A policeman who is charged with the murder of taxi driver Delroy Frame has been sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment for soliciting and accepting money from Frame.
Constable Jeffrey Peart, who was attached to Negril Police Station in Westmoreland, was captured on video collecting $20,000 from Frame in Negril in April 2012.
Peart was charged with breaching the Corruption Prevention Act.
Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes found him guilty of soliciting $30,000 from Frame and accepting $20,000 from him. He was sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Murdered shortly after
Frame was allegedly murdered shortly after he reported the matter to the police.
The Crown, represented by Stephen Smith, clerk of the courts, relied on the Evidence Act to have Frame's statements to the police tendered into evidence.
Frame's headless body was found in St Ann about one month after he alerted the Anti-Corruption Branch. A sting operation was conducted which captured video and audio footage of Peart collecting $20,000 from Frame in Negril in April 2012. The video also showed the police taking the marked notes from Peart's hands.
Forensic analyst Sherron Brydson and forensic scientist Yannick Simpson testified of DNA tests conducted to prove the identity of the body. They said they conducted tests on the blood and other samples taken from the headless body and swabs from Frame's elderly parents. The findings were that the body was that of the male child of the couple. more
