IN JAMAICA: Who Poisoned Senior Superintendent of Police Henry? - Family Demands New Probe As Jury Fails To Finger Culprit

Livern Barrett, Gleaner Writer
A coroner's jury has found that former Senior Superintendent of Police Dathan Henry was "systematically poisoned" in 2012 but said there was not enough evidence to point the finger at those responsible.
Senior Superintendent Dathan Henry.

According to presiding coroner Patrick Murphy, the seven-member jury, in their unanimous verdict, concluded that "rat insecticide" was the agent used to poison the former commanding officer for the troubled Clarendon division that has been linked to the death squad investigation.
"They [jurors] agreed that he was poisoned, but they don't have the information to say how he was poisoned or who poisoned him," Murphy explained.
The verdict, which came after 35 minutes of deliberation, means that if new information is uncovered, the police can reopen the probe into Henry's death.
The family of the late senior cop said they were somewhat disappointed with the outcome because they were "looking for somebody to be prosecuted".
family pushing for probe
Roxan Henry, SSP Henry's brother and the family spokesman, made it clear that they will continue their push to have the police conduct a more detailed probe and are contemplating hiring an attorney to ensure that this happens.
"He did not poison himself ... he did not commit suicide. Someone poisoned him," Roxan Henry insisted. more

Lukie D lusts for more airtime.....His self-produced single -- "Crying Over You" -- has found its way on the playlist of several radio stations.

IN between his busy touring schedule, singer Lukie D still finds time to record. His self-produced single -- Crying Over You -- has found its way on the playlist of several radio stations.
However, he feels it deserves more airtime.
"It is being played, I've heard it. The rotation is not at the level where I would want it. Good music is good music. Once you record a great track, your fans will eventually hear it," he told the Jamaica Observer.
The 42-year-old singer says he intends to release an album next year. His last solo album, Deliver Me, was released in 2006.

Lukie D lusts for more airtime

"The album will be mostly originals, perhaps one cover track. But new stuff will be coming out by year-end going into the new year," he said.
With the decline in record sales globally, Lukie D says touring is a viable option for artistes.
"In addition to a drop in record sales, there is also drastic reduction in the number of local stage shows. So, you have to look outwards in order to survive. You have to tour," he said.
Since the start of the year, the singer has racked up shows in the United States, Canada, Germany, and Grenada. However, he holds a particular location close to his heart.
"Hawaii is like my next yard. They really appreciate good reggae music. I've performed in O'ahu, Kaho'olawe, and Waikiki," he said.
The Polynesian archipelago is home to a number of reggae bands including Malino, The Green, Rebel Souljahz, Rootikal Riddim and Sashamon.
Lukie D, whose given name is Michael Kennedy, is also part of the vocal quartet LUST. They are scheduled to perform at Soul in the Sun slated for The Aqueduct in Rose Hall, just outside Montego Bay, on October 10 - 12.
Lukie D's solo hit songs include Center of Attraction. With LUST, his chart hits include Sweetness of Your Love and a cover of Air Supply's Just As I Am.

Marquis Govan, talks of justice in Ferguson.....Meet the eloquent 11-Year-Old Who Could Change Ferguson and Possibly the World.

Last month Ferguson, Mo., was in full uproar after a police officer shot an unarmed teen. People protested. Cops wore military gear and threw tear gas. The nation was on notice.
Marquis Govan, 11, dressed in khakis and a white dress shirt, appeared before the St. Louis County Council last month and told its members how to help the people of Ferguson: "I would just like to say that the people of Ferguson, I believe, don't need tear gas thrown at them. I believe they need jobs," the sixth-grader said.
He didn't stop there. He asked those gathered on their judiciary perches, "Where are all the African-American police officers in our community?"
He even scolded them a bit: "You're paying attention to the wrong things," he said. "You're paying attention to the looting and things like that, when the real issues aren't being solved. There's a reason why those people are out there."
When he left the podium, people applauded. CBS Sunday Morning sat down with the young man yesterday to hear what other changes Marquis would make, and let's just say if Marquis is the possible leader of a future generation, then the kids are all right.

IN JAMAICA: I'm 40 and can't find a husband in the church LOVE & SEX....The holder of an MBA, owner of her own home and small business, Cindy now realises that there is a shortage of suitable men in the church

By KIMBERLEY HIBBERT  Monday, September 22, 2014
FOR years she has been waiting patiently on the Lord to supply her need for a husband, but Cindy A, 40, is becoming impatient. The 20-year Christian says she has done everything to please God -- she has remained a virgin, valued her purity, and waited for what she describes as the 'perfect man' to come into her life. The holder of an MBA, owner of her own home and small business, Cindy now realises that there is a shortage of suitable men in the church, and that her qualifications may intimidate men. And she can't seek her husband outside, since the church has strict guidelines about who she should date and eventually marry.
01Cindy is now contemplating ending her Christian status to find a man on the outside, so she can enjoy the life and family she thinks she deserves.
She's not alone. Much has been said about the dearth of eligible men in the church, a problem that spans all denominations. The men are either elderly or too young, and never the 20 or 30-somethings needed to match the legion of young Christian women hoping to find a mate.
Reverend Alvin Bailey, president of the Jamaica Evangelical Alliance, says if Cindy knows what she wants but cannot find it in the church, maybe her man doesn't exist.
"Men are not in short supply, and if you can't find a man and a man can't find you, there's really nothing to do. I would encourage her to continue waiting on the Lord and to also understand that not everyone will get married, whether there's enough men or not," he said. more

PRIME Minister Portia Simpson Miller, PNP confident of local gov’t, general election wins

BY BALFORD HENRY Senior staff reporter balfordh@jamaicaobserver.com  Monday, September 22, 2014
PRIME Minister Portia Simpson Miller told supporters at the National Arena yesterday that her governing People's National Party (PNP) will win next year's local government elections, as well as the 2016 General Election.
Portia Simpson-Miller at Arena
The prime minister added that she was confident that the people of Jamaica know that the PNP is the best party to govern Jamaica.
"Comrades, are you ready?" the PNP leader asked the crowd at the party's 76th Annual Conference at the National Arena. The answer was an extended period of deafening vuvuzelas noisily echoing around the arena.
Disparaging comments by Opposition spokesman on finance and planning Audley Shaw that while the PNP Government may be passing the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) tests, it is failing the "people's test", Simpson Miller said:

"I tell you something more, we are going to pass the people's test again next year when local government elections are due. And then, we are going to pass the people's test again, when the big one comes around."
"Comrades, 2016 is not far away. We are not ready yet to step on the gas pedal, but we are tuning up the engine, we are cleaning up the carburettor, we are changing out the air filter, we are dressing up the vehicle: We are getting ready; we are getting ready," she repeated. more

Richie Stephens is introducing a new music genre called Ska Teck Ova

CECELIA CAMPBELL-LIVINGSTON Observer staff reporter livingstonc@jamaicaobserver.com  Monday, September 22, 2014
REGGAE singer Richie Stephens is introducing a new music genre called Ska Teck Ova on his latest single entitled Everybody Dance.
Produced by Christopher Birch and Ainsworth 'Big A' Higgins, the single will be released in a couple of weeks.
Richie Stephens
"It's a blend of old time ska and Electronic Dance Music. I think ska is such a magnificent beat, that if combined with something as fresh, current and exciting as EDM, the world will catch on to it very easily," Stephens told the Jamaica Observer.
Stephens said the idea for the new 'sound' came to him while on tour of Europe recently.
"I was backstage waiting to go on. While waiting, the band was playing a ska rhythm that had me dancing up a storm," he recounted.
The singer said he went on stage with the same energy and the crowd went wild.
"I knew then I had to record a ska song with a new twist," he said.
Stephens, who is among the local acts for Soul in the Sun, said he intends to share the new creation at the event.
Soul in Sun is scheduled for The Aqueduct in Rose Hall, just outside Montego Bay, on October 10 - 12.

Outsold - Billboard Says American Reggae Acts Sell More Than Jamaican Counterparts.... Amid The Noise and Haste has held the top slot for the past three weeks, selling a total of 16,083 units, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

In June, Billboard disclosed some news that many may have found surprising, or perhaps not. The website revealed that United States (US) reggae acts were outselling their Jamaican counterparts, by comparing the number of Jamaican acts that have singles or albums on their charts to the number of US acts also making the list. If you thought the June findings were a hoax, the website did yet another comparison which yielded similar results.
Ziggy Marley - File
Ziggy Marley
The recent findings show five American reggae acts occupying the top 10 positions on the Reggae Album chart for the week ending September 13. SOJA's Amid The Noise and Haste has held the top slot for the past three weeks, selling a total of 16,083 units, according to Nielsen Soundscan. At number three, Rebelution's Count Me In has sold 33,049 units over 12 weeks, surpassing Ziggy Marley's Fly Rasta, which amassed a total of 14,720 units in sale after 20 weeks on the chart. Soca artiste Bunji Garlin's Differentology and Chronixx's Dread and Terriblealso made the list. Dread and Terrible currently holds the No. 12 spot, selling just over 6,000 copies after 21 weeks on the chart.
Up-and-coming reggae band Raging Fyah, in a recent interview, said that reggae continues to grow internationally, dubbing it a good sign for the local music fraternity. When asked to comment on the Billboard findings, the band's bass guitarist, Delroy 'Pele' Hamilton, says while the findings may not be good news for the industry, it bares much truth. more

Covering the courts   with Tanesha Mundle  Sunday, September 21, 2014
A sex worker faced the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last week after she reportedly stabbed a woman in her breast after telling the victim about the size of
her vagina.
Angella Wright, 23, is also accused of attempting to steal the woman's handbag, valued at $2,000.
The police reported that around midnight on May 21, the complainant was passing Haining Road in New Kingston when the accused saw her and shouted out "B... h... Queeny".
The woman replied to the insult, which lead to an exchange between the two.
Further reports said that during the argument the complainant told the accused: "The time yuh deh yah a sell you body you would a go take care a you children."
Wright then told the complainant to leave her children out of the argument.
The accused then reportedly pulled a knife from her bag and stabbed the complainant in her left breast.
The court heard that she then held onto the complainant's bag and tried to pull it from her but the complainant would not let go.
A man who was reportedly with the accused then ran off and was followed by Wright who also fled on foot, the police report said.
The complainant reported the matter and Wright was subsequently arrested and charged with unlawful wounding and attempted robbery.
When the matter was mentioned on Thursday, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith questioned the accused about her place of work.
"On the road", she replied.
When she was further pressed by RM Pusey, Wright added: "Is sex work de two a we do."
However, that was quickly and strongly denied by the complainant.
"No, no ma'am, I am a cosmetologist," the complainant declared.
The court was told that the medical report was outstanding and the case was as a result rescheduled for mention on September 26.
Jealous husband sets house on fire
A farmer who burnt down his house after accusing his wife of cheating was also brought before the court

Tucker is accused of setting fire to a bed at his home which destroyed the entire one-room dwelling that he shared with his wife of 17 years.
The fire occurred on June 23 about 9:20 pm.
The woman claimed that around 8:00 pm she returned home after spending a few days with her sister in Mandeville, Manchester where she had gone to recuperate from an illness.
The complainant said that on entering the house, her husband who was watching television said to her:
"Come out a me house and go back a yuh man yard whey yu a come from."

JAMAICAN Dwayne Dubidad of St. Mary's College - A unique aesthetic....Dwayne isn't just good, he's great, and his pieces tell the story.

By PETULIA CLARKE Education editor  Sunday, September 21, 2014
THE first public acknowledgement of his talent probably came in primary school, where, like his siblings, he did astoundingly well in art. Then came much prompting from his teacher, Ms Chung, at St Mary's College, prodding that made him take enough interest to sit art as a subject in CXC. By the time he entered Mico University College, more encouragement caused him to hone this skill, and begin creating wonders on canvas.
Dwayne Dubidad
Dwayne Dubidad, 30, isn't just good, he's great, and his pieces tell the story. He conceptualises on canvas a kaleidoscope of emotions -- a simple silhouette can tell many tales, depending on the viewer's mood at the time.
And surprisingly, painting wasn't always his passion; he favoured sketching early on.
"My dad has five kids. We are all very good at art. I was good at drawing but my sister is the one who liked to paint," he laughs.
"I took up painting at Mico when my art teacher said that I'd be good at it."
He explained that his hesitation was because of the colour mixing -- "I just couldn't get the right colour."
But then he soon recognised that perfection at mixing came with experience and the more you do it, the better you get. Now he does acrylic, and he is inspired by everything around him. more

CEOLCHUAIRT lamaice, an Irish documentary filmed in Jamaica this year, copped the award for Best Documentary Series at the first Sky Road TV & Film Festival in Galway, Ireland on September 5.
Directed by Paddy Hayes and produced by Laura Ni Cheallaigh, the film is narrated by Irish poet Gearoid Mac Lochlainn.
Drummers and dancers display traditional Maroon
music and movement for Ray MacDonnacha, Irish TV director
 of photography, in Wakefield, Trelawny.
Ceolchuairt lamaice was filmed over 12 days and contains interviews with the Alpha Boys School's musical director Winston 'Sparrow' Martin, guitarist Earl 'Chinna' Smith, musician/producers Sly and Robbie, poet/activist Mutabaruka and percussionist Bongo Herman.
Lochlainn said working on the documentary fulfilled a personal dream.
"The experience renewed my love of reggae and gave me a deeper understanding of its global importance. More than ever the message of Rasta and reggae has so much to teach the world," he told the Sunday Observer.
Ceolchuairt lamaice is part of a six-piece series by TG4 (Irish Language National Broadcaster) called CeolChairt (Musical Journeys). It follows six artistes on a fact-finding mission of the music that influenced them most.
"Ceolchuairt lamaice records my own journey exploring the roots of reggae, which was a huge influence on myself since I was a teenager growing up in troubled Belfast," said Lochlainn.
"Through cover versions by punk rock bands such as The Clash, I came to know and love Jamaican recordings." more

IN JAMAICA: Psychiatric evaluation says accused in beating death of Mario Deane can stand trial 'Fit to plead'

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer reidp@jamaicaobserver.com  Friday, September 19, 2014
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Marvin Orr and Adrian Morgan — the two men charged with the controversial beating death of Mario Deane at the Barnett Street lock-up in early August — are fit to stand trial, the Jamaica Observer was told yesterday.
Reports from psychiatric evaluation done on both men and submitted at yesterday's hearing into murder charges against both accused in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court said they were capable of facing trial.
The results of the evaluation were not read in open court, but a source told the Observer that the report stated that both men understood the charges against them could face proceedings.
The case was postponed to October 3 after it was heard that the file was incomplete as the results of the post-mortem and forensic tests had not been sent to the clerk of the court.
The date for resumption was originally set for October 27, but the absence of a representative from the Independent Commission of Investigation at yesterday's hearing resulted in the date being brought forward to give the independent body a chance to inform the court as to their progress.
A third accused, a deaf mute, has not yet been charged, and the court was told that there were difficulties in locating someone who could interpret for him. more

Thieves Take Off With Sound System Operator's, 82 year-old Mark Banton Lifetime Collection

Thieves Take Off With Sound System Operator's Lifetime Collection

Eighty-two-year-old Mark Banton, owner of London sound system the Mighty Merritone, is today heartbroken after thieves made off with his entire vinyl records collection last week.
The family, who resides in the United Kingdom, told The Gleaner, that they received a call last week Thursday when they found out thieves had broken into their residence in Enfield, St Mary, and left with more than 1,500 of Banton's most prized possessions. Jacqueline Banton, daughter of the sound system owner, said the house was unoccupied for some time, but explained that a caretaker visits daily to see to its general upkeep. It was the caretaker who discovered that the records were missing on Thursday morning after returning to find the home ransacked.
The family said reports following the break-in put two men at the scene of the crime. "We were told that two men broke into the house on Wednesday night, one was allegedly armed with a gun and they had a waiting car nearby." Banton said that after hearing the news, her father was so unsettled that he booked a flight to Jamaica almost immediately. He returned to the island on Sunday to assist in the investigations.
She explained that reports were filed with the Annotto Bay Police Station, and revealed that while the police were helpful in the earlier stages of the investigations, information has been slow in coming since. "We have not heard anything much since the initial stages and it is really sad to see that the police aren't moving with much urgency," she said. "My father loves his music and to see him cry over this situation is heartbreaking, we just want the records returned for the sheer sentimental value they hold."
The family has put up a reward for the person who returns the records, and states that they will even hire a private investigator if the need arises. "We are going to do what we can, and it's not that we do not have faith in the police's ability, but those records mean so much to us as a family that we cannot just sit back and do nothing."

The 17-year-old was among several students at the institution who performed extremely well, making the high school one of the standouts in the examinations.
Joan Anderson, Garwood's mother, said despite the struggle, she expected nothing but the best from her daughter.
"I remember I encountered some serious financial problems while she was attending prep school (Providence Preparatory School), and I broke down in tears and she wiped my eyes and promised me that she will not let my money go to waste, and she has kept that promise," Anderson told The Gleaner.
"She has always been a focused child and one who always finds opportunities to help students as well, and I expect her to continue on the same path," she declared.
Marsha Ford Bryan, year supervisor for the fifth-form group at the school, who pointed to the 100 per cent pass rate in agricultural science and an over 80 per cent pass rate in English language, mathematics and the sciences, said the students have made the institution proud.
