KINGSTON, Jamaica — Comrades have filed out of the People's National Party (PNP) headquarters in droves, painfully aware that the curtains have been brought down on their party in today's local government election.

Preliminary reports are that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has snatched nine of the 13 councils, which have been controlled by the PNP since 2012.
This is the second rattling defeat for the party in nine months, having also lost the hard-fought general election in February to the JLP.
Outgoing General Secretary Paul Burke told the few supporters who stayed behind that the results were not unexpected. He noted that the party had campaigned with very little funding and that the comrades had done their best.
