Cuba President Raul Castro, calls for regional integration free of the US

HAVANA (AP) -- Cuban President Raul Castro called on Latin American and Caribbean leaders Tuesday to work together on pressing regional problems at a gathering of all Western Hemisphere nations except the US and Canada.
In his keynote speech as host for the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, or CELAC for its initials in Spanish, Castro argued that the bloc should aspire to unity despite diversity, describing it as "the legitimate representative of the interests of Latin America and the Caribbean."

"We should establish a new regional and international cooperation paradigm," Castro said. "In the context of CELAC, we have the possibility to create a model of our own making, adapted to our realities, based on the principles of mutual benefit."
The summit's main theme is fighting poverty, inequality and hunger. According to the UN's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, 28 per cent of the region's inhabitants live in poverty and 11 per cent in extreme poverty. Tuesday's session of heads of CELAC states began with one minute of silence to remember the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who succumbed to cancer last March.
Chavez, an outspoken US foe, was a driving force behind CELAC's creation in 2011. It was conceived as an alternative to the Washington-based Organisation of American States, which suspended Cuba's membership in 1962 shortly after Fidel Castro's revolution. more

4-year-old Anala Beevers with IQ of 145 becomes Mensa's newest member

Anala Beevers
Anala Beevers is 4 and smarter than you.

Anala — who learned the alphabet when she was only 4 months old, her parents say  has an IQ over 145. The New Orleans toddler recently was invited to join Mensa, the high-IQ society for people who score at the 98th percentile or higher on the standardized intelligence test. Anala is in the 99th percentile.

Anala loves geography, knows the location of every U.S. state and the names of their capitals. She even carries a map of America everywhere she goes. "She needs a reality show," her father, Landon Beevers, told People magazine. "She keeps us on our toes."

She also knows she's smart. "Really smart," Anala says. Her mother, Sabrina Beevers, says Anala is constantly correcting the family's grammar. "She's a handful," Landon Beevers said. "I'll tell you, she's a handful." Anala is not the youngest Mensa member. In June, Adam Kirby, a 2-year-old from London, became the youngest boy ever to join Mensa, according to the Digital Journal. Emmelyn Roettger, a 2-year-old from Washington, D.C., joined last year, becoming the youngest U.S. member. more

THE relatives of Nakiea Jackson, who was killed by the police under controversial circumstances last week Monday, have managed to block a hastily arranged post-mortem on his body from being conducted yesterday.
Jackson's sister, Shackelia Jackson-Thomas, told the Jamaica Observer that none of his relatives had been informed by the police that an autopsy was to take place at the Kingston Public Hospital morgue yesterday.
Nakiea Jackson

Jackson-Thomas said staff at the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) stepped in and ordered that the autopsy be put on hold. The commission was also not informed of the intention to conduct a post-mortem on Jackson's remains. more

THE vulgar display by female deejays Lady Saw, Macka Diamond Sting clash disappoints Marcia Griffiths.

THE vulgar display by female deejays Lady Saw and Macka Diamond at the 2013 staging of the one-night reggae show Sting in December has left one veteran reggae artiste sorely disappointed.
Singer Marcia Griffiths, who celebrates her 50th anniversary in the music industry this year, in a rare comment on the state of the music business, noted that she is "turned off and disappointed" by what took place between the two females at Jamworld Entertainment Centre in Portmore, St Catherine during the early hours of December 27.
Marcia Griffiths
Griffiths says she feels a personal sense of disappointment in the display of the two artistes.
"I am ashamed that I, as an elder in the business, who have inspired so many other women... it is a turn-off for me to see women go on stage and behave in that manner," Griffiths stated at yesterday's Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange. more

VYBZ KARTEL MURDER TRIAL: BB message tells of 'Lizard' being chopped up and thrown away......"Yeah man a mince meat dat." Chilling evidence in Kartel case

DAMNING BlackBerry messages and video footage painted a trail of possible involvement in the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams by Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused in the riveting trial in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston yesterday.
People in the court had their mouths agape when a message sent from a cellular phone attributed to Vybz Kartel, on August 19, 2011 was displayed on a screen and read out by prosecution witness, Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton. "Tween me an u a chop we chop up the bwoy Lizard fine fine and dash him way inuh. As long as u live dem can never find him," the message stated.
Kartel
Yet another read: "Yeah man a mince meat dat."
But defence attorney Tom Tavares-Finson objected to the evidence and claimed that Linton had tampered with it.
When the message was first displayed only the words 'Tween me and u' were visible. However, after Linton adjusted the format the entire sentence appeared and Tavares-Finson objected furiously. This caused fireworks to fly between himself and Justice Lennox Campbell, who allowed the evidence. "With the greatest of respect, Your Lordship is ignoring me," Tavares-Finson said angrily.
"Mr Finson, you don't tell what to determine. I will determine that. You will get your chance during cross-examination," Justice Campbell said sternly.  more

Richard Sherman’s journey from Compton to Stanford University......Sherman pushed back on the media and the public’s view of him as a “thug,”....Sherman earned a 4.2 GPA at his high school in Compton.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman pushed back on the media and the public’s view of him as a “thug,” saying “stop trying to label people” and using his own background as a Stanford-educated black man from Compton to illustrate his point.
Richard Sherman
“I’ve kind of had to be a chameleon of sorts because you walk, I mean, you drive from Compton to Stanford and you’ve got to be able to flip the switch. The culture’s too different to treat them both the same and I think it’s not right to treat them both the same,” Sherman told msnbc’s Chris Hayes on Monday, describing his first encounter with Stanford as “culture shock.”
“Where I’m from, there isn’t a lot of culture, a lot of diversity,” Sherman said of Compton, a rough neighborhood in south Los Angeles. “I was kind of shocked [at Stanford]: shocked at the way they’re talking, the conversation, the dialogue.”  Sherman earned a 4.2 GPA at his high school in Compton.
“A kid from Compton who hadn’t seen too much outside the city, to tell you the truth, had to really adjust and really acclimate to that environment,” Sherman said. more

7 Skin Tricks That Will Cost You Nothing: 1) Drink water... lots and lots of water 2) Get at least seven hours of sleep each night 3) Reduce your sun exposure & more.......

waterIf, like us, you're broke after the holidays but looking for a good skin pick-me-up, fear not -- there's plenty you can do with absolutely zero cash. So stop dreaming of pricey products and save your money for more important things... like clothes.
1. Drink water... lots and lots of water. We've all heard the argument that skin is an organ made up of cells, which are composed of water. Therefore, the more water you drink, the better... right? Kind of.
The whole eight-glasses-a-day theory has been debunked, but studies have shown that drinking water improves circulation. While this doesn't necessarily guarantee wrinkle prevention, dermatologist Dr. Margaret E. Parsons told the New York Timesthat "if dehydrated, fine wrinkles certainly seem to show up a bit more." She added, "Staying appropriately hydrated is good for our general health, and if we are eating and drinking what we should, our bodies are healthier and therefore our skin as well."
2. Get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Yes, there really is something to the whole "beauty sleep" concept. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night..... more

WINTER OLYMPICS: Sochi Mayor Says There Are No Gay People In His City

The mayor of Sochi is under the impression that there are no gay people in his city.
Anatoly Pakhomov spoke with the BBC ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics and discussed how gay people would be treated in the Russian region with the country's"homosexual propaganda" law in place. Pakhomov said gays are welcome at the Games in spite of this, so long as they "respect the laws of the Russian Federation and [don't] impose their habits on others."
He claimed gay people do not have to hide their sexuality in Sochi. "No, we just say that it is your business, it's your life. But it's not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city," he said. He later admitted that he isn't absolutely certain there are no gay people in Sochi. "I am not sure, but I don't bloody know them." There are at least two gay clubs in the city, Russia's RT noted. Russian social networks also point to multiple lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities in the area. more

But on Monday, Stockman finally decided to make his existence known again, insisting he has been traveling abroad on official duties as well as spending time campaigning in Texas.
In comments to Breitbart News, Stockman said he traveled to Russia, Egypt, Israel and England as part of an official 10-day congressional delegation trip. Neither Stockman's office nor the House Foreign Relations Committee immediately returned a request from The Huffington Post about the exact dates he was abroad. more

INSPIRATIONAL STORY: What It's Like To Be An Adult College Student And Graduate At Age 72.....dropped out of the 10th grade in 1956 (VIDEO)

Here's all the proof you'll ever need that it's never too late to get an education.
Van McKellar had always wanted to go to college, but after dropping out of the 10th grade in 1956, it seemed he would never make it. Years later, his dream came true when he joined his daughter as a homeschool student. After some much-needed catching up on math, McKellar was accepted to Metropolitan State College of Denver, where he graduated in 2012 at 72 years old with a degree in African American studies and a minor in history.

McKellar shared his inspiring story on HuffPost Live (available in the video above) and explained what it's like trying to keep up with a bunch of 20-year-olds.

IN JAMAICA: Education is our only hope......This is in fact a clarion call to action.....No longer should poverty be allowed to be a bandit of our young people's dreams operating with impunity.

AS we start the new school semester I am compelled to resurrect the discussion about the effective funding of tertiary-level education.

Students at Tarrant High School attend a computer class.
This is in fact a clarion call to action. No longer should poverty be allowed to be a bandit of our young people's dreams operating with impunity. Daily I am confronted with other Jamaicans who are cerebral and who have been fighting to free themselves of the shackles of poverty by hopping onto this vehicle called education which, even with the fare increases, remains the only legitimate modality for upward social mobility.
It is accepted that education is the ultimate redemptive tool for families that suffer from abject poverty. Education is responsible for the triumphs of many successful businessmen, nation-builders, and leaders.
No longer can we continue to enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought, thus I have cerebrated long about the matter and I have placed some recommendations before the Parliament. more

Through his research, Seligman discovered that happy people have consistent habits which may be introduced into our day to day life. Take a moment to read this delightful article, in which Seligman introduce the 16 habits of exuberant human beings. In his 2004 Ted Talk.

Seligman describes three different kinds of happy lives: The pleasant life, in which you fill your life with as many pleasures as you can, the life of engagement, where you find a life in your work, parenting, love and leisure and the meaningful life, which "consists of knowing what your highest strengths are, and using them to belong to and in the service of something larger than you are."After exploring what accounts for ultimate satisfaction, Seligman says he was surprised.

The pursuit of pleasure, research determined, has hardly any contribution to a lasting fulfillment. Instead, pleasure is "the whipped cream and the cherry" that adds a certain sweetness to satisfactory lives founded by the simultaneous pursuit of meaning and engagement. more
