WASHINGTON -- Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Monday he's confident his bill to restrict President Barack Obama's ability to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran can survive a threatened presidential veto.

"Look, I don’t ever want to overcommit and under-deliver,” Corker told reporters Monday evening. “We are moving in a very positive direction, and we’ve worked through some issues that I think have given me a lot of hope. ... I think that this weekend has been very productive.”

Corker's bill, scheduled for markup in the Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday afternoon, would grant Congress the final vote on any nuclear agreement the U.S. and its five negotiating partners reach with Iran. Congress would have two months to review the deal, and du“It’s really a resolution of disapproval,” Corker said of the nuclear talks, which face a June 30 deadline.

The bill is roughly three votes short of the 67 needed to override a veto. However, members of the committee have filed at least 52 amendments to the legislative text, meaning that the results of the markup may drastically alter the vote count in either direction.

From her Jamaican Christmas cake cheesecake to her smooth spiced pumpkin cheesecake, Dr Ennis has definitely managed to find a niche when it comes to her offerings.

Growing up, she could never pinpoint what it was that she actually wanted to be.

“First I wanted to be a I lawyer then I changed my mind to veterinarian and then changed again to physician. I actually never really thought about becoming a chef,” she laughed. Her passion for the culinary arts is understandable, though, especially since her entire family loves to cook.

“I grew up in a very health-oriented family; my mom used to make our baby food from scratch, my dad used to bake bread and grandma was always showing me how to cook something. So definitely if I look back in my life, cooking was always there. “My experience in Cuba I would say exposed me to a different world from the one I was used to. It gave me an appreciation for the differences in people around me. Many women over 50 are reveling in the joys of having an empty nest. Not Annegret Raunigk. The 65-year-old mother of 13 had been trying to get pregnant by artificial insemination for around a year-and-a-half when her attempts finally saw success.

Germany's Bild newspaper reports that Raunigk is now 21 weeks into her pregnancy... with quadruplets.

Though pregnancy over age 35 is considered to be higher risk, according to the Mayo Clinic, Raunigk gave birth at age 55 to her now youngest daughter. In fact, it was reportedly at her youngest daughter's urging for a little brother or sister that the grandmother of seven decided to try for a pregnancy again.

Germany's RTL reports that the expectant mother is experiencing a normal pregnancy, though any pregnancy involving quadruplets naturally can be more challenging.

Some medical professionals are criticizing her decision to get pregnant, however. "Any pregnancy of a woman over age 45 has to be considered a high-risk pregnancy; over 60 this is naturally extreme," Dr. Holger Stepan, head of obstetrics at the University of Leipzig said, according to The Associated Press.

"The 65-year-old body is definitely not designed to carry a pregnancy, not of one child and certainly not of quadruplets," Stepan said.

But after so many pregnancies, it seems the mother-to-be is defiant. "How does one have to be at 65? One must apparently always fit some cliches which I find rather tiring. I think, one must decide that for oneself," she told RTL. more

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Police High Command late Monday issued a statement confirming that a Jamaican teen who was denied entry into Suriname and returned to the island on Saturday, April 11, is in custody.

Media reports are that the 16-year-old boy was refused passage through Suriname on Saturday, after immigration officers suspected that he was travelling to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) through Turkey.

Detectives from the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Branch (C-TOC), along with other law enforcement agencies, have been tasked to pursue several lines of investigation in relation to the incident, a release from the Corporate Communications Unit said.

“It would be premature to issue any detailed statement on this issue at this time,” head of C-TOC Assistant Commissioner of Police Devon Watkis said, explaining that the investigation is at a delicate stage.

Top Jamaican High schools Calabar High and Wolmer's Boys' were dealt massive blows yesterday after Michael O'Hara and Jaheel Hyde were ruled ineligible to compete in the high school section of the Penn Relays Carnival set to be staged at Franklin Field, Pennsylvania, April 23-25.

Both athletes, who signed endorsement contracts for rival telecommunications companies Digicel and LIME, were expected to play crucial roles in their high school teams that will take part at the relay carnival next weekend.

A release from the local high school sports umbrella agency, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) yesterday said the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PIAA), the state High School governing body which sanctions the Penn Relays High Schools events, had ruled both athletes ineligible after getting benefits "not available to all the students in their schools".

The release from ISSA said, "In a communiqué to ISSA, the PIAA said both athletes are deemed to have received benefits related to their athletic skills and performances which are not available to all students at their high schools. On this basis both athletes cannot represent their respective schools at the 2015 Penn Relays."

Hyde, who is the defending champion for the high school boys 400m hurdles and who was down to run on Wolmer's Boys' 4x100m team, is a brand ambassador for LIME, while O'Hara, who attends Calabar High had signed with Digicel.

Additionally, another company had announced this year that they had given O'Hara a scholarship to cover the last two years of his high school education.

Under the rules governing high schools and college sports in the United States, athletes are not allowed to benefit more than their teammates.

In the college system, athletes could lose scholarships if they are found to be in breach of the extra benefits rule and only allowed to take gifts, monetary or otherwise, from immediate family members. more

Relatives of the policeman whose gun was reportedly used by his three-year-old son to shoot the boy's mother to death, are giving him unlimited support as he bears the grief that rocked a Clarendon community on Saturday.

The bizarre incident shook up the Nairne Castle community of North Clarendon, when it emerged that the boy had taken his father's gun from under a pillow and shot his mother fatally while the law enforcer slept.

Now, one relative of the bereaved policeman told the Jamaica Observer that the family was standing by his side, as he had been going through enormous emotional pressure.

"Since the incident, things have not been going well for him and as a result we have to be monitoring him to make sure that he is alright," the relative said.

The Frankfield Police said that about 2:45 pm, mother-of-two Rhea Ricketts, and her common-law-husband were at a house belonging to her mother when the policeman was awakened by a loud explosion.

"He later discovered that Ricketts was shot," a news release from the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force later stated.

Police said the injured woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

No further details were given, apart from the fact that a three-year-old child was also present in the room at the time of the incident.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which has launched its own investigation, stated that the report it received from the police is that Ricketts was allegedly shot and killed, under circumstances that appear to be accidental, by her three-year-old son with the service firearm of her partner who is a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The policeman is attached to the Mobile Reserve. more

Obama, who arrived in Jamaica last Wednesday, was on a one-day working visit. He had bilateral talks with the Jamaican Government and Caricom leaders as well as addressed youth leaders at a forum held at the University of West Indies Mona Campus in St Andrew.

The founder of RAS Records told the Jamaica Observer that Chronixx could have been more 'diplomatic' in his post, but ultimately it is his opinion.

"There are many injustices in the world and those that speak out publicly against them are often chastised, ridiculed or even persecuted," says Himelfarb.

"His intention for what he said was to have Marcus Garvey pardoned. Maybe he could have gone about it more diplomatically, but he has the right to express himself."

Chronixx, 22, came off a strong 2014 with some influential music industry players predicting his imminent breakthrough in the US. He appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in July and headlined the Summerstage event at Central Park days later.

Himelfarb, who ran RAS for nearly 30 years in his native Washington DC, warns that misinformed statements can hurt rising stars.

"I believe that certain beliefs a man has can be reasoned with amongst brethren and sistren but not let out into the public. The public can massacre you."

The Chronixx Instagram rant was triggered by what he considers the US Government's failure to clear National Hero Marcus Garvey of mail fraud in that country. more

KINGSTON, Jamaica — United States President Barack Obama arrived in the island a short while ago at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.
This historic visit marks the second to the island by a sitting US president. The first saw Ronald Reagan arriving in 1982, with yesterday marking the 33rd anniversary of his visit.
Obama, who arrived on Air Force One, is expected to travel on the Marine One helicopter to the Jamaica Defence Force’s headquarters, Up Park Camp.
He is then expected to travel in the presidential limousine, The Beast, to a hotel where he is expected to stay ahead of tomorrow’s activities.

He will leave Jamaica tomorrow evening for Panama to attend the Seventh Summit of the Americas.

CLARENDON, JAMAICA (SHOCKING) : 28 y-o Mother, Rhea Ricketts Shot Dead Allegedly By Three-Year-Old Son In Clarendon

The Clarendon police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 28-year-old woman allegedly by her three-year-old son.

The incident happened sometime around 3 o'clock in the quiet rural community of Nairne Castle in James Hill, Clarendon, shattering the usual Saturday afternoon solitude.

The deceased, identified as Rhea Ricketts otherwise called 'Lucky', was pronounced dead at the Spaldings Hospital in Manchester. She  had one bullet wound to the forehead.

Ricketts lived in Spanish Town, St Catherine but was in Clarendon to pick up the three-year-old child and his one-year-old brother after spending the Easter holidays with their grandmother. The police say the firearm used in the shooting belongs to the child's father who is a cop based in St Catherine. It's reported that the father, having worked last night, was taking a nap after transporting Ricketts to Clarendon to pick up the children.

He had reportedly placed the gun underneath his pillow before he went off to sleep. Meanwhile, Junior Ricketts, the elder brother of the deceased said he was on his way to the house when he saw a family member overwhelmed with tears.  He said he enquired what was wrong and was told that Rhea had been shot by the three-year-old boy. more

His appreciation for Bob Marley music and Red Stripe Beer is well known, and he proved during his short visit that he is comfortable with the Jamaican Patois. But a little-known fact about United States President Barack Obama is that he really loves Jamaican food.

According to US Ambassador to Jamaica Luis G. Moreno, the president was given a sampling of 12 of Jamaica's more famous dishes on his first night in the island. Although Moreno is not sure exactly what the president ate, it is believed that ackee and salt fish, jerk chicken and fried plantains were on the menu.

"He had prepared for him a sampling of Jamaican cuisine the first night he was here, which the chef at the hotel prepared," Moreno said in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Gleaner. "The plates were completely clean when they came to pick up the dishes, so he must have enjoyed it immensely," added Moreno.

Obama, who stayed at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel during his nearly 24-hour stop in the island, was very impressed with the meals and conveyed his appreciation to the chef. "I don't know exactly what the chef did, although I did speak with him and he told me that the feedback that he got was excellent," noted Moreno.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Barack Obama sat down with Cuban President Raul Castro on Saturday, the first substantial meeting between the countries' leaders in more than 50 years.

According to a White House pool report from the Summit of the Americas in Panama City, Obama and Castro, the brother of former Cuban President Fidel Castro, met in a small room in the convention center, and were seated next to each other in "the same set up as when world leaders are hosted in the Oval Office‎."

"This is obviously an historic meeting," Obama said. After 50 years of U.S. embargo toward Cuba, "it was time for us to try something new, that it was important for us to engage more directly with the Cuban government and the Cuban people. WASHINGTON -- Americans mostly approve of the outline of the Iran nuclear deal and don't want Congress to block it, according to a poll released Friday.

The survey by Hart Research on behalf of the Democratically aligned Americans United for Change found that 61 percent of the country favor the deal, while 34 percent oppose it.

And perhaps more importantly, 65 percent of voters don't want Congress to block the deal, compared with 30 percent who do.

The poll, done this week of 806 voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

It also reveals a partisan divide on the issue, with Republican voters being the only ones who oppose the deal -- 52 to 41 percent -- and who are split on whether Congress should interfere, with 48 percent saying to block it and 47 percent wanting the lawmakers to let it advance.

For its questions, the survey largely adopts the descriptions of the United States government, although Iranians have characterized some points differently.

Still, in a measure of the strength of the opinions, 57 percent of respondents said they agreed with supporters of the deal and 38 percent said they agreed with opponents when the positions were cast like this:  more

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The bus conductor who was implicated in the death of 14-year-old Kayalicia Simpson was formally charged with murder by the St Thomas Police on Wednesday, April 8.

In custody is 29-year-old Damion Ewin of Newland Housing Scheme, Yallahs, in the parish.

Ewin has also been charged with committing sexual offences in the same matter.

On Tuesday, March 3, relatives found Kayalicia's body with multiple chop wounds to the head and neck and summoned the police. The post-mortem examination revealed that Kaylacia was also pregnant.

The mother of the South Carolina police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man says her life will "never be the same again."

In an interview with ABC News, Karen Sharpe, the mother of North Charleston Officer Michael Slager, said she doesn't want to think about how long her son will be in jail should he be convicted of murder. He was charged on Tuesday after he was seen on video fatally shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott.

"I'm not gonna worry. I'm not gonna think about that right now," Sharpe said through tears in the interview (above). "What will happen will happen, and that's the way it'll be. I can only hope that it's not forever. I just have to let it be and hope God takes care of everybody involved.

"Not only my family but the Scott's family -- because I know they're grieving just like I'm grieving. So, I want them to know that," she added.

She said she hadn't seen the video of the shooting, claiming that she's "in denial."

She said her son, whose wife is expecting a baby, "loved being a police officer" and "would not do something purposeful" and not be able to help his wife during her pregnancy.

Slager has yet to enter a plea in his murder case. New evidence continues to be made public, including dashboard footage from Slager's patrol vehicle and audio of the suspect's initial calls to dispatch. more

The Hope Road facility, which has been in operation for nearly 30 years, recently reopened it's doors after some structural upgrade.

The museum is reported to attract some 35,000 visitors per year. And President Obama has now been added to that list.

Bob Marley became a superstar in the 1970s, a fruitful period for roots-reggae. He lived at what became the museum in May 11, 1986.

He died of cancer in May 1981 at age 36. more

A fundraising page dedicated to South Carolina police officer Michael Slager was shut down by GoFundMe on Wednesday.

Slager was charged with the murder of 50-year-old Walter Scott after video surfacedof him shooting at the unarmed man eight times. GoFundMe’s public relations manager, Kelsea Little, told The Huffington Post that the page's removal was "due to a violation of our terms and conditions.”

However, Little said GoFundMe was unable to discuss the details of the campaign with anyone other than the organizer because of "privacy concerns.”

One source of outside financial support for the Slager family will be North Charleston. In a press conference Wednesday, Mayor Keith Summey confirmed that the town would continue to pay for the medical insurance of the officer’s wife, who is eight months pregnant, until the birth of the child.

Comparisons have been drawn between the shooting of Scott and Ferguson, Missouri, teen Michael Brown, including the online fundraising for the officer involved in the shooting in response to protests against police brutality.

Controversy swirled around the establishment of two GoFundMe pages that raised money for Darren Wilson, the officer responsible for the fatal shooting of Brown in July. Combined, they had raised nearly half a million dollars before they disappeared from the Internet late August. more

Hope, scepticism as Obama lands in Jamaica : JAMAICANS yesterday expressed mixed feelings about whether the current visit of United States President Barack Obama to Jamaica will be the start of a chain of positive developments for the island and the wider region.

JAMAICANS yesterday expressed mixed feelings about whether the current visit of United States President Barack Obama to Jamaica will be the start of a chain of positive developments for the island and the wider region.

Obama touched down at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) at minutes to eight last night, marking the second visit of a sitting US president to Jamaica.

"We know that the visit is going to be short, but the fact that him choose to come here, we are very happy," remarked Neville Fisher, a farmer in Caymanas Bay, St Catherine.

"This is history in the making," another man interjected.

But others were more sceptical.

"I believe that, with such a short visit, we are not going to see a lot of changes," said Christian Bayle, who was conducting business in Half-Way-Tree, the capital of St Andrew.

Gisele Hussey, who was seen on South Camp Road, shared similar sentiments.

"I believe that not a lot can be done in the short space of time. I believe it may fast-track some roadworks," Hussey quipped.

Marcia Henry agreed. "I believe the time is too short to bring about the changes many people were hoping for," she told the Jamaica Observer.

Henry made the comment as members of the Jamaica Defence Force carried out last-minute preparations to beautify the surroundings of Up Park Camp, which was expected to be the president's first stop after leaving NMIA.

Further away, near New Kingston, a large contingent of police and soldiers were seen monitoring areas such as Knutsford and other areas of New Kingston, where businesses were forced to shutter early as a result of access

The international media isn't paying much attention to President Obama's trip to Jamaica this week, but maybe they should. The country has become a terrible example of what can happen when creditors, led by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), are able to impose harsh austerity on a trapped nation in an attempt to collect on an uncollectable debt. Since the U.S. Treasury Department decides what the IMF does in the Western Hemisphere, President Obama himself can claim responsibility for this crushing economic failure.

Barack Obama-Jamaica I Cry For You

The Caribbean island nation, probably best known for dominating the sport of sprinting, has had declining living standards for the past 20 years. Per capita GDP has fallen by an average of 0.3 percent annually over the past two decades, making Jamaica the worst-performing economy in the hemisphere over this long haul. And this measures only average living standards; it is much worse at the bottom, where poverty has more than doubled since 2007, and where unemployment is currently over 14 percent, higher than it stood during the world recession. But the worst part, and the part where Washington bears the most responsibility, is the country's future prospects. It is currently under an IMF agreement that requires the government to run annual primary budget surpluses -- revenue minus spending, excluding interest payments -- of 7.5 percent. This is the worst such burden in the world. For comparison, Greece was projected to run a primary budget surplus of 3 percent this year, and about 4.5 percent thereafter -- and this is so unsustainable that it is causing a political crisis as well as a widespread belief that it can't possibly happen.

How can something so much worse be done to Jamaica? Besides the obvious fact that Jamaica is much poorer and also over 90-percent Black, it mostly boils down to the creditors' cartel, headed by the IMF, which is calling the shots. This used to be the situation faced by most of the Western Hemisphere south of the U.S., but in the past 15 years the vast majority of the region has gotten loose from the IMF and Washington's grip, winning Latin America's "second independence." Jamaica is an extreme example of what happens to those who were not fortunate enough to get away.

The fiscal austerity that this cartel has imposed would be enough to throw even the U.S. economy into recession, with budget tightening of 5 percent of GDP between 2012 and 2015. Even at the IMF executive board, which must approve the four-year agreement that the country is operating under, about 25 percent of the directors were worried that excessive austerity could threaten Jamaica's "fragile recovery and social cohesion." more
