HEALTHY THURSDAYS: Power napping really IS good for you: A 30-minute snooze can repair the damage caused by a lack of sleep Naps help relieve stress and bolster the immune system, study finds Scientists hope findings will help shift workers and insomnia sufferers Sleep deprivation increases risk of obesity, diabetes and depression New research found 30-minute nap helps repair damage of too little sleep

By LIZZIE PARRY FOR MAILONLINE
Indulging in a power nap can repair the damage caused by a lack of sleep, new research today claims.
Having a 30-minute snooze can help relieve stress and bolster the immune systems by restoring hormones and proteins to normal levels.
Scientists hope their findings will help shift workers and those suffering insomnia, by mitigating the damage caused by too few hours sleep.
Sleep deprivation not only puts people at increased risk of suffering accidents, but they are also more likely to develop chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and depression. 'The findings support the development of practical strategies for addressing chronically sleep-deprived populations, such as night and shift workers.'
Indulging in a 30-minute power nap can help restore the damage caused by having too little sleep, a new study has today revealed

The study examined the relationship between hormones and sleep in a group of 11 healthy men between 25 and 32.
During one session, the men were limited to two hours of sleep for one night.
For the other session, they were able to take two, 30-minute naps the day after their sleep was restricted to two hours. more

Police responded to reports of gunshots at about 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, when they found the victims' bodies. The shooting happened in a neighborhood that is mostly rental apartments where students live, and crime there is low, according to the News and Observer.
That night, frantic parents waited outside Finley Finest Condominiums, where police were investigating the triple homicide, the Daily Tarheel reports. One mother broke down in tears after she inquired about her daughter and son-in-law, while a father screamed, "It's been hours! Just tell me if he's alive!"
On Wednesday, police said the motive behind the shooting may have been an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking, rather than a hate crime, WNCN reports. more

Violent Los Angeles Carjacking Caught On Camera During Wild Chase (VIDEO)

AP Posted: 02/10/2015 3:42 am EST
MONTEBELLO, Calif. (AP) — A gunman driving a suspected stolen car led police on a wild chase on roads and freeways east of Los Angeles, smashing into other cars and veering through oncoming traffic before he stole a second car at gunpoint and ran down a crowded street before Los Angeles police opened fire, wounded him and finally arrested him.
Officers shot the man as he ran on a roadway and appeared to be trying to steal yet another car before he was handcuffed and taken to a hospital in an ambulance, police spokeswoman Rosario Herrera said.
Police did not release the name or condition of the man, but said he was still alive several hours after the Monday night shooting and is between 20 and 30 years old. more

Harder they come sequel this year ...REGGAE superstar Jimmy Cliff says a sequel to the 1972 Jamaican cult classic The Harder They Come is on the cards for later this year....For the sequel, Cliff says he will reprise the character of Ivan.

REGGAE superstar Jimmy Cliff says a sequel to the 1972 Jamaican cult classic The Harder They Come is on the cards for later this year.
Cliff, 66, was speaking to the Jamaica Observer in an exclusive interview on the weekend.

"We don't know what we'll be calling it yet. But as with the first movie, we had called it Hard Road To Travel and somewhere along the way we called it The Harder They Come," Cliff told the Observer.
"Right now, we're calling it Many Rivers to Cross," he continued.
According to the Grammy-winning artiste, production is slated to begin this winter and scenes will be shot in Britain and Jamaica.
Cliff said the storyline is being put together by an established Broadway writer in New York, but couldn't remember his name.
"He is a scriptwriter, so he's putting in a basic script form," he said.
Directed by Perry Henzell and co-written by Trevor Rhone, the low-budget film The Harder They Come made its debut in Britain in 1972. It made its American run the following year and was shown in New York City, New England and California. The flick introduced Jamaican pop culture to a rock and college audience.
Cliff starred as Ivan, a youth from rural Jamaica who moves to Kingston in search of his big break as a singer. When that fails, he turns to a life of crime. The film is based on Ivanhoe 'Rhygin' Martin, a criminal who terrorised sections of west Kingston in the late 1940s. For the sequel, Cliff says he will reprise the character of Ivan. more

Tivoli plane mystery, FORMER Prime Minister Bruce Golding testifies he never asked US for surveillance aircraft in the operations to apprehend then area don Christopher 'Dudus' Coke....More than 70 people, including members of the security forces, died in the operation.

BY PAUL HENRY Co-ordinator, Crime/Court Desk  Tuesday, February 10, 2015
FORMER Prime Minister Bruce Golding testified in the Tivoli Enquiry yesterday that a United States surveillance plane was in the sky over Tivoli Gardens a day before he spoke to US charge d'affaires to Jamaica Isaiah Parnell about America providing surveillance in the operations to apprehend then area don Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
Front cover of today's paperAdditionally, Golding, who was defence minister at the time in May 2010, said he never requested an aeroplane, but satellite surveillance of Tivoli Gardens to assist the security forces who had gone in to arrest Coke and restore law and order to the community.
Golding made the disclosure while being questioned by Queen's Counsel Garth McBean, the lead attorney for the commission, about footage of aerial surveillance from a US aeroplane of the May 24, 2010 operation.
"I wasn't aware of it at that time. I became aware of it based on reportage that came out of New York by a journalist, who claimed to have access from Access to Information from Homeland Security," he said.
"What I found significant, as well, is that from his reporting... a plane was in place from Monday 24th. My request was made through the charge d'affaires on Tuesday afternoon the 25th," Golding added.
He said that when he heard that footage was available he thought it was from the request that he had made.
At another point during his questioning from McBean, Golding said he thought that his statement in Parliament that the authority to go ahead with extradition proceedings against Coke, who was wanted in the US on drug and gunrunning charges at the time, exacerbated the situation in Tivoli Gardens prior to the start of the police/military operation.
More than 70 people, including members of the security forces, died in the operation. more

Shakera & Vincent Facey
“‘Shackout,’ a you dat!” he wailed as he identified the body of the youngest of his four children. ‘Shackout’ was the name he had fondly called her since she was a child. “It hard, man. It really, really hard,” Facey later told the Jamaica Observer as he came to terms with her death.
“Mi feel it, mi feel it to mi heart! Mi nearly faint weh when mi si her, man. I was in bed about 10:30 last night (Sunday) and get the call that she dead. I was so frightened.
The most I could do is come out of the house and walk up to one of my brother’s yard and drop down on the verandah.
My forehead nearly kill me, like it was tearing off.” Shakera was pronounced dead after 10:00 pm Sunday while at Hope Institute in Mona, where she was awaiting further medical treatment for what was diagnosed as osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone tumour that usually develops in teenagers.
Sometimes a sudden fracture of the bone is the first symptom as affected bone is not as strong as normal bones and may fracture with minor trauma, as in Shakera’s case when she tried to break her fall with her left hand after slipping in June last year.
In October, the tumour began to grow so fast that it rendered her unable to carry out basic tasks for herself. Shakera’s condition was brought to the public’s attention two Sundays ago when her story was featured in the Sunday Observer of February 1, sparking international response from readers who offered to assist the young girl to access medical treatment.
Shakera, who spoke to the Observer up to last Saturday via phone, said that she was in severe pain despite being given morphine, and was still experiencing shortness of breath. more

"Article 19 of the [UN Convention on the Rights of the Child] stipulates that children have the right to be protected from all forms of violence ...,"noted JFJ. more

Hundreds of people in Jamaica and overseas have been lending their support to 19-year-old Shakera Facey, the young woman with the large tumour on her shoulder who was up to last week unsure of what it really was.
Shakera & Vincent Facey
Facey and her father Vincent, who hails from Redwood in Linstead, St Catherine have been receiving a number of phone calls from people showing an interest in assisting the teen to get back on her feet.
Those who said that they would like to contribute financially, have also been praying for her, and others who even put the wheels in motion in getting her overseas for treatment.
"When I read Shakera's story my heart went out to her," said one woman who called the Jamaica Observer from the United States. "To see that such a young girl has to be going through this, it must be very hard. But what I can't understand is why the doctors there are not doing anything about this," she lamented.
As a result, she has taken on the task of getting in touch with persons in Jamaica to ensure that all the proper documentations are speedily in place to fly Shakera to a hospital in Florida which has already agreed to take up the teen's case.
Others from the 'Help Us to Help You Foundation' in England have also reached out and are in touch with the teen's doctor to see how best they are able to contribute to her recovery.
There have been nearly 100 e-mails to the Sunday Observer, dozens of telephone calls and a number of messages posted on various Facebook pages and other social media by well-wishers.

Rula Brown from a radio show in Atlanta, Georgia interviewed both Shakera and her dad on air on Thursday and posted the Sunday Observer story to his Facebook network page reaching over 100,000 readers. "We have to work together in helping people. I thank the Observer for writing the story and for bringing this to the public's attention. I just want to make sure that we do all we can to help so I got an account number from her father and I will be directing persons who want to contribute to send money there. I want to ensure that we do it the right way."
Brown said that he is also making a radio commercial on the teen that will seep through 15 radio stations in the United States and beyond. more

Medical practitioner Dr Alfred Dawes has confirmed the worst fear of a young woman featured in last week's edition of the Sunday Observer — that she has cancer.
Shakera Facey, 19, has a large tumour growing on her arm, and her story resulted in hundreds of responses offering support to her in her plight.
Dr Dawes, who is also president of the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA) reached out to Facey after reading about her condition, which also detailed the family's uncertainty following a diagnosis at the Kingston Public (KPH) which showed the teen's condition to be cancer while examinations by private doctors showed inflammation. He said that the biopsy and follow-up examinations showed that Facey has a rare type of cancer of the bone called an osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is a cancerous (malignant) bone tumour that usually develops in teenagers. Many patients first complain of pain that may be worse at night, and may have been occurring for some time. If the tumor is large, it can appear as a swelling. Sometimes a sudden fracture of bone is the first symptom because affected bone is not as strong as normal bones and may fracture with minor trauma, as in Facey's case when she broke her fall in June with her left hand.
Facey, who resides in Redwood, Linstead with her father Vincent was working in St Ann when she went to dispose of garbage and fell. In an attempt to break her fall, she used her left arm to regain her balance and since then has been complaining of pain in her shoulder. more

Members of the Marley family, entertainment fraternity as well as locals and visitors alike streamed into the venue for the celebrations.
Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, Marley's daughter Cedella noted that it was a joy to see how many persons had come out to show love for her father.
She said it was important, especially for youngsters, to appreciate the way her father lived, which was reflected in the outpouring of love for him on his birthday.
Meanwhile, the Marley siblings are not ruling out the possibility of there being a collaboration among them to mark their father's milestone.
Sons Ky-Mani and Julian noted that the idea has always been touted among the children.
"That idea is still a seed, we have no concrete plans, but the fact that we have discussed it means the project could bear fruit in due season," said Julian.
Both Marleys are currently in studio working on albums which will be released later this year.
Ky-Mani's self-titled project will drop in summer and comprises 15 tracks. The project sees him producing a number of the cuts and has collaborations with German artiste Gentleman, Canadian-Jamaican act Kreesha Turner, and Jewish reggae artiste Matisyahu.
Locals and foreigners alike turned out
 for Friday’s celebrations
"I can't wait to get on the road to promote this project. It's been a while since I have performed in Jamaica and I really want the people here at home to hear the new music. It's a great album... if I can say so myself," said Ky-Mani.
Julian's project is set to drop by spring and is yet untitled. He is just coming off a Brazillian tour with his father's band, The Wailers. more

US created 257,000 jobs in Jan vs. 234,000 est; unemployment rate at 5.7% vs. 5.6% est Jeff Cox | @JeffCoxCNBCcom

A worker installs brake cables at the Bicycle Corporation of America plant in Manning, South Carolina.
The U.S. economy added 257,000 jobs in January, as the unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.
More from the AP:
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers hired at a stellar pace last month, wages rose by the most in six years, and Americans responded by streaming into the job market to find work.
The Labor Department said Friday that the economy gained a seasonally adjusted 257,000 jobs in January, and added far more in previous months than originally estimated. Businesses added 414,000 jobs in November, the government now says, the most in 17 years. Total job gains in December were also revised higher, to 329,000, up from 252,000.
Average hourly wages, meanwhile, jumped 12 cents to $24.75, the biggest gain since September 2008. In the past year, hourly pay has increased 2.2 percent.
The unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. More Americans began looking for jobs, though not all found work. Their job hunting suggests they are more confident about their prospects.
That is ahead of inflation, which rose just 0.7 percent in 2014. The sharp drop in gas prices in the past year has held down inflation and boosted Americans' spending power. Still, wages typically increase at a 3.5 percent pace in a fully healthy economy.
Strong hiring pushes up wages as employers compete for fewer workers. Job gains have now averaged 336,000 a month for the past three months, the best three-month pace in 17 years. Just a year ago, the three-month average was only 197,000.

7 Myths About Omega Fatty Acids....Myth #1: All Omega fatty acids are equal....Myth #2: You should eat as many Omega fatty acids as possible....Myth #3: Safflower, canola, corn, and sunflower oils are good sources of Omega 3s.... Myth #4: Corn and canola are healthy oils & more...

Michelle Schoffro Cook February 5, 2015
Considering all the talk of Omega 3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, you may be left a bit confused as to which ones you should be eating and which ones to avoid. To help you decipher the truth from the myth, here are the 7 most common myths about Omega fatty acids.
7 Myths About Omega Fatty AcidsMyth #1: All Omega fatty acids are equal.
Fact: There is a big difference between the different types of Omega fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, for example, while Omega 6s are pro-inflammatory.
Myth #2: You should eat as many Omega fatty acids as possible.
Fact: Since most people already get excessive amounts of Omega 6s you should likely cut down on Omega 6s, while boosting your intake of Omega 3s, 7s, and 9s. Most nutrition experts suggest that we eat about thirty to forty times the Omega 6s than Omega 3s in our diet. Omega 3s, which we need more of, are found in flaxseeds and hempseeds, Omega 7s are primarily found in sea buckthorn berries and oil (learn more about sea buckthorn here), and Omega 9s are high in olives and olive oil.
Myth #3: Safflower, canola, corn, and sunflower oils are good sources of Omega 3s.
Fact: These oils are highest in omega-6s, the ones you’re most likely getting too much of. Even if you’re not consciously aware of eating these oils they are found in most baked goods, processed and prepared foods. That leads me to Myth #4.
Myth #4: Corn and canola are healthy oils.
Fact: The crops from which these oils are derived are heavily genetically-modified, making any nutritional value they once held insufficient in comparison to the potential health problems they may cause. more

'Desperate' Prince Charles Wanted To Back Out Of His Wedding To Princess Diana, New Book Claims....

The Huffington Post |  By Leigh Weingus Email Posted: 02/05/2015 1:05 pm EST
It's no secret that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were never as perfect a match as they initially seemed, but a new claim that Charles was "desperate" to back out of the 1981 royal wedding makes the marriage seem like an especially bad idea in hindsight.
PRINCESS DIANA PRINCE CHARLESIn a new unauthorized biography, Charles: Heart Of A King, author Catherine Mayer writes that Charles wanted to call off marrying Lady Diana Spencer.
According to The Telegraph, Mayer -- who interviewed members of the Prince's inner circle -- details a moment on the night before his wedding when a "desperate" Charles reportedly told an aide, “I can’t go through with it ... I can't do it." He is also said to have confessed Diana was “not the jolly country girl he had assumed."
Charles wasn't alone in his doubts about the relationship. In a famous account from the 1992 book Diana: Her True Story, for which the Princess of Wales covertly cooperated with author Andrew Morton, Diana told her sisters just days before the wedding that she didn't think she could marry Charles because he was still carrying a torch for Camilla Parker Bowles. more
