Hundreds turn up for Marley’s 70th birthday in Kingston, Jamaica...

BY RICHARD JOHNSON Observer senior reporter johnsonr@jamaicaobserver.com  Saturday, February 07, 2015
THE life and legacy of reggae icon Bob Marley were celebrated at the late musician's home-turned-museum at 56 Hope Road in St Andrew on Friday.
The celebrations marked his 70th birthday.

and Rohan were on hand to greet guests.

Members of the Marley family, entertainment fraternity as well as locals and visitors alike streamed into the venue for the celebrations.
Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, Marley's daughter Cedella noted that it was a joy to see how many persons had come out to show love for her father.
She said it was important, especially for youngsters, to appreciate the way her father lived, which was reflected in the outpouring of love for him on his birthday.
Meanwhile, the Marley siblings are not ruling out the possibility of there being a collaboration among them to mark their father's milestone.
Sons Ky-Mani and Julian noted that the idea has always been touted among the children.
"That idea is still a seed, we have no concrete plans, but the fact that we have discussed it means the project could bear fruit in due season," said Julian.
Both Marleys are currently in studio working on albums which will be released later this year.
Ky-Mani's self-titled project will drop in summer and comprises 15 tracks. The project sees him producing a number of the cuts and has collaborations with German artiste Gentleman, Canadian-Jamaican act Kreesha Turner, and Jewish reggae artiste Matisyahu.
Locals and foreigners alike turned out
 for Friday’s celebrations
"I can't wait to get on the road to promote this project. It's been a while since I have performed in Jamaica and I really want the people here at home to hear the new music. It's a great album... if I can say so myself," said Ky-Mani.
Julian's project is set to drop by spring and is yet untitled. He is just coming off a Brazillian tour with his father's band, The Wailers. more

US created 257,000 jobs in Jan vs. 234,000 est; unemployment rate at 5.7% vs. 5.6% est Jeff Cox | @JeffCoxCNBCcom

A worker installs brake cables at the Bicycle Corporation of America plant in Manning, South Carolina.
The U.S. economy added 257,000 jobs in January, as the unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.
More from the AP:
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers hired at a stellar pace last month, wages rose by the most in six years, and Americans responded by streaming into the job market to find work.
The Labor Department said Friday that the economy gained a seasonally adjusted 257,000 jobs in January, and added far more in previous months than originally estimated. Businesses added 414,000 jobs in November, the government now says, the most in 17 years. Total job gains in December were also revised higher, to 329,000, up from 252,000.
Average hourly wages, meanwhile, jumped 12 cents to $24.75, the biggest gain since September 2008. In the past year, hourly pay has increased 2.2 percent.
The unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. More Americans began looking for jobs, though not all found work. Their job hunting suggests they are more confident about their prospects.
That is ahead of inflation, which rose just 0.7 percent in 2014. The sharp drop in gas prices in the past year has held down inflation and boosted Americans' spending power. Still, wages typically increase at a 3.5 percent pace in a fully healthy economy.
Strong hiring pushes up wages as employers compete for fewer workers. Job gains have now averaged 336,000 a month for the past three months, the best three-month pace in 17 years. Just a year ago, the three-month average was only 197,000.

7 Myths About Omega Fatty Acids....Myth #1: All Omega fatty acids are equal....Myth #2: You should eat as many Omega fatty acids as possible....Myth #3: Safflower, canola, corn, and sunflower oils are good sources of Omega 3s.... Myth #4: Corn and canola are healthy oils & more...

Michelle Schoffro Cook February 5, 2015
Considering all the talk of Omega 3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, you may be left a bit confused as to which ones you should be eating and which ones to avoid. To help you decipher the truth from the myth, here are the 7 most common myths about Omega fatty acids.
7 Myths About Omega Fatty AcidsMyth #1: All Omega fatty acids are equal.
Fact: There is a big difference between the different types of Omega fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, for example, while Omega 6s are pro-inflammatory.
Myth #2: You should eat as many Omega fatty acids as possible.
Fact: Since most people already get excessive amounts of Omega 6s you should likely cut down on Omega 6s, while boosting your intake of Omega 3s, 7s, and 9s. Most nutrition experts suggest that we eat about thirty to forty times the Omega 6s than Omega 3s in our diet. Omega 3s, which we need more of, are found in flaxseeds and hempseeds, Omega 7s are primarily found in sea buckthorn berries and oil (learn more about sea buckthorn here), and Omega 9s are high in olives and olive oil.
Myth #3: Safflower, canola, corn, and sunflower oils are good sources of Omega 3s.
Fact: These oils are highest in omega-6s, the ones you’re most likely getting too much of. Even if you’re not consciously aware of eating these oils they are found in most baked goods, processed and prepared foods. That leads me to Myth #4.
Myth #4: Corn and canola are healthy oils.
Fact: The crops from which these oils are derived are heavily genetically-modified, making any nutritional value they once held insufficient in comparison to the potential health problems they may cause. more

'Desperate' Prince Charles Wanted To Back Out Of His Wedding To Princess Diana, New Book Claims....

The Huffington Post |  By Leigh Weingus Email Posted: 02/05/2015 1:05 pm EST
It's no secret that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were never as perfect a match as they initially seemed, but a new claim that Charles was "desperate" to back out of the 1981 royal wedding makes the marriage seem like an especially bad idea in hindsight.
PRINCESS DIANA PRINCE CHARLESIn a new unauthorized biography, Charles: Heart Of A King, author Catherine Mayer writes that Charles wanted to call off marrying Lady Diana Spencer.
According to The Telegraph, Mayer -- who interviewed members of the Prince's inner circle -- details a moment on the night before his wedding when a "desperate" Charles reportedly told an aide, “I can’t go through with it ... I can't do it." He is also said to have confessed Diana was “not the jolly country girl he had assumed."
Charles wasn't alone in his doubts about the relationship. In a famous account from the 1992 book Diana: Her True Story, for which the Princess of Wales covertly cooperated with author Andrew Morton, Diana told her sisters just days before the wedding that she didn't think she could marry Charles because he was still carrying a torch for Camilla Parker Bowles. more

"... So, overall, we welcomed 71,772 more visitors than in 2013," said an upbeat tourism minister, adding that, "We saw growth out of all our main source markets".
"Stopover arrivals out of Europe grew by 10.7 per cent, while arrivals out of Canada increased by 5.2 per cent; stopover arrivals out of the United States grew by two per cent overall, with an increase of 5.4 per cent out of the West and 5.6 per cent out of the South," McNeill said, noting that inflows of visitors from Asia also increased by 9.2 per cent. more

"I left his lunch money with him. When I was at work I get a call saying that him get shot," Bryan told the Jamaica Observer.

Maggie Lieu, 24 y-o,
Humans have yet to set foot on Mars, but one British woman already wants to be the first to give birth on the red planet.
Maggie Lieu, 24, is an astrophysics Ph. D. candidate at Birmingham University. She is also one of 600 people being considered for the Mars One project, which hopes to set up a permanent colony on Mars by 2025.
Lieu will find out next month if she will join 39 other people who will actually train for the one-way trip to the red planet.
If Lieu makes it to Mars, she plans to get busy colonizing the planet.
“To start a colony we would have to have children on Mars, eventually it would happen," she said, according to the Mirror. "It would be challenging, nobody has done any research on giving birth in a low-gravity environment. I think it would be a funny thing because the first child born on Mars would be the first Martian!" more

ST.CATHERINE, JAMAICA: Murder/suicide shocks McCook's Pen....the bodies of Dave Smith, a 52-year-old tiler and his 27-year-old common-law wife Jodi-Ann McNerr were found in a two-bedroom board house located in the farming community.

SIX children are left without parents following a murder/suicide that rocked McCook's Pen just outside of Spanish Town in St Catherine, Monday evening.
Dave Smith, a 52-year-old tiler, and his 27-yearold
common-law wife, Jodi-Ann McNerr in happier times
The police report that about 6:10 pm, the bodies of Dave Smith, a 52-year-old tiler and his 27-year-old common-law wife Jodi-Ann McNerr were found in a two-bedroom board house located in the farming community.
Reports from the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) are that Smith and McNerr were in an argument earlier in the day when she was stabbed several times. Her body was later found in the house in a pool of blood. The body of Smith was discovered not far away hanging by a length of rope.
Residents say they suspect that the killing was the result of their relationship having turned sour as the two had separated earlier in the year and had made several attempts to reunite.
McNerr leaves behind two children, aged five and seven from another relationship, while Smith died leaving four children.
Residents in the area have expressed shock and anger at the incident.
"Right now I still can't come to terms with this tragic incident. This can't be real," said a man who identified himself as Michael.
Their residence
He was among a group of residents who said that they did not see any indication that the relationship would end in such a gruesome manner.
One person who was left trying to come to grips with the incident was Paul Smith, 27-year-old son of the man who was accused of carrying out the attack.
"All now mi can't come to terms with what has happened, my father was a person who always had big plans and who was always looking to improve his way of living."
"I never saw this coming," said the obviously distraught man. more

VACCINE VACILLATORS (Measles Outbreak) : Rand Paul: Children Got 'Profound Mental Disorders' After Receiving Vaccines...Rand: Vaccinated Children Got 'Profound Mental Disorders'... Christie: Parents Should Have 'Some Measure Of Choice'... Obama: Vaccinate Your Kids... CDC 'Very Concerned' About Potential For Large Measles Outbreak

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) argued Monday that debate over whether to allow parents more choice in the vaccination of their children was a matter of "freedom," citing personal knowledge of kids "who wound up with profound mental disorders" after receiving immunizations for diseases like Hepatitis B and measles.
"I don't think there's anything extraordinary about resorting to freedom," the potential 2016 presidential candidate, who is a ophthalmologist, said in an interview with CNBC.
Rand Paul & Chris Christie
"We sometimes give five or six vaccines all at one time," he said of immunizations of newborns for Hepatitis B. "I chose to have mine delayed....Do I think it's ultimately a good idea? Yeah. So I had mine staggered over several months. I've heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children, who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. I'm not arguing that vaccines are a bad idea, I think they're a good thing. But I think parents should have some input. The state doesn't own your children, parents own their children, and it is an issue of freedom. " more

Donations pour in for Detroit man who walks 21 miles for his daily commute to work....56 y-o James Robertson has done much of his long journey to work on foot since his car broke down

By Jethro Mullen, CNN Updated 1:53 AM ET, Tue February 3, 2015
(CNN)There are tiring commutes. And then there's James Robertson's commute.
The 56-year-old Detroit man walks 21 miles every weekday as part of his journey to and from the factory where he works.
Robertson takes the bus some of the way, according to the Detroit Free Press, which brought Robertson's herculean daily hike to public attention over the weekend.
But for the past decade, ever since his car broke down, he has trudged the better part of a marathon each workday. Rain, snow or shine.

That could be about to change. After reading the Detroit Free Press article, some people felt moved to set up online fundraising efforts to buy Robertson a new car. The donations have come flooding in.
A fundraiser on GoFundMe has blown past its original goal of $5,000, reaching a total of more than $125,000, as of early Tuesday.

Tyler Perry, who was a very close friend of Whitney Houston‘s, has been standing by Bobbi Kristina Brown‘s hospital bedside since she was admitted on Jan. 31. Everyone’s being told to “prepare for the worst,” according to a new report, but Tyler believes there may be hope for Bobbi.

Tyler Perry On Bobbi Kristina Brown’s Condition — His Plan To Heal Her Revealed

“Tyler and Bobby Brown are both keeping hope alive for Bobbi Kristina and the minute she shows signs of tremendous improvement, Tyler wants her to immediately begin her recovery at his home,” a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. Unfortunately, Bobbi Kristina, 21, is currently on a ventilator and new tests show that her brain function is “alarmingly low,” according to TMZ.

Bobby Brown & Tyler Perry Don’t Want To Think About Bobbi Kristina Dying

“While they’re trying not to think about her dying, both Bobby and Tyler don’t want her to die in a hospital. Tyler and Bobby have both discussed the possibility of moving her treatment to Tyler’s house now, but they’ve been told it’s too risky to do that at this time. They both feel like she’ll come back faster if she’s at Tyler’s home, surrounded by all of her family. They’re both in a lot of pain right now and just trying to do anything to get Bobbi better,” our source adds.
We certainly hope Bobbi Kristina pulls through even if that means moving her to another location. more

TMZ EXCLUSIVE: Suge Knight "I Didn't Even Know I Hit the Guy"

2/2/2015 12:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
Suge Knight has a defense to the fatal hit and run ... he didn't know he hit and ran.

Sources connected with Suge tell TMZ ... he claims he was in fear of his life when he gunned his truck, striking and killing Terry Carter and injuring Cle "Bone" Sloan.

Suge says he had just been beaten by 2 to 4 guys while he sat hostage in his truck. And he says, he was frail because he was shot 6 times last Summer and on top of that, almost died recently from a blood clot.

Suge says he was so discombobulated when he floored it he had no idea his truck struck anyone.

Here's the problem ... even if this gets him out of a hit and run, cops still believe he intentionally tried to run over Bone and then hit Terry by accident, and if true that would constitute felony murder. more

BY KIMBERLEY HIBBERT Observer staff reporter kimberleyh@jamaicaobserver.com  Monday, February 02, 2015
OPPOSITION Jamica Labour Party (JLP) Senator Alexander Williams is now set to take on People's National Party (PNP) first-time Member of Parliament (MP) Damion Crawford in East Rural St Andrew following his official presentation to the constituency at a party meeting at Papine High yesterday.
01
Williams and Crawford
Williams who was recently given the new spokesperson portfolio of land and environment was introduced as the party's standard-bearer by party leader Andrew Holness who urged supporters to "invest in their new caretaker".
Crawford, against all odds, beat off a challenge from the JLP's Joan Gordon Wehby to take home the seat for the governing PNP in the last general election but yesterday Holness said Williams is an investment which will pay off.
"I am certain Alex will be an investment that will pay off in your life and in your children's life as well," he said.
Meanwhile, the new caretaker, in his first official address in that capacity, told supporters that in order to ensure everyone has a new way and a better life, a representative who is independent of party politics is needed.
"East Rural St Andrew needs proper representation. East Rural St Andrew needs someone who cares about JLP and PNP," Williams said. more

Hail reggae's King and Prince! THIS week marks the birthdays of reggae's most influential artistes -- Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. Marley, who died in May 1981 at age 36 would be 70 on February 6.

Monday, February 02, 2015
THIS week marks the birthdays of reggae's most influential artistes -- Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. Marley, who died in May 1981 at age 36 would be 70 on February 6.
Dennis Brown died in June 1999. He would have celebrated his 58th birthday yesterday. The Jamaica Observer looks at their careers through daily tidbits in February, recognised as Reggae Month.
Bob Marley and Dennis Brown
* Dennis Brown and Bob Marley recorded for producer Clement 'Coxson' Dodd's Studio One early in their careers. As a member of The Wailers, Marley's hits at Studio One included Simmer Down and It Hurts to be Alone. No Man is an Island and If I Follow my Heart are among Brown's hits for Dodd.
* Marley and Brown performed on two shows during their long careers: the April 1978 One Love Peace Concert at the National Stadium, and at Reggae Sunsplash at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay the following year.
* In 1973, Marley began recording Natty Dread, his first solo album for Island Records. It contained the classic songs No Woman, No Cry, So Jah Seh and Them Belly Full. That year, 17-year-old Dennis Brown teamed with producer Winston 'Niney' Holness and the Soul Syndicate Band for the hit songs Cassandra, Westbound Train and No More Shall I Roam.
