“Tuff Gong's team heard some of the work and then we started discussing giving some of their catalogue a similar treatment. This would essentially bridge the gap between the EDM world and the Jamaica music world,” he said.
“It's one of Bob Marley's biggest and best tracks and his daughter reworking it would provide a story for the whole world to love,” he continued.
According to Bankay, they are hoping that the remake which he describes as a tropical house/pop beat with elements of dancehall and the original reggae vocals will breathe new life into the classic, while exposing Bob Marley's music to a new audience and generation.
Reflecting on his time spent working with Cedella Marley, Bankay describes Marley, a former Melody Maker member, as a consummate professional. He stated that she required perfection and was extremely advanced as it relates to the business aspect of the arts. “This project took about a year to finish and we did about six versions till we got it just right,” said Bankay.
Could You Be loved, the remake, is scheduled to be released today.
The orginal version of the song is taken from Bob Marley's final studio album, Uprising, in 1980. It is also included on Bob Marley & The Wailers greatest hits album Legend. It was written in 1979 on an airplane while The Wailers were experimenting on guitar. Could You be Loved is also the soundtrack in several movies including How Stella got her Groove Back50 first dates, and I Love Youto Death.
Marley died in May 1981. He was 36.
