Former First Lady Nancy Reagan Dies At 94

Former first lady Nancy Reagan died Sunday at the age of 94.
The news was first reported by the website TMZ, citing a "close family member," and confirmed by a spokeswoman. The Reagan Library said in a statement that the cause of death was "congestive heart failure." The widow of former President Ronald Reagan had been hospitalized in October 2014 with a fractured pelvis.
She served as first lady from 1981 to 1989 and was known for her work in combating youth drug abuse through the "Just Say No" campaign.

She was born Anne Frances Robbins on July 6, 1921, in New York City. When her stepfather adopted her in 1935, she took his last name of Davis. She majored in theater at Smith College in Massachusetts.
In 1951, she met her future husband when he was president of the Screen Actors Guild and she was a Hollywood actress billed as Nancy Davis. They married in Los Angeles in 1952 and had a daughter, Patti Davis, and a son, Ron Reagan.
"My life really began when I married my husband," Nancy Reagan often said. She even referenced the quote in her 1989 book My Turn.
After the wedding, Nancy Reagan appeared in only a few more films, including "Hellcats of the Navy" (1957), which also featured her husband.
"Ronnie," as she affectionately called him, served as governor of California from 1967 to 1975. During that time, Nancy Reagan supported veterans groups and advocated for the Foster Grandparent Program, which brings together older Americans with children who have physical and emotional handicaps. She drew national attention to the program once her husband was elected to the White House.

JORDAN FOOTE loses battle with cancer Holy Trinity’s 18-year-old football star.....As the aggressive cancer gained momentum, it claimed an invaluable prize when Foote’s left leg was amputated

BY SEAN A WILLIAMS Deputy sports editor Williamss@jamaicaobserver.com  Sunday, March 06, 2016
A pall of gloom hovered over Holy Trinity High School and the wider Inter-Secondary schools’ Sports Association (ISSA) family yesterday with the heartbreaking news that one of their own had died, cut off in the tender flower of youth.

 Jordan Foote
Schoolteachers, students, members of the football fraternity, friends, and relatives of Jordan ‘Reddo’ Foote were plunged into mourning when the teenaged footballer lost his battle with cancer at the University Hospital of the West Indies in St Andrew yesterday morning.
Foote, 18, was diagnosed with the dreaded disease, which started in his left knee prior to the start of the schoolboy season last year, and consequently spread “to all parts of his body”.
As the aggressive cancer gained momentum, it claimed an invaluable prize when Foote’s left leg was amputated consequent to related complications in December of 2015, delivering a crushing end to a football career in bloom. In 2014, the lad from Dunkirk, a tough Kingston inner-city community, was on top of his game. His school team, Holy Trinity, enjoyed one of its most glorious seasons in schoolboy football.
In addition to being competitive in the Manning Cup and advancing to the knockout stages, the school — located at 18 George Headley Drive in Kingston next door to the iconic Sabina Park — also romped to the final of the then Lime Super Cup.
Holy Trinity eventually lost to Jamaica College.
The school’s success was largely attributed to the skill, leadership and heart of Jordan Foote.
But at the height of the school’s and Foote’s unprecedented success in football, mother fate delivered a mighty blow.
The crafty midfielder, who picked up an injury while playing in the pre-season STETHS Cup in St Elizabeth last year, later received the news no one wants to hear, when he was diagnosed with bone cancer.
But as Foote bravely fought to kick the parasitic disease from his body, he was not alone. He enjoyed unshakeable support from a circle of friends and family members, some of whom stayed with him to the very end.
One of them was his football coach, mentor and “father”, Devon Anderson.
“Words can’t express how I am feeling right now. I have not only lost a player or a student, I have lost a son. I was like the father he never had,” a deeply emotional Anderson told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. more

Zimbabwe govt to take over all diamond mines: Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has announced that the government will take over all the country's diamond mines to stop foreign firms from syphoning off gems without declaring them.

 Friday, March 04, 2016 | 9:06 AM
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AFP) — Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has announced that the government will take over all the country's diamond mines to stop foreign firms from syphoning off gems without declaring them.
"We have not received much (money) from the diamond industry at all," Mugabe said in a two-hour interview screened late Thursday by state broadcaster Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe
"Our people... have not been able to see or hear what was going on and lots of swindling, smuggling have taken place and the companies that have been mining virtually robbed us of our wealth.
"We have decided that this area should be a monopoly area and only the state should be able to do mining." Mines Minister Walter Chidhakwa last month announced the government had seized diamond mines in the eastern Chiadzwa district after their licences expired.
Zimbabwe last year ordered diamond mines, including joint ventures with Chinese companies mining in the Marange district, to join a government conglomerate.
The country's diamond industry has been tainted by allegations of rights abuses including the killing and torture of workers.
Reports of abuse led to an international ban of gem exports from Marange between 2009 and 2011.
Diamonds were discovered in Marange in 2006, drawing thousands of small-time miners hoping to make a quick fortune.
The army cleared the area in late 2008, when rights groups said more than 200 people were killed.
The government in Harare pinned its hopes on the diamond industry to shore up the moribund economy, but with little success.
Zimbabwe, which earns most of its foreign exchange through mining, saw diamond production fall to 420,000 carats in the first five months of 2015 from 660,000 carats a year earlier, according to Bloomberg News.

“I echo Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson in commending the Jamaican people for their dedication to democracy as demonstrated in the free, fair, and calm general election on February 25th,” Moreno said in a statement issued just after the swearing-in of the new prime minister at King’s House, the official residence of the governor general.
“The United States and Jamaica share responsibility for enhancing citizen security in both our countries and I want to stress our commitment to enabling broad-based economic prosperity through growth in the bilateral trade relationship and US direct investment in Jamaica.

COCK FIGHT : NATIONAL INSECURITY: Trump Turns Debate Into Penis-Measuring Contest...WEAK: Cruz, Kasich, Rubio All Say They Will Support Trump If He's The Nominee... Trump Exposed – But Will It Matter?... 'A Spectacle Unlike Any Other In Modern History'... 'A National Embarrassment'...

Donald Trump defended himself Thursday against attacks on the size of … his hands.
As the Republican presidential debate got underway in Detroit, Trump took the opportunity to rebut something that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio had teased him about earlier in the week.
Marco Rubio and Donald Trump at Republican Debate
He held up his hands to the audience. "Look at those hands. Are they small hands? "He referred to my hands, 'if they're small, something else must be small.' I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee."
In spite of the total absurdity of the interaction, the strangest thing about Trump's defense of his hands was his feigned surprise. "He hit my hands," Trump said. "Nobody has ever hit my hands, I've never heard of this. What?"
In reality, the joke about Trump's hands started more than 25 years, when Graydon Carter began referring to Trump in the pages of the satirical Spy magazine as a "short-fingered vulgarian.'
In November, Carter wrote in Vanity Fair that, "to this day, I receive the occasional envelope from Trump. There is always a photo of him -- generally a tear sheet from a magazine. On all of them he has circled his hand in gold Sharpie in a valiant effort to highlight the length of his fingers."
On Tuesday, Trump defended his hands at a rally in Ohio. more

ANDREW's DAY : Holness to be sworn in as prime minister of JAMAICA today at 4:00pm.....From humble beginnings during his childhood days in Spanish Town, St Catherine, to the upper St Andrew-located Jamaica House

BY KIMONE FRANCIS Observer staff reporter francisk@jamaicaobserver.com  Thursday, March 03, 2016
FROM humble beginnings during his childhood days in Spanish Town, St Catherine, to the upper St Andrew-located Jamaica House, Andrew Michael Holness, having secured his own mandate in last Thursday’s general election, will today, for the second time, be sworn in as Jamaica’s prime minister. The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader had previously served at the helm of the country for just over two months — from October 23, 2011 to January 5, 2012.
HOLNESS… previously served at the helm of the country for
 just over two months
Holness, in continuation of a tempestuous political career, will take the oath of office in a special ceremony at King’s House scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm, after which he will receive the Instrument of Appointment to the Office of Prime Minister from Governor General Sir Patrick Allen. He will then deliver his inaugural address.
It was the political leanings of his mother, Carol Harvey Richards, and the mentoring of former Prime Minister Edward Seaga which led him to this particular point in his life, having been taught to “study hard, work hard, don’t beg, and to be disciplined. That is the core principle and philosophy of a Labourite,” Holness would later tell a crowd of supporters in Manchester in late 2015.
But his arduous journey to the country’s highest political office took several spins, including a divisive leadership challenge, a contentious battle with two senators; which ended with the country’s highest court ruling against him; and threats by senior party members to remove him as party leader.
For political analyst Troy Caine, Holness has matured and is now better prepared for his position as a leader.
“His meteoric rise is not so meteoric anymore because Mr Holness is not one you would call a newcomer to politics, having been in the elected Parliament of the Lower House since 1997 — 18 years ago. His journey to where he now is has been a bit rough,” Caine pointed out to the Jamaica Observer during a telephone interview yesterday.
Holness’ entrance into representational politics almost never happened, as he was not sworn in as Member of Parliament for the St Andrew West Central constituency until months after he had been elected in the December 18, 1997 General Election. He had to fight off a brisk challenge from Dr Warren Blake of the People’s National Party (PNP) after the preliminary and final results were challenged, and the seat was only finalised after a magisterial recount. A decade later he was appointed minister of education when the JLP won the September 3, 2007 General Election.more

Accused Fake 'Teen Doctor' Malachi Love-Robinson Arrested Again.... The 18-year-old is accused of defrauding an 86-year-old woman out of almost $35,000 who he "treated" for stomach pain.

03/03/2016 05:08 am ET
Malachi Love-Robinson, the 18-year-old detained last month for allegedly impersonating a doctor, has been arrested again -- this time on charges that he defrauded an elderly woman out of almost $35,000 after “treating” her for stomach pain.

According to ABC News, Love-Robinson turned himself in to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office late Tuesday night. He faces one count of larceny and five counts of using another person's identification without consent. Anita Morrison, 86, who found Love-Robinson through an online search, claims he cashed several checks stolen from her home during visits to treat her for “severe” stomach pain.
An arrest report said the Doogie Howser-wannabe “criminally used” Morrison’s checking account to make $34,504 in car and credit card payments, per the Sun-Sentinel.
Morrison said she was fooled into believing that the young man was a doctor who could help her.

at the Palm Beach County Court Criminal Justice Complex
in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“Maybe I wanted to believe because I was in such pain,” the octogenarian told the newspaper last month. “I just went along with it.”
This is Love-Robinson’s second brush with the law in less than a month. In mid-February, he was arrested for allegedly operating a fake medical practice in West Palm Beach after an undercover agent reportedly visited the New Birth New Life Medical Center and Urgent Care and was given a physical exam and medical advice by Love-Robinson.
Love-Robinson's grandfather, William Robinson, told the Sun-Sentinel at the time that the arrest was the result of a misunderstanding. He claimed his grandson, who officials said referred to himself as “Dr. Love,” was certified to practice holistic medicine by online schools, and that he hadn’t actually been seeing patients himself.
Love-Robinson, however, has been accused of masquerading as a doctor before.
According to the Palm Beach Post, when Love-Robinson was 17, he was allegedly caught “roaming the halls” dressed as a doctor at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Authorities did not believe he saw any patients or performed treatments so he was not charged. more

J$100 MILLION BOYS & GIRLS CHAMPS: Champs an investment in nation-building, says Wehby....Grace sponsorship in mega school athletics festival totals nearly $100 million

Thursday, March 03, 2016
Don Wehby, group CEO at GraceKennedy Limited, might have presented a symbolic cheque valuing $54 million to Dr Walton Small, president of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), at yesterday’s press launch of the 106th edition of the Boys’ and Girls’ Athletc Championships as its sponsorship share as title sponsors.

Group CEO Don Wehby are all smiles as they share the burden of holding
up the symbolic sponsorship cheque for $54 million at the press launch
of ‘Champs’ 2016 at the Spanish Court’s Valencia Suite in Kingston yesterday.
But Wehby, a former St George’s College star athlete at the prestigious event, had earlier announced that his company’s overall sponsorship to the event had totalled approximately $100 million. “Yes, it’s a lot of money. But we don’t see it as an expense, it’s an investment in nation-building,” he said.
Wehby had noted that his company had been heavily involved in the lead-up to ‘Champs’ through the development meets, where Grace had been sharing tips with the athletes about proper nutrition as they prepare to go for gold and chase their dreams.
The group CEO advised that Grace Foods’ #ChaseYourDreams promotion had set up a Dream Fund, where they partner with the public to raise $5 million for three schools — one from each county — to share, to purchase equipment for their schools to enable them to better compete. The public’s support would come through the purchase of Grace products. “You can’t put a price on dreams. And we dare everyone, especially our young people, to dream big!” noted Wehby, who revealed that this year many of Grace’s subsidiaries are getting involved in the company’s ‘Champs’ activation.
“Our GraceKennedy Foundation is staying true to its mandate to help keep Jamaica clean and encourage recycling. You’ll see lots of blue recepticles around the stadium for you to place your plastic bottles.
“For our friends outside of Jamaica, Western Union will, for the third year, be giving customers outside Jamaica the chance to win a trip here to ‘See Champs Live!’
“Our bank, First Global (FGB), is expanding its involvement in this exciting event as well. FGB will have its mobile app portal which will share historical ‘Champs’ data, videos and stats. Plus, FGB will be launching its High School Affinity Card, which will allow FGB cardholders to choose to use their reward points to support their schools through their alumni associations.”
Wehby said that last year the GraceKennedy Group announced the signing of a landmark deal with ISSA that allows a joint venture company called Greenfield Media to manage the media rights to all of ISSA’s sporting events. more

JLP WINS : JAMAICA's Governor General to get list of election winners today, March 1st....Projected that the JLP have an unassailable 32-31 lead in the election results. Prime Minister-designate Andrew Holness, swearing in is now likely to be held on Thursday at King’s House.

BY BALFORD HENRY Senior staff reporter balfordh@jamaicaobserver.com  Tuesday, March 01, 2016
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) is expected to send the names of winning candidates in last Thursday’s general election to Governor General Sir Patrick Allen today.
Director of Elections Orrette Fisher addressing a news
conference at the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ)
head office yesterday morning. Beside him is ECJ Chair
 Dorothy Pine-McLarty.
However, while the list will include the People’s National Party’s (PNP’s) Dr Winston Green, who was declared the winner in St Mary South Eastern late Saturday night, he will still have to await the outcome of a magisterial recount sought by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate, Dr Norman Dunn, which is expected to start tomorrow.
The
Jamaica Observer has been told that with yesterday’s final count for St Thomas Western concluded last night, Director of Elections Orrette Fisher – having decided that this would give the JLP an unassailable 32-31 lead in the election results – will send the full list of winners to Sir Patrick in order to speed up the process of the swearing in of Prime Minister-designate Andrew Holness, which is now likely to be held on Thursday at King’s House. “The jury is still out as to whether this is the way to go, but I have decided to send it once the returning officers have made their decisions,” Fisher said yesterday.
The ECJ/EOJ has seven days to make the declaration of the seats and send the list to the governor general, who will then proceed with the swearing in.
The only other outstanding issue at the moment is the outcome of the magisterial recount.
The
Observer was informed that the writ was filed yesterday by attorneys for Dr Dunn – George Soutar and Alexander Williams – and that the court will start hearing the case tomorrow.
Dunn’s attorneys will be focusing on the fact that approximately 74 votes, mostly for him, were rejected by the returning officer during the final count, after being accepted by the presiding officers at the preliminary count.
Williams said that, following the application, they are now awaiting requirements for the next steps, including the preparation of the summons.
He said that Dunn’s team feels that a number of votes were improperly rejected, while a number of votes cast for Green were improperly accepted. more

DONALD CHUMP! Black Students Removed From Trump Rally In Georgia The Valdosta State University students said they had no intention of disrupting Trump.

 02/29/2016 09:48 pm ET
Dozens of black college students in Georgia said they were asked to leave a Donald Trump rally on their campus Monday for standing silently on gymnasium bleachers before the business magnate began speaking.
Black Students at Valdosta State University in Georgia
Valdosta State University students said Secret Service agents were told by Trump to remove them, according to Jennifer Jacobs, a Des Moines Register reporter who was at the event. Representatives for Trump and the Secret Service didn't immediately respond to inquiries. "I think we got kicked out because we're a group of black people," a tearful student said in a video posted by USA Today. "I guess ... they're afraid we're going to say something or do something. But we just really wanted to watch the rally. To get kicked out because we're a group of black people ... shows you how racist our own school is."
Another student said the group decided to stand quietly in the bleachers wearing black attire to as a statement. The group had no intention to disrupt the candidate, the student said.
The incident happened the same day Black Lives Matter protestors interrupted a Trump speech during a campaign stop in Virginia. At that rally, a Time magazine photographer was thrown to the ground in a chokehold by a Secret Service agent after stepping outside of the press pool.
Trump has drawn widespread condemnation in recent days after being slow to distance himself from white supremacists supporting him, namely KKK leader David Duke. A video tweeted by a Valdosta student appears to show Snapchat footage of the group as they were ejected. more
