MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The Manchester police say that a student of the Holmwood Technical High School who allegedly stabbed one of his schoolmates, resulting in his death in hospital on Saturday, will be charged for the crime this week.
Dead is 16-year-old Stephan Hanson of Bloomfield Street in Mandeville.
A section of the Holmwood Technical High School.
According to the police, the two students had a dispute in the town of Mandeville on Friday when Hanson was stabbed. He was taken to hospital where he died Saturday.
Stephen Hanson, father of the deceased, told the Jamaica Observer that he learnt that his son was on the scene, but it was a friend of his who was involved in a dispute with another student, allegedly over a girl, when a knife was brought into play and his son stabbed.
“He was just there. He was not trying to part them,” said the elder Hanson.
Yesterday, Hanson said the family was yet to break the news of his son’s death to his 99-year-old grandmother who had assisted in raising him. He said that she had noticed that he was not home and had asked for him but the family decided to let her pastor deliver the tragic news. “Wi nuh waan the two funeral,” he said.
Hanson said that as a “straightforward Christian” one of the lessons that his great-grandmother reinforced to him daily was to stay away from trouble. “’If no pickney ah fight don’t get into it’,” he said were her words to him before he leaves the house. more

21-year-old Jamaican Lisa Mills insists she will attend Ivy League University, Stanford University to study Law in the USA...Now in her second year at the Marymount College in New York, Mills in on the Dean's List. Mills, who also attended the Havering College in London, graduated from that institution top of her class.

BY RENAE DIXON Sunday Observer staff reporter dixonr@jamaicaobserver.com  Sunday, February 15, 2015
IT is Lisa Mills' dream to go to Stanford University in the United States to study law, and the 21-year-old is excelling academically to make this a reality.
Lisa Mills
The last of six children, her father is putting all that he can in place to ensure that the idea becomes a reality -- Collin Mills is determined to spend all he has for his daughter to accomplish her dream of becoming a lawyer.
"If it is only one pair of shoes mi have left," the proud father declared.
Now studying politics, Lisa believes that she can achieve this dream, and there is no doubt in the minds of those around her as she has been doing well in whatever she takes on.
Now in her second year at the Marymount College in New York, Mills in on the Dean's List. Mills, who also attended the Havering College in London, graduated from that institution top of her class.
The former St Hilda's High School student was awarded the Most Academic Student after completing her studies at Havering College in 2013. When she beat over 1,500 students for the top prize, she was rewarded with the scholarship to Marymount College.
While it is a challenge studying in a foreign country, and doing so while working, Mills continues to do exceptionally well.
A reserved, hard-working woman, Mills was not the type to hit the spotlight while here at home in Jamaica. However, since going to study overseas she has been an outstanding student, gaining recognition wherever she goes.
She is happy that she has been doing well in a 'foreign' country, as she knows that it is usually harder for non-nationals to survive the rough times.
"I feel even more proud being in another country. To fall in line and to be ahead of the line means a lot to me," she stated. more

But, the tumour has now spread to the teen's spine, crippling one of her arms and partially blinding the other eye....Since last June, Williams's expenditure report showed that she has used up close to $5 million trying to get her daughter better....."I am not ashamed to say I am drained financially. I have nothing left," a distressed Williams said. "It's the mercy of God why I feed them every day and still able to take her in (to hospital) when I have to. I still have to pay utilities, take care of the other children, and send myself to work."

Despite fighting a brain tumour that has left her without sight in her left eye and rendered one of her arms useless, 14-year-old Leslie-Ann Goulbourne managed to top her class with an average of 83.2 per cent.
14-year-old Leslie-Ann Goulbourne
But that was June 2014 -- the last time that Leslie-Ann was able to attend classes at St Thomas Technical High School.
Since then, the second former has undergone four brain surgeries, six weeks of radiotherapy, weekly visits to the hospital and numerous tests and scans. But, the tumour has now spread to the teen's spine, crippling one of her arms and partially blinding the other eye.
Leslie-Ann is afflicted by germinoma, a non-malignant tumour that affects the brain and the spine. Germinoma is a germ cell tumour that forms in the pineal gland area of the brain. Pineal tumour patients typically experience a build-up of fluid within the brain, causing headaches, nausea and impaired vision.
"From she was in grade four the headaches come on. But the headaches weren't so intense. It was on and off. She was about nine at the time," Leslie-Ann's mother, 40-year-old Andrea Williams explained to the Jamaica Observer on Thursday.
Andrea Williams wipes the tears from her
eyes as she talks about the pain
 that her daughter feels
.
"She studies a lot because she takes her school work very seriously, so I thought that was why. At that time she started suffering minor headaches until it got worse, where instead of feeling it every two to three days she started feeling it every day."
Williams explained that she continued taking her daughter to private doctors but they kept treating her for sinusitis. However, the situation got worse, and when the child started first form in high school the headaches got so bad that teachers were calling Williams to pick her up from school numerous times per week. more

six-month cleaning.
On February 28, the team, which is led by Dr Anissa Holmes and Dr Keisha Smith-Pagan, is expected to offer free dental cleanings and sealants to 100 children from underserved and underprivileged communities through a community outreach.
The JCDS said children must be registered for this event.
"We (also) invite children between four and 12 years of age across Jamaica to enter our "Defeat Monster Mouth" Colouring Page Competition," said JCDS office manager Melissa Whyte, while inviting parents to visit their website at visit our website at www.jamaicasmiles.com. "Through this campaign, we will reinforce that plaque "monsters" must be removed by effective toothbrushing for good oral health.
She said one child will be selected to win an Ipad mini.
The keys to promoting good oral health at home, according to JCDS, are to have a tooth-friendly diet and encourage good oral hygiene practices.
Tips to promoting good oral health at home
1. Sugar-added and high sugar-content foods and drinks/juices should be consumed at mealtimes and not as snacks. This is because saliva flow increases during meals and saliva helps to rinse food particles away, and neutralise the acids from cavity-causing bacteria found in plaque.
2. Limit between-meal snacks. If kids eat a lot of snacks, they are unlikely to eat at mealtimes. But if offering a snack, give something nutritious, like a fruit.
3. Monitor drink/juice consumption. Between meals, offer water or low-fat milk. more

"I need help. Am I going to die before I get the help I need?" the 34-year-old pondered, just minutes after returning from yet another visit to the Kingston Public Hospital, where she sought medical attention for a persistent cough and chest pain.
"People wouldn't understand what I go through on a daily basis, I'm asking corporate Jamaica to help me, people like Shaggy, the entertainment industry, especially corporate Jamaica. It's not like I can go to the bank and get a loan. I don't even have a bag to pack right now... I'm on hand to mouth right now," she said.
Marshall said that she is surprised, disappointed, and growing despondent, as close to a month after she made her story public in the Sunday Observer, she is still living in fear that any day could be her last.
"The doctor says anything can happen. God forbid, I can close my eyes and that is it," the mother of two young children said.

Feb 14 (Reuters) - Multiple world record-holder and six-time Olympic gold medal winner Usain Bolt will retire after the 2017 World Championships in London, the Jamaican told British newspaper The Daily Mail.

The 28-year had previously hinted the 2016 Rio Olympics would be his last competition but sponsorship commitments dictated he will continue until 2017 where he will focus solely on the 100 meters. "That was the initial plan (to sign off after Rio)," he told the Daily Mail on Saturday.

"But my sponsor has asked me to go on for another year, to 2017 and London. But I'll be doing one event, the 100. "I've already discussed it with my coach. I can concentrate on that, and on retiring on a winning note." Bolt holds the world records for the 100 meters, 9.58 seconds, the 200 meters, 19.19 seconds, and the 4x100 meters relay, 36.84 seconds, and talked of his drive to beat those times in 2015.

His 2015 season culminates at the World Championships in Beijing from Aug. 22 - Aug. 30 where he will attempt to add to his eight world golds and beat the 100 meters record he set in Berlin in 2009."If everything goes well this season, in my life anything is possible. If I can get myself in good shape, it should be wonderful this season," he added.

"I live for competition. I thrive on competition. I live to compete against the best. It means a lot when you beat the best." (Reporting By Tom Hayward; editing Martyn Herman)....

IN JAMAICA: Man defrauds dancehall singer Denyque of $1m... He is Andre Poorman, 38, of Chantilly district

Saturday, February 14, 2015
A Westmoreland businessman accused of defrauding dancehall singer Denyque of $1 million was remanded when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
He is Andre Poorman, 38, of Chantilly district. He is scheduled to return to court on February 19.
Denyke
According to court documents, Denyque (given name Denyque Dontre) paid a manager's cheque of $1 million on behalf of her father to Poorman, who had advertisted an investment opportunity with Ideal Car Rental Services.
Poorman told the artiste that he had bought Ideal Car Rentals and would be merging it with his company, Whitavon Tours and Shuttle Services. As result, he was seeking investors. It is alleged Poorman told her that he had a fleet of seven cars and wanted to increase it to 10. The singer was presented with a contract, which she reviewed and signed.
The contract stated she would receive $80,000 monthly on her investment. Failing that, she could request a refund of the money. Poorman, however, failed to honour his obligations.
When the matter was mentioned on Monday, the prosecutor informed the court that Poorman had similar cases in St James.
The accused did not deny or confirm the reports nor did he address the allegations. He instead requested a week to finalise his legal representation. He was, however, remanded.

Some facts about her and others associated with her:____
BOBBI KRISTINA BROWN: She spent her entire life in the spotlight generated by Houston and Bobby Brown. She attended award shows and appeared on red carpets alongside them, and performed "My Love Is Your Love" along with her superstar mother in 2009. Bobbi Kristina wanted to become a singer and actor just like Houston, who died three years ago. But her career never took off. She ended up becoming a social media sensation, sending more than 11,000 tweets and attracting 164,000 followers. She often claimed she was married to her partner, Nick Gordon, the orphaned young man she grew up with after Houston brought him into the family. She is the sole inheritor of Houston's estate.

NICK GORDON: Bobbi Kristina was living with Gordon at the townhome where she was found in a bathtub. Police say Gordon performed CPR on her while a friend called 911. Houston brought Gordon into her household as an orphan at the age of 12, raising him and her daughter after divorcing Bobby Brown in 2007. Gordon wore a large tattoo of Houston's face on his arm and called the singer "mom," but she never fully adopted him or included him in the will. After Houston's death, Gordon and Bobbi Kristina went public with their romance. Bobby Brown says his daughter isn't and never has been married to Gordon. more

It is fortuitous that the annual day for matters of the heart falls on a Saturday, as Marcia Lawrence said that makes it easier for Countryside to host the event. The name, Shades of Blue, comes from a movie premiere and the club's strategy to make all who want to come to the Courtney Walsh Drive, St Andrew venue comfortable.
Therefore, there is no red in the title.
"So many say they don't have a Valentine, so we want them to be comfortable to come," Lawrence said.

Comrades and Labourites would no more think of sitting down to a meal together than the proverbial lion and lamb finding a mutually acceptable restaurant. Trench Town and its long-time enemies in other communities were not prepared to cross Spanish Town Road, no matter the quality of the menu. Families were separated, some from birth -- brothers, sisters, cousins, all kept to their side of the divide. "Everywhere is war," was voiced by Marley.

Along the way, a new world was being created if you took note of names like Zimbabwe, Mexico, Havana, Angola, Top Jungle, Bottom Jungle; new addresses for the postman. Somewhere along the way, a Trench Town school invited me to be their graduation speaker. There was no evidence that there were any other invitees to bring words of hope, but I couldn't resist. I agreed to go if I could get a police escort. When I got to the appointed meeting place, Spanish Town Road and Collie Smith Drive, not a cop was in sight. Along the street, debris of a grim variety barred the way. It was blockade time.
From behind a pingwing macca fence on one side of the road, a man peered out and asked, "Wha yuh want?" From the shelter of my car, I called out my reason for being on his turf. Another man behind a zinc fence joined the questioning, posing his query: "Wha yuh want round yah?" Satisfied with my answer, he advised the man next door to "pull the block". As the word was relayed from one fence to the next, little by little, the blockade was removed to gimme pass. more

Indulging in a power nap can repair the damage caused by a lack of sleep, new research today claims.
Having a 30-minute snooze can help relieve stress and bolster the immune systems by restoring hormones and proteins to normal levels.
Scientists hope their findings will help shift workers and those suffering insomnia, by mitigating the damage caused by too few hours sleep.
Sleep deprivation not only puts people at increased risk of suffering accidents, but they are also more likely to develop chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and depression. 'The findings support the development of practical strategies for addressing chronically sleep-deprived populations, such as night and shift workers.'

Police responded to reports of gunshots at about 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, when they found the victims' bodies. The shooting happened in a neighborhood that is mostly rental apartments where students live, and crime there is low, according to the News and Observer.
That night, frantic parents waited outside Finley Finest Condominiums, where police were investigating the triple homicide, the Daily Tarheel reports. One mother broke down in tears after she inquired about her daughter and son-in-law, while a father screamed, "It's been hours! Just tell me if he's alive!"
On Wednesday, police said the motive behind the shooting may have been an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking, rather than a hate crime, WNCN reports. more
