Lancashire, England (UK): Teen, Aaron Parfitt Suspended For Protesting School's Lack Of Homework after he failed a math exam.....“I did it because I needed some attention for them to listen,”

The Huffington Post  | by  Rebecca Klein Email RSS   Posted: 03/20/2014 1:36 pm EDT Updated: 03/20/2014 1:59 pm EDT
It is not often that you hear students complaining about not getting enoughhomework, but when this British student did, he got suspended.
Main Entry ImageTeenager Aaron Parfitt was recently suspended for two days from Bispham High School in Lancashire, England, after he led at least 40 students in a walkout to protest the high school’s lack of rigor, according to the BBC.
Last year, the school received a failing grade from Ofsted, the British government agency that inspects schools, according to the outlet. Inspectors said the school did not provide adequately demanding math and reading standards. Parfitt reportedly felt the need to take action against the school's lack of homework and high staff turnover rates after he failed a math exam.
“I did it because I needed some attention for them to listen,” Parfitt told British outlet the Blackpool Gazette. “Before now I’ve talked to my headteacher, my head of year and the head of maths about problems … I’ve had so many different maths teachers and none of them stop for more than a week.” According to the outlet, the protest only lasted for a short time before students dispersed. more

In fact, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's (JCF) latest Periodic Serious Crimes Review shows that up to March 15, all categories of serious crimes were on the decline.
According to the JCF data, there were 197 reported murders up to last Saturday, 21 less than was recorded over the corresponding period last year.
It also showed that rapes were down 28 per cent; shootings declined five per cent; aggravated assaults were down 33 per cent, larcenies were down 26 per cent; robberies declined 27 per cent and break-ins were down 14 per cent.
Assistant commissioner in charge of crime, Devon Watkis, said the downward trends were the result of the JCF's community policing initiative and the willingness "of the people we lead to be out there and to be proactive".
"We are fully embracing community policing, but there is a concept called proximity policing that we are pushing as one of the main tools," Watkis said. more

According to the communiqué issued following the talks, the regional leaders agreed to the “establishment of a Regional Commission to address the issues identified and any others deemed relevant in order to provide clear guidance with regard to decisions to be taken”.
The Commission is expected to submit a report to the regional leaders at their annual summit in Antigua in July.

JAMAICAN finger-raped victim Shanique Myrie has expressed frustration....'It is not all about the money', but Myrie growing impatient with Barbados over CCJ award ......Last year the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled that Myrie should be paid US$38,620 in pecuniary and non-pecuniary damages

 BY KARYL WALKER Editor — Crime/Court Desk walkerk@jamaicaobserver.com  Friday, March 21, 2014
JAMAICAN finger-raped victim Shanique Myrie has expressed frustration at the length of time it is taking the Barbados Government to compensate her for subjecting her to an illegal cavity search in 2011.
MYRIE... the damage will never be
completely repaired and no money
 can heal that
Last year the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled that Myrie should be paid US$38,620 in pecuniary and non-pecuniary damages by the Barbadian government. But to date not one cent has been handed over to the violated woman.
"It is not all about money, but it is getting a bit frustrating now. I have not tried to pressure them but if they had any form of decency they would have done the right thing," Myrie told the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday.
The CCJ ruled that evidence Myrie presented about an illegal cavity search, detention in a dank, filthy cell at Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport and subsequent deportation was powerful enough for a panel of judges to award her damages.
Speaking with the Observer from her mother's Tower Hill, St Andrew, home, Myrie said she was still exercising patience despite the delay by the Barbadian Government in handing over the cash.
"My motivation was never money. I needed the world to know of the injustice that I suffered and no woman should ever have to suffer that fate," she said. The psychological damage she had to endure has not yet healed, she said. "I still have bad dreams and still remember the horror. The damage will never be completely repaired and no money can heal that. If people ever know the bad feelings they would be surprised," Myrie said. more

IN JAMAICA: GSAT first day marked by usual nervousness as more than 40,000 students completed first day of exams.... "There was one incident where a parent actually cried while dropping off her child," at Alpha Primary in downtown Kingston.

BY KIMMO MATTHEWS Observer staff reporter matthewsk@jamaicaobserver.com  Friday, March 21, 2014
It has become the norm on GSAT day; nervous students and even more nervous parents.
They will again experience the anxiety today — the second of the two-day examinations — after which they will relax, then relapse into fretfulness in another three months when the results are released.
These Montego Bay Prep School students
appear to be in a good mood survey rated
Montego Bay Prep as one of the top
15 GSAT schools.
More than 40,000 primary and prep school students yesterday completed the first papers in the dreaded GSAT (Grade Six Achievement Test) for placement in secondary schools this September.
"I was very nervous for my child, but I am confident that she will do well," said Angela Williams, who was at Dunrobin Primary School in Kingston to give her support to her child.
"There was one incident where a parent actually cried while dropping off her child," said Herman Grace, who waited at the gate at Alpha Primary in downtown Kingston to pick up his son after he completed his exam.
Merlene Williams was a picture of confidence as she, too, awaited her daughter at Alpha. "We are very much encouraged by the level of support we have seen from parents, and based on observation it appears the support continues to grow," said Alpha Principal Millicent Graham. more

IN JAMAICA: Several changes to GSAT in 2015.....Minister of Education, Ronald Thwaites, says that the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) will undergo structural changes, where students will do more critical thinking, rather than memorizing texts.

Thursday, March 20, 2014 | 5:38 PM
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Minister of Education, Ronald Thwaites, says that beginning in 2015,  the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) will undergo structural changes, where students will do more critical thinking, rather than memorizing texts.
Thwaites, Education Minister
“This is the last year GSAT is going to be like it is now. The change is not going to be dramatic, but next year the Science and the Social Studies papers are going to have less questions, and the body of information that your children will have to cover is going to be less,” the Minister said, while addressing members of the Mona Heights Parent Teacher Association, at the school, in St Andrew, on March 19.
Explaining that the change is about helping the children, Thwaites argued that instead of memorizing things, “they are going to think about things and make a judgement between choices, rather than simply memorizing how many lakes are in the Caribbean.”
“Memory is the lowest form of intelligence; judgement and critical choices are higher order skills. What we are doing is trying to build up their competencies, and their skills of natural intelligence that you the teachers are so able to deal with. The exam is going to change bit by bit until about 2017, when it has a different format and different function,” he pointed out.
Thwaites said the Ministry wants to ensure that children are prepared at the primary level to enter the secondary institutions. more

Give Vybz Kartel 50 years — Reneto Adams Former tough cop urges harsh penalty for convicted entertainer......Adams, who expressed delight at the guilty verdict against Vybz Kartel for murder last week,

BY KARYL WALKER Editor — Crime/Court Desk walkerk@jamaicaobserver.com  Thursday, March 20, 2014
FORMER glamour cop Reneto Adams is advocating that convicted entertainer Vybz Kartel be locked up for no fewer than 50 years.
Adams, who expressed delight at the guilty verdict against Vybz Kartel for murder last week, said he bore no grudge against the artiste in particular, but said the country had been done a favour by the panel of jurors.
“I have been one of the voices crying out in the wilderness for criminals to be found guilty and locked up for no less than 50 years for heinous crimes.
01The Jamaican people have suffered for far too long,” Adams told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and André St John were all found guilty by an 11-member jury that voted 10:1 for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, who police say was killed at a house owned by Vybz Kartel on Swallowfield Avenue in Havendale, St Andrew, in August 2011.
Shane Williams was acquitted by the jury, but was subsequently slapped with another murder charge by police. “It is not just Kartel, but all criminal elements.
There have been certain judgements in recent times that give us hope. ‘Zeeks’, ‘Dudus’, ‘Dog Paw’, ‘Andem’ are all in prison,” he said in reference to former gang leaders Donald Phipps, Christopher Coke, Christopher Linton, and Joel Andem.
“I am very elated,” Adams remarked. During the trial of Vybz Kartel, defence lawyers pointed to evidence tampering and sloppy investigative work by some police officers and labelled the police force as corrupt. more

-- Various gowns and everyday clothing -- $5K
-- Art work and paintings -- $5K
-- Living room furniture, dining set, bedroom sets, 2-year-old lap top -- $1,500

KARTEL JUROR: LIVINGSTON Cain, 'Unnu mus' let them go'.....Court told Kartel juror promised to take care of colleagues if they acquit entertainer, co-accused ......alleged proposal to the foreman for a payment of $500,000 for a not-guilty verdict.

BY PAUL HENRY Co-ordinator -- Crime/Court Desk henryp@jamaicaobserver.com  Wednesday, March 19, 2014
LIVINGSTON Cain, the juror accused of attempting to bribe the foreman to return a not-guilty verdict in the Vybz Kartel trial, is said to have approached other jurors.
This was revealed in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court where Cain was yesterday offered $750,000 bail and told to return to court next week Friday.
Cain has been slapped with five counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice and a count of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
According to a statement from one of the jurors that was read in court, Cain had told him that he could take care of him if he returned a not-guilty verdict in the matter.
"I will take care of you as long as you seh weh me a say. These men are promising entertainers and unnu mus' let them go," Cain reportedly told his colleague juror.
As the allegations were being read out, Cain sat looking on attentively. Moments earlier, Valerie Neita-Robertson, who along with Dian Watson appear for Cain, told the court, "Our client denies the allegations".
Neita-Robertson had earlier asked Senior Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams to forego the reading of the allegation, saying that she wanted the matter to "settle down" and "avoid the media attack".
Cain was arrested last week Thursday following the guilty verdict of Vybz Kartel, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones, Andre St John and the acquittal of Shane Williams in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.
Cain's arrest came after a report was made to Justice Lennox Campbell of his alleged proposal to the foreman for a payment of $500,000 for a not-guilty verdict.
Cain is said to be the only juror of the 11-member panel who voted not guilty.
In outlining the allegations in court yesterday, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said that most of the other jurors recounted having conversations with Cain, who told them to find the men not guilty.
According to the allegations, the foreman used her BlackBerry telephone to record the conversation with Cain, which took place at the Supreme Court library. She had been reportedly informed by other jurors prior to the conversation that Cain had approached them.
It is further reported that Cain told the foreman that he realised that she had some influence over the other jurors and wanted her to convince them to return a verdict of not guilty. more

World Bank approves US$42 million to help fight crime in JAMAICA....says more than 80,000 Jamaican citizens will benefit from improved services, basic infrastructure and targeted crime and violence interventions in 18 vulnerable inner-city communities

Wednesday, March 19, 2014
WASHINGTON, DC, USA (CMC) — The World Bank says more than 80,000 Jamaican citizens will benefit from improved services, basic infrastructure and targeted crime and violence interventions in 18 vulnerable inner-city communities as a result of a US$42-million project for integrated community development.
SIRTAINE… the project aims to foster
a more inclusive society in Jamaica
The Washington-based financial institution said the new project is a continuation of the partnership between the Jamaica Government and the World Bank on upgrading some of the country's most vulnerable and volatile communities.
It said the project builds on the success of the "Inner City Basic Services for the Poor Project" to address accelerating urban decay and declining citizen security.
"The project aims to foster a more inclusive society in Jamaica by improving the quality of life of marginalised city dwellers," said Sophie Sirtaine, World Bank country director for the Caribbean.
"It also aims to prevent crime and violence by engaging youth in public safety initiatives and providing them with job skills training," she added.
As a result of the funding, Sirtaine said more than 50,000 people will benefit from improved solid waste management services, street lighting, paved roads and drainage. She said residents in the 18 communities would "feel safer" and that 1,200 families will have their piped water connection repaired and 4,500 residents receiving educational and skills training.
"As we strive to advance the targets of the Vision 2030, where access to reliable services and adequate infrastructure is the norm, enhancing community safety and security is a priority," said Scarlette Gillings, managing director of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund. more

Warning: If you receive an email with the subject "Documents," and it directs you to a webpage that looks like a Google Drive sign-in page, do not enter your information.
It's likely a new phishing scam, in which a thief creates a fake portal that asks for people's private information and then steals it. (Netflix recently faced a similar issue.)
This one uses a fake Google Drive landing page to get your Gmail address and password, cyber security company Symantec's official blog reported last Thursday. You're meant to think that the documents you'll be viewing are on Google Docs and that you need to sign in to see them. Remember, though, it's all a scam.
"We've removed the fake pages and our abuse team is working to prevent this kind of spoofing from happening again," a representative from Google tells The Huffington Post. "If you think you may have accidentally given out your account information, please reset your password."

Feds Bust Online Child Exploitation Network; 14 Men Arrested......BUSTED: Child Porn Ring Lured 250 Victims Around The World....Some Victims Under 3-Years-Old, most were boys between 13 and 15.

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fourteen men were charged with operating an online child exploitation network that investigators said preyed upon hundreds of boys across the United States and overseas, authorities announced Tuesday.
Law enforcement officials said the arrests were part of a worrisome trend in which children are being enticed by adults to post sexually explicit images of themselves that are then shared online. In this case, authorities said, users of an underground network posed online as girls to coerce boys into sharing with them child pornography images.
Shadow Bedroom"These alleged perpetrators preyed upon the most innocent, most vulnerable members of our society with no regard to the immediate or lasting harm they caused to their victims and their families," Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said at a news conference.
The investigation, called "Operation Round Table," was led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and federal authorities in Louisiana, where the alleged leader of the operation lives.
The roughly 250 victims were spread across 39 states and five other countries — Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada and New Zealand. Most were boys between 13 and 15. Two victims were 3 or younger, authorities said.
The pornographic images were shared on an underground website on the Tor network, an online anonymity network that masks the location of servers and conceals an Internet user's location. The subscription-based website operated from about June 2012 until June 2013, had more than 27,000 members and shared more than 2,000 webcam-captured videos, mostly of young boys, authorities said. Eleven of the 14 men, including the man authorities say was the administrator of the network, are being prosecuted in Louisiana. The other three are being charged in New York, Colorado and Wisconsin. more

PUTIN: CRIMEA IS OURS!....ANNEXED... Lashes Out At West... JOKESTER: Claims Russia Did Not Invade... Gets Standing Ovation... Says Russia Doesn't Want Any More Of Ukraine... Biden Lands In Poland... LATEST UPDATES...

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday fiercely defended Russia's move to annex Crimea, saying the rights of ethnic Russians have been abused by the new Ukrainian government.
In a televised address to the nation, he said Crimea's vote Sunday to join Russia was in line with international law, reflecting its right for self-determination.
To back the claim, he pointed to Kosovo's independence bid from Serbia — supported by the West and opposed by Russia — and said that Crimea's secession from Ukraine repeats Ukraine's own secession from the Soviet Union in 1991.
He denied Western accusations that Russia invaded Crimea prior to the referendum, saying Russian troops were sent there in line with a treaty with Ukraine that allows Russia to have up to 25,000 troops at its Black Sea Fleet base in Crimea.
Earlier, Putin approved a draft bill for the annexation of Crimea, a key move in a flurry of steps to formally take over the Black Sea peninsula. Russia's Constitutional Court and the Kremlin-controlled parliament are expected to quickly endorse the move. Some lawmakers said that Crimea could be made part of Russia by the end of the week. more

"We don't want it to be the same. We set it up like a club with the deejay in the middle," said Michael Ammar, a director of Bacchanal Jamaica, the event organiser. Ammar said word about the weekly fete was getting out and that was reflected in the patronage.
"This is a very good crowd for week two. What I notice is that there are different people from last year... The more new people come, they will come back," he said. The revamped Appleton-branded VIP area, outfitted with a dance floor, was the newest hot spot.
"We decided this year to enhance the VIP experience and were sold-out every week. We've improved on the entire experience," said Gary Dixon, marketing director at J Wray & Nephew. more

Two The Hard Way - Calabar-KC Battle To Decide Champs

TOP SPRINTERS Zharnell Barnes of Kingston College (KC) and Calabar High's Michael O'Hara are expected to be key combatants as they and their teams vie for individual 100 and 200 metres awards, as well as the overall title, at next week's Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls Athletics Championships.
O'HARA
Michael O'Hara
Both have been running well all season and their form suggest they could run close to the records established by Yohan Blake (10.21 for 100m) while running for St Jago High in 2007; and Usain Bolt (20.25 for 200m) while representing William Knibb in 2003.
In the lead-up to Champs, O'Hara is number one over 100m with a 10.29 clocking at Camperdown Classics, while Hughes did 10.36 at the Western Relays.
NOT ONLY STANDOUTS
However, they are not the only schoolboys with pedigree, as Bog Walk's Jevaughn Minzie logged 10.31 at the Douglas Forrest meet.
For the 200m, the competition gets sharper with the expected inclusion of Javon Francis, also of Calabar.
Hughes, of Anguilla, is number one this season, clocking 20.80 at a Development Meet at the National Stadium the week after the GibsonRelays. O'Hara follows with 21.29, when himself and Francis were joking around as they approached the finish at the Douglas Forrest meet. The latter timed 21.31. Minzie's best so far is 22.08. more
