acknowledged that the the latest proposal, from Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), lacked the 50 votes it required to pass. “We don’t have the votes,” Cassidy said afterwards.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) had announced her intention to vote against the measure on Tuesday, joining two of her colleagues, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.). That left Republicans with just 49 votes, one short of the 50 they needed.

And the clock was ticking, because special authority allowing Republicans to pass repeal with a simple majority, rather than the 60 votes it takes to overcome a filibuster, ends on September 30.
“We basically ran out of time,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), a co-sponsor of the bill, said.

FACEBOOK NO NO : Things you shouldn't share about your relationship on Facebook

ALL WOMAN Monday, September 25, 2017 , BY FALON FOLKES
BRAGGING or complaining about aspects of their relationship on Facebook has become a common practice among some couples. However, doing this can affect trust, respect and emotional security, which counsellor Angela Daniels says are some characteristics of a healthy relationship.
“The details and occurrences within an intimate relationship are personal and private, as they are usually expressions of deep personal feelings, thoughts, secrets and weaknesses. The public disclosure of such information breaches confidentiality, trust, respect, and usually results in a decline or cessation of emotional security,” Daniels told All Woman.
“This can increase and intensify conflicts within the relationship, which could lead to deterioration in the health of the relationship.”
She said trusting your partner means that you believe that they are reliable, you can confide in them and that you feel emotionally safe with them. Respecting them means that you are thoughtful, courteous and value your partner's thoughts and feelings, and emotional security means feeling emotionally safe in the relationship. This includes trust and supporting your partner.
You might want to tell the entire world that you are happy in the relationship and are having an abundance of fun, but posting every moment is not good for the relationship, Daniels said. While some highlights are OK to post, she said you should never post the following online:
1. Information pertaining to frustrations and fights with your partner
These incidents should be between you both, or between you both and a counsellor, and should never be aired for the world to see. So if your husband is making you mad with his cheating, or if your wife keeps the house in a mess and you're frustrated, discuss it privately, but don't post it. more

MOST WANTED IN JAMAICA IS KILLED BY POLICE:Marlon 'Duppy Film' Perry dead.... Police take out most wanted criminal in St Thomas firefight

BY KIMBERLEY HIBBERT Observer staff reporter hibberk@jamaicaobserver.com  Monday, September 25, 2017

As he lived, so he died, clutching the gun, his favourite tool in a long reign of terror.
Marlon “Duppy Film” Perry, one of Jamaica's most wanted criminals, met his end in a hail of police bullets yesterday at a St Thomas guest house.
Head of the St Thomas police, Superintendent Beau Rigabe said Perry 27, the reputed leader of the 'Duppy Flames' gang and two other men were at the Alshamar Guest House in Port Morant, St Thomas, when Perry engaged cops in a shoot out around 10:40 am and was killed.

The two men, whose identities are being withheld, were taken into custody and an AK-47 rifle and two pistols were recovered from the scene.
Perry was wanted in connection with the 2015 murders of Corporal Kenneth Davis, who was assigned to the Protective Services Division, and Constable Craig Palmer, who was assigned to the Kingston Western Division, as well as several other crimes.
Last year, during one of several police-military operations to nab him in Harbour View, St Andrew, one of his cronies was killed and two illegal guns, including an Uzi sub-machine gun, were seized.
But Perry and two other gang members pulled off a spectacular escape, eluding some 100 members of the constabulary force and 90 members of the army, by crawling their way to freedom in a riverbed north of the community. more

Gatorade pays US$300k for misrepresenting water benefits in Bolt game

Friday, September 22, 2017

Gatorade
SACRAMENTO, California (AP) — Gatorade has agreed not to make disparaging comments about water as part of a US$300,000 settlement reached Thursday with California over allegations it misleadingly portrayed water's benefits in a cellphone game where users refuel Olympic runner Usain Bolt.

The game, downloaded 30,000 times in California and 2.3 million times worldwide, is no longer available.

The dispute between the sports-drink company and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra was settled in less than a day after Becerra filed a complaint in Los Angeles County.

Becerra's complaint alleges the game, called Bolt!, misleadingly portrayed the health benefits of water in a way that could harm children's nutritional choices. The game encouraged users to "keep your performance level high and avoid water," with Bolt's fuel level going down after drinking water but up after drinking Gatorade, the complaint alleged.

The settlement should serve as a warning to companies that falsely advertise, Becerra said.

"Making misleading statements is a violation of California law. But making misleading statements aimed at our children is beyond unlawful, it's morally wrong and a betrayal of trust," he said in a statement.

Gatorade agreed to the settlement but has not admitted wrongdoing.
Usain Bolt

"The mobile game, Bolt!, was designed to highlight the unique role and benefits of sports drinks in supporting athletic performance. We recognise the role water plays in overall health and wellness, and offer our consumers great options," spokeswoman Katie Vidaillet said in an email.

In addition to agreeing not to disparage water, Gatorade agreed not to make Bolt! or any other games that give the impression that water will hinder athletic performance or that athletes only consume Gatorade and do not drink water. Gatorade also agreed to use "reasonable efforts" to abide by parent company PepsiCo's policy on responsible advertising to children and to disclose its contracts with endorsers.

Of the settlement money, US$120,000 will go toward the study or promotion of childhood and teenager nutrition and the consumption of water.

The game was available in 2012 and 2013 and for a limited time in 2017.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said late Thursday in New York that the country may consider a nuclear test of “unprecedented scale” in the Pacific Ocean, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.
Those comments came shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he was considering the “highest level of hard-line countermeasure” in response to President Donald Trump’s warning that the U.S. would annihilate North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies.

DEATH & RUIN : US$16m pledged to hurricane-ravaged Caribbean islands

 Sunday, September 10, 2017

Pledges of assistance have come in for countries across the region that were last week ravaged by Hurricane Irma.
The CCRIF, formerly the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility; Scotiabank; the United Nations Development Programme; and the University of the West Indies have, in total, committed over US$16.4 million in relief efforts.
The CCRIF announced that it would pay out $US15.6 million (EC$42 million) to the governments of Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, and St Kitts & Nevis.
The CCRIF said the passage of the category five hurricane triggered the payments on the countries' Tropical Cyclone polices. The monies will be distributed accordingly to Antigua & Barbuda US$6,794,875; Anguilla US$ 6,529,100; St Kitts & Nevis US$ 2,294,603.
“CCRIF is verifying the payout calculations and is in discussion with the three governments about making arrangements for transfer of these payouts, which will be completed within 14 days after the event — as mandated by CCRIF's operational guidelines,” the organisation stated.
The CCRIF noted that it is accessing whether the Excess Rainfall (XSR) policies held by Anguilla and St Kitts and Nevis were also triggered by the rains from Hurricane Irma. This may result in a second payment to those countries under the policies. The assessment under the XSR policies will be determined in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Scotiabank has announced that it will donate US$500,000 to charitable organisations assisting with the rescue and relief efforts in the affected countries. more

1. Donate or volunteer

Multiple organizations are appealing for donations so they can send volunteers and supplies to the disaster areas.

GATOR PARK PREPS 2,000 ALLIGATORS FOR IRMA Orlando Gator Park Promises None Will Escape During Hurricane

“This isn’t our first rodeo,” park director Mike Hileman told HuffPost on Saturday as his employees prepared to close the 110-acre theme park, located roughly 13 miles outside of Walt Disney World.
“We have a detailed hurricane procedure in place,” he assured. “We have double fences, a large perimeter fence that goes around the entire property.”
The assurance came just weeks after Hurricane Harvey struck southeastern Texas, with its powerful floodwaters threatening the release of hundreds of gators from Gator Country, an animal sanctuary in Beaumont. There, water nearly flooded over fences surrounding their reptiles, threatening their enclosure. At Gatorland, where the largest gators are 14-feet long, Hileman insisted that even if one of their eight-feet-tall fences gets destroyed or blown away, “they are still not getting off of this property.”
That’s even with most of the gators preparing to ride out the storm in their outside pools. Many of the park’s other residents ― including panthers, bobcats, goats, birds, raccoons and snakes ― had to be moved inside, he said.

Donald Trump Is Making Someone Else Face The Cameras To Announce DACA’s Fate Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a vocal opponent of the Obama-era program, will do the job instead on Tuesday. And he won’t be taking questions.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will hold a news briefing Tuesday morning at the Department of Justice to discuss the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an Obama-era executive action that protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation. Trump is reportedly planning to shutter the program after a six-month delay.
President Donald Trump, an obsessive television viewer and master of the medium, is not scheduled to face the cameras. In fact, the only public event on the president’s schedule on Tuesday is a photo op before a meeting with GOP congressional leaders on tax reform.
“Big week coming up!” Trump said in a Twitter post on Monday evening.
Many unanswered questions remain about the administration’s plans for the program, such as whether any of the approximately 800,000 current DACA recipients can continue renewing their permits, or whether young undocumented immigrants can still apply for a permit within the next six months.

TRUMP’S NORTH KOREA THREAT HAS ‘APOCALYPTIC’ CONSEQUENCES... Trump’s Latest Threat Over North Korea Could Have Dire Ramifications

President Donald Trump’s threat to cut off trade with any country that does business with North Korea would have massive consequences on the global economic stage if executed, experts said.
Trump’s threat came after continued aggression from North Korea, which recently conducted its most powerful nuclear test.
If the president followed through on his threat, it would would mean ending trade with China, the United States’ largest trade partner. According to 2015 data from the Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis, the value of trade in goods and services between the U.S. and China is about $663 billion.
China accounts for the vast majority of North Korean exports and imports. But other countries that do business with North Korea include India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Thailand, the Philippines and Russia, according to data from MIT’s Observatory of Economic Complexity.
Taylor Griffin, a former Treasury spokesman and White House staffer for President George W. Bush, told NBC News the economic impact of Trump’s threat would be “apocalyptic.”
Ron Elving, a senior editor and correspondent on NPR’s Washington desk, said cutting off trade would be “an economic tsunami beyond description.”
Geng Shuang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said Monday Trump’s comments were “unfair.”
“What is definitely unacceptable to us is that on the one hand we work so hard to peacefully resolve this issue and on the other hand our interests are subject to sanctions and jeopardized,” Shuang said, according to ABC News. “This is unfair.”
Trump has repeatedly taunted China over North Korea and accused them of refusing to help isolate the country despite its repeated nuclear aggression.

Hurricane Irma strengthens to Category 5; Florida and Puerto Rico prepare...May pass Jamaica on the North Side.

(CNN)Hurricane Irma strengthened to a Category 4 storm Monday, churning west in the Atlantic Ocean and prompting emergency declarations in Florida and Puerto Rico.
Although Irma's path remains uncertain, the possibility it could threaten the United States led Florida Gov. Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency in all 67 counties in his state."In Florida, we always prepare for the worst and hope for the best, and while the exact path of Irma is not absolutely known at this time, we cannot afford to not be prepared," Scott said in a statement released late Monday afternoon. "This state of emergency allows our emergency management officials to act swiftly in the best interest of Floridians without the burden of bureaucracy or red tape."
Scott said on Twitter he spoke to President Donald Trump Monday night. He said Trump "offered the full resources of the federal government as Floridians prepare for Hurricane Irma."
The governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, declared a state of emergency Monday and activated the National Guard. Hours later, the National Hurricane Center issued an hurricane warning for Puerto Rico.
Classes will not be held on Tuesday in the public education system nor in the University of Puerto Rico, according to a release from the governor's office. Rosselló warned the public on Sunday that the island could feel Irma's wrath around noon Wednesday.
As of 11 p.m. ET, Monday, Irma was about 410 miles (660 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands, the National Hurricane Center said. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph) as it heads west at 13 mph (20 kph). Landfall is expected early Wednesday on the island of Anguilla.
Computer models show the system moving through the Caribbean, and by the end of week, it will turn right toward the north, said CNN meteorologist and weather anchor Tom Sater.

Thriller U's dad missing... Thriller U is offering a $500,000 reward

BY RICHARD JOHNSON Observer senior reporter  Tuesday, September 05, 2017

Thriller U is offering a $500,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the safe return of his father, Thadious Jamieson.
Speaking with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, Thriller U said his father has been missing since Saturday afternoon.
“He was last spotted in the Greendale area of Spanish Town driving his white Toyota Corolla car with the licence plate number 1287 GV. We are offering this reward for information that can lead to his safe return. We won't pay out otherwise. People with information can call me on 345-2110,” said the reggae singer.
The Spanish Town Police confirmed a report was made.
Thriller U said his 73-year-old father is in good health, having beaten prostate cancer a few years ago. His only major ailment at this time is that he does not see well at nights.
When last seen Jamieson, affectionately called Mr Teddy, was wearing a black and white polo shirt, dark pants, a beige and white striped cap and brown sneakers.
His family has been utilising social media to spread the word, noting: “He has never stayed away from home this long. He's alert, soft-spoken, and very helpful. If you have any information, please call the nearest police station.” Eight years ago, Thriller U and his family was thrust into the spotlight when his 15-year-old daughter, Nekitta, was murdered in Florida and his wife shot and injured in the incident.
Both were vacationing in the United States when a gunman broke into the home of the friend with whom they were staying. The police responded and when they arrived at the home at 9581 Encino Street, they found a woman lying in front of the house and three people dead inside the residence. Faith Bisasor and her 15-year-old son, Davion Bishop, as well as Nekitta were found dead.
Thriller U — a member of the quartet LUST as well as a solo act — is known for songs including Young and She Green, Ain't No Way To Say I'm Sorry, I'll Never Love This Way Again and I'll Prove it to You.

IN CLARENDON, JAMAICA: 'Gunshots Every Day' Effortville Primary students lament violence, believe police can't protect them

CHILDREN at Effortville Primary School in Clarendon are accustomed to the sound of gunshots. They know when to run and they know where to run to.
In fact, so common is the violence around them that they have had enough.
“A pure violence a gwaan inna di ghetto; a pure gunshot every day,” a student, who appeared to be no more than 10 years old, blurted out in yesterday's morning devotion.
In unison, his schoolmates shouted “Yes!” But more alarming was the confession of the majority that the police could not protect them.

Security Branch addressing students at Effortville Primary in
Clarendon yesterday, the first day of the new school year.

While constables assigned to the Community Safety and Security branch at May Pen Police Station assured them that everything would be okay, an eight-year-old boy wept in a nearby room.
    He didn't want to die.
The child's mother, Ruthlyn Brown, told the Jamaica Observer that her son had seen the evening news which reported the murders of six-year-old Timothy Bassaragh and 13-year-old Shaniel Bartley. This was in addition to the numerous reports of murder and shooting incidents in the parish. “From we came in this morning he was crying, saying he doesn't want to be here because of the violence; that he didn't want to die. Sometimes we hear the gunshot from here because of the borderline and he listens to the news when they are discussing it,” the woman shared.
She said, however, that moving her child from the school is not an option because of its “excellent” curriculum and teaching style.
“I'll have to have a talk with him because I'm not moving him from here. I'll have to get the guidance counsellor to talk to him because he has a good relationship with her,” she said.
The school's principal Adrian Sinclair, told the Observer that staff had to deal with several parents and students who have been victims of violence in recent times.
“We have one of our grade six students who was shot and injured by gunmen. He was in hospital for an extended time. Before that, he lost his mother, although not to violence. His stepfather was also shot, so for him to undergo so much at one time, it's horrible,” Sinclair said.
He mentioned also that parents have had to move out of the community, causing enrolment at the school to become fickle. It was also dependent, he said, on how alarming the violence gets in the area. more
