Amidst the chills of the winter season in the United States were rays of sunshine as Jamaica’s Junior Development Gymnastics team were on fire at the United Winterfest Championships in Maryland over the weekend.

The Jamaican team, competing at the three-day championships for the first time, produced a number of creditable all-around performances, chief among them was Danielle James’ top-class performance in level eight.
The efforts of the 16- member team left president of the Jamaica Amateur Gymnastics Association (JAGA) Nicole Grant beaming with pride.
Grant, who was on hand to witness the spectacle, pointed out that the competition provided the opportunity for gymnasts to get up close and personal and learn a thing or two from the judges after the meet. “These judges are world-class and Olympic judges who actually choreograph these compulsory routines, so immediately they can tell when something is not being executed correctly.
“But all in all, the girls did really well… they worked very hard and put out the effort and energy because they really wanted to do well for Jamaica. When they went on the podium you could see it in their eyes how happy and proud they were and we are all so proud of their achievements,” Grant told the Jamaica Observer from Maryland.
While Grant believes the impressive levels of skill displayed by the girls on their first outing will be a major boost for both the junior and senior teams for the year ahead, she reiterated the plea for adequate funding to assist in developing a proper facility.
“The expectation for this meet was for them to gain experience and learn from other competitors. However, they surpassed our expectations and that is definitely a boost for the sport as it gives even more motivation to ensure they have the proper facility to help them develop. more
