The feared crimefighter told the Jamaica Observer yesterday that his aim is to expand on the community policing initiative successfully implemented by his Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor, and to give hope to the youths in the area.
"I'm focusing on hope. If they have hope their behaviour will reflect it," said Ford in relation to young people of the division, said to be one of the toughest in the country.
"If you can give them something to keep their energy level high that will keep them away from the guns and develop positive thinking. It can make a difference and make the division a model division," added Ford.
The Jamaica Observer broke news last week that Ford was tipped to head the division, in which a number of tough communities, including Tivoli Gardens, Denham Town, Hanna Town and Trench Town, are located.
Senior Superintendent Michael Smith was earlier this month assigned to temporarily lead the division, following the transfer of Senior Superintendent McGregor to the St James Police Division in early April. McGregor's transfer triggered several protests in the area.
McGregor had overseen a decline in murders and other crimes in the division in the wake of the 2010 operation to apprehend then Tivoli Garden's strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. His tenor has been marked by celebrated community policing style that brought peace to the division, once noted for violent gang activities, extortion and a lack of support for the police.
Yesterday, Ford said he wants to establish a youth clubs across the division, in an effort to develop a 'model division', "where people want to work and live and do business". more
