It warned of heavy winds and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day as the storm moves up the East Coast.

New trial sought for 14-year-old boy executed in 1944
COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — A 14-year-old boy executed by South Carolina nearly 70 years ago is finally getting another day in court. Supporters of George Stinney plan to argue Tuesday that there wasn't enough evidence to find him guilty in 1944 of killing a seven-year-old and an 11-year-old girl. The black teen was found guilty of killing the white girls in a trial that lasted less than a day in the tiny Southern mill town of Alcolu, separated, as most were in those days, by race. N ....More

More Internet training for Jamaican youth........ Google engineer hosts app workshop at UWI
FOR two hours a day last week, some university students were briefed on best practices and industry techniques by software Google engineer, JJ Geewax.
Students pay keen attention to Google’s JJ Geewax during the software engineering workshop at the UWI campus recently. |
Twenty computer science students at the University of the West Indies were taught techniques in web development and software engineering, how to make better use of software development tools, and how to avoid common mistakes and pitfalls when building applications.
Computer science Lecturer at the UWI, Dr Daniel Coore, lauded Geewax for his efforts in aiding the development of the tech landscape in Jamaica.
"One of the things I'm happy about in seeing people like JJ participate in Jamaica is the fact that he provides not just financial support, but also provides encouragement for students, who are interested in (tech) activities; that it is an option." more
Canada Wants Weed - Medical Ganja Company Boss Says Country Would Purchase Jamaican Marijuana
Canada is willing to purchase marijuana from Jamaica, a lucrativedeal that could potentially earn billions of dollars for the country on an annual basis.
Blaine Dowdle, chief executive officer of Canada-based MedCannAccess, is urging Jamaica to act quickly and seize the vast economic opportunity that could come from legalising marijuana and establishing an export market for the product.
Blaine Dowdle, CEO of MedCannAccess, Canada, looks on as Wanda James, member of Cannabis Global Initiative out of Colorado |
According to Dowdle, his country is looking to engage in the potential CDN$1.2-billion medical marijuana market. However, it is very expensive to grow marijuana in Canada, and hence investors there would be more than willing to import it from Jamaica.
Noting that medical marijuana currently retails for approximately CDN$7-$10 per gram in Canada, he said the product was in demand, which makes it a very profitable market. more
World's 85 richest people have as much as poorest 3.5 billion: Oxfam warns Davos of ‘pernicious impact’ of the widening wealth gap......Oxfam calculated that almost half the world’s wealth – $110trn – is owned by just 1 per cent of its population......85 richest people own as much as bottom half of population, report says (VIDEO)
The 85 richest people on Earth have the same amount of wealth as the bottom half of the population, according to a new report that highlights growing income inequality as political and business leaders gather for the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Those wealthy individuals are a small part of the richest 1% of the population, which combined owns about 46% of global wealth, according to the report from British humanitarian group Oxfam International.
The study found the richest 1% had $110 trillion in wealth -- 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the population.
That bottom half of the population owned about $1.7 trillion, or about 0.7% of the world's wealth. That's the same amount as owned by the 85 richest people, the report said.
The findings undermine democracy and make it more difficult to fight poverty, the report said. more

Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis says: Gov. Chris Christie Wanted Me Out Of Senate Race.......He bullied me too.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis says Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped a plan to appoint him the state's first physical fitness ambassador when he launched a political campaign against a Christie friend.
Lewis said Monday the governor called to dissuade him from running as a Democrat for state Senate in 2011 against Republican Sen. Dawn Addiego (ah-dee-AY'-goh). Lewis says he was told the fitness program they'd been developing wouldn't materialize if he ran. Lewis says the governor felt the post "was a carrot he could pull away."
Lewis withdrew from the Senate race after a court ruled he didn't meet a residency requirement. He now lives in Houston. more
Jamaica bobsled team is heading to the Sochi Games.......Watts was unsure about its ability to participate because of funding. He estimated he needed up to US$80,000 to make the Olympic trip.
(AP)-- Jamaican bobsled pilot Winston Watts and the nation's Olympic Committee said Monday they are accepting an invitation to compete in next month's Sochi Olympics.
It's the first time the Jamaican bobsled team will compete in the games since 2002. The invitation comes after Watts accumulated enough points in lower-tier races in North America to qualify.
"Oh, man, it's really overwhelming," Watts said in a telephone interview Monday. "I'm really happy. I have the whole entire world behind us. The Jamaica bobsled team is very popular, but when I see and hear that the whole entire world, even the Middle East — I mean, really, there's a place in the Middle East that calls me and I don't even know its name — we have fans from so far away. For a little tiny island, it's so emotional." more

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations Honor The Late Civil Rights Activist
ATLANTA (AP) — The nation paused to remember Martin Luther King Jr. Monday with parades, marches and service projects.
King was born Jan. 15, 1929, and the federal holiday is the third Monday in January.
In Atlanta, a service was planned at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was pastor. In Memphis, Tenn., where King was assassinated, an audio recording of an interview with King would be played at the National Civil Rights Museum. The recording sheds new light on a phone call President John F. Kennedy made to King's wife more than 50 years ago.
Historians generally agree Kennedy's phone call to Coretta Scott King expressing concern over her husband's arrest in October 1960 — and Robert Kennedy's work behind the scenes to get King released — helped JFK win the White House. more

THE legalisation of ganja was the talking point among artistes at last weekend's Rebel Salute.
Stitchie & Bounty Killa |
Almost every entertainer gave their opinion on the 'burning' topic and urged the Government to 'free up' the herb which was recently decriminalised in the American state of Colorado.
It seemed 'legal' to smoke at Richmond Estate in St Ann as ganja was peddled openly in front of police personnel.

JAMES... the brand has been coming out of Jamaica for a very long time |
Wanda James who is one of the most well known of the activists behind the legalisation of ganja in Colorado, the first US state to do so, told the Cannabis Stakeholders Forum that her group, the Cannabis Global Initiative, wanted to ensure that Jamaica got what it deserves — "which is a lot" — from a ganja industry.
"The brand is Rastafarian's. The brand has been coming out of Jamaica for a very long time," said James who is married to Jamaican and fellow Colorado ganja activist, Scott Durah.
Organisers of the Forum described James as one of Obama's most powerful fundraisers, who was no doubt pivotal in helping the Democrats to carry the state of Colorado in the 2012 presidential elections. more
'We are killing those who are our future' — JTA........ Slain teacher remembered as a ward of the state who defied the odds to excel
PRESIDENT-ELECT of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) Doran Dixon yesterday urged those responsible for fixing the crime problem to start treating the situation as "desperately serious".
"How many more young productive persons will have to die before we come to the realisation that we are in a crisis and those who have the duty... to stop this must begin to take it desperately serious?" Dixon questioned as he addressed the funeral service for Mona Primary School teacher, 26-year-old Paul Watson, at Andrew Memorial Seventh-Day on Hope Road in Kingston yesterday.
Watson's life was snuffed out by criminals who shot and killed him along with his friend Omar Campbell at a bar in Bay Shore Park, Harbour View, in Kingston on January 4. Three other people were also injured in the incident.
"It cannot continue to happen, and as a country we are killing those who are our future," Dixon lamented during the reflection on behalf of the Mico University College where Watson earned a teaching diploma, specialising in social studies and physical education.
The JTA executive, who remembered the slain teacher as a unique and hard-working individual said, "Watson was a different kind of youth; he was the kind of person who got involved and was into everything." more
IN JAMAICA: DEATH SQUADs: Ex-cop claims extrajudicial killings are planned, ordered by senior officers
Hinds |
A RETIRED cop and a serving police officer have broken the unwritten vow of silence within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to reveal how, they claim, cold-blooded killings are ordered by senior officers.
But Deputy Commissioner of Police Glenmore Hinds has rebuffed the claims relayed to The Sunday Gleaner, arguing that police personnel are sworn to uphold the law and that there are appropriate avenues for them to take if they are ordered to operate contrary to their duties.
“They (police) know their obligations. They know what the law is, and one would want to believe that if they get something that is contrary to the law, then they have recourses,” Hinds insisted, as he noted he was hearing the allegations for the first time. “There are a number of independent bodies set up to investigate the police.” more

STATES MULL FIRING SQUAD.....NIGHTMARE EXECUTION PUTS DEATH PENALTY IN CROSSHAIRS... Court Acknowledged Untested Cocktail As 'Experiment'...
One day after a controversial lethal injection case in Ohio put the death penalty in crosshairs, another set of state lawmakers have proposed legislation that would allow execution by firing squad.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Friday that Missouri's HB 1470 puts that option on the table. State Rep. Paul Fitzwater (R-Potosi) told the paper that he cosponsored the legislation with the victims in mind. “People look at inmates who will be executed as victims,” Fitzwater said. “But the real victims have no voice because they are gone.”
The Missouri bill arrives alongside that Ohio execution, which saw Dennis McGuire suffer through a 26-minute infusion of chemicals into his body. According to the AP, that was the longest of 53 executions in Ohio since the state reinstated capital punishment in 1999. McGuire's son, also named Dennis, told the AP that the death process was torture, adding that "nobody deserves to go through that." more

JAMAICAN BOBSLED IN WINTER OLYMPICS IN RUSSIA: Organisers say Jamaica qualify for Sochi Games Cool Runnings 2?
THE Jamaican bobsled team may be headed to another Olympics. The catch: It needs a lot of money, and it needs it fast.
Olympic organisers said yesterday that Jamaica has qualified for the two-man competition at the Sochi Games, though it remains unclear if the fledgling squad will get a chance to race. Funding is a serious problem and sled driver Winston Watts told The Associated Press yesterday he's trying to raise as much as US$80,000 in the next two weeks to cover travel and equipment costs. "Right now," Watts said, "we're at zero."

They are certainly among the world's most storied bobsled teams, and that has little to do with results. Jamaica first competed in Olympic bobsledding in 1988 at the Calgary Games, a story that inspired the Cool Runnings film. For a nation lacking bobsled tradition, or snowy winters, Jamaica has often fared quite well on the international circuits..
It's been 12 years since Jamaica has had a sled in the Olympics, with Watts finishing 28th at the Salt Lake City Games with Lascelles Brown — now a key part of Canada's national team. Brown won a medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games, one where the Jamaicans were hoping to compete, but were again thwarted by funding issues. more
IN JAMAICA: 18-year-old Kadeja Braham's dream denied by death.......Young woman's demise to rare disorder blows her hopes of modelling, flying
IN a mere 22 days, a cruel twist of fate shattered 18-year-old Kadeja Braham's dream of advancing from a promising modelling career to becoming a flight attendant.
Kadeja Braham |
Last Thursday night, Kadeja succumbed to Stevens-Johnson syndrome, described by health experts as "a rare, serious disorder in which your skin and mucous membranes react severely to a medication or infection".
An example of what the disorder does to the skin is seen on this patient overseas. |
The speed with which the illness ended the Pulse model and Guy's Hill High School past student's life has devastated her family, who are still trying to understand what went wrong, given that Kadeja had shown no sign of illness before.
To add to their grief, they need to find at least $556,000 to settle Kadeja's medical bills, which they racked up in a desperate attempt to save her life. Kadeja's date with destiny started on Christmas Day 2013 when she felt the symptoms of a fever and took over-the-counter flu tablets before reporting to work at the downtown Kingston boutique where she was employed. more

What she got was $142,000 to defray the cost of a single back-up generator plus an additional $200,000 in recovery grants.
In an exclusive interview, Zimmer broke her silence and named Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Richard Constable, Christie’s community affairs commissioner, as the two officials who delivered messages on behalf of a governor she had long supported.

31 y-o Nun Gives Birth To 9 pounds Baby Boy In Italy
A Salvadorean nun who said she had no idea she was pregnant gave birth in Italy this week after she felt stomach cramps in her convent and was rushed to hospital, Italian media reported on Friday.
The 31-year-old mother and her baby boy, who weighs 3.5 kilograms (9 pounds), are doing well and other new mothers in Rieti hospital have begun collecting clothes and donations for her, the reports said.
"I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain," the nun was quoted as saying at the hospital, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. La Repubblica said she gave birth on Wednesday. ANSA said the nun had named her baby Francesco (Francis) -- also the pope's chosen title and one of the most popular names in Italy, where St Francis of Assisi is the much-loved national patron saint. The hospital could not be reached for comment.
The nun belongs to the "Little Disciples of Jesus" convent in Campomoro near Rieti, which manages an old people's home and reports said she would keep the baby. Her fellow nuns were quoted saying they were "very surprised". Copyright (2014) AFP. All rights reserved. more

(CNN) -- The image of Solomon Northup's body hanging from a tree -- noose around his neck, hands tied behind his back, feet barely touching the ground -- is uncomfortable to look at.
And Steve McQueen, director of "12 Years a Slave," does not spare the audience with an expedient exit.
There is no overbearing soundtrack to drown out the sound of him gasping for air. For what feels like an eternity, McQueen makes us watch. He makes us listen. He makes us know the truth about slavery in a way no Hollywood film in recent memory has. The beatings are not brief. Christianity is not spared. There are no scenes of white heroes racing against time to save him or undo the injustice that is being done.

The musical is based on Marley's children's book, Three Little Birds which she says was inspired by her three sons..
"That was the song that could put them to bed at night and wake them up in the mornings," she said. "My middle son was getting bullied at school. He would come home crazy sad and I would hum the song to him."
The Three Little Birds musical originated in Washington, DC, last year, and Marley remembers bringing her children to opening night.

"To see the little children in the audience singing along -- I thought maybe they would know 1-2 songs, but they knew so many," she said "I was like, 'wait a minute!' They were singing 'One love'."
In addition, the musical includes the title song Jamming, Roots Rock Reggae, I Shot the Sheriff and Is This Love.
The show will play at the New Victory until February 23. more
