The 2014 special report, "A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back From The Brink", examines the financial insecurity among American women and the impact it has on the U.S. economy.
"We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn’t a reality yet," Beyoncé wrote in the excerpt. She goes on to address men and their roles in promoting gender equality:

Steve Kornacki Floats New Theory About Chris Christie's Bridge Scandal (VIDEO)

MSNBC host Steve Kornacki floated a new theory as to why New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's staff and appointees engineered the closure of two lanes leading into the George Washington Bridge last year.

Kornacki
"It wasn't just the everyday lives of commuters and residents that were altered or in some cases jeopardized by what happened in Fort Lee," Kornacki explained. "Something else was affected and possibly jeopardized, something of enormous economic and political significance."
Kornacki explained that there is currently a billion dollar development project in Fort Lee, right next to where the lane closures occurred. The project is a keystone of Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich's tenure. As Kornacki explains, the closure of two of the three access lanes may have been part of a larger effort to shut them down for good, which could have significantly diminished potential investors' interest in the project. Close the lanes, and the entire project could be derailed. read more

George Thompson, 104, still puffs away at his cigar Father of 18 recounts a lifetime of struggle

AT 104, George Thompson seems to be debunking medical beliefs that smoking kills, as he continues to puff away at cigars, a habit that he picked up over 47 years ago.
"Yes man, mi still smoke. When my wife left me, that is when I started the hard smoking," Thompson stated as he sat in his kitchen at Greenwich Town last Wednesday, six days after celebrating his birthday.

"Mi nuh smoke ganja, but mi will drink the tea because I find use in it," he said. "You see why I might live so long? I don't mix myself with ganja, just tobacco mi smoke. And I will only smoke cigarette if I'm here now and I see somebody out the road have a cigarette I will take it and smoke, but mi not smoking it off, mi just take a draw and give it back. It is just a dirty habit," Thompson said as he reached for a small 'scandal' bag with tobacco which he was about to prepare for smoking. Chris Christie Scandal
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaks during a news conference Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014,
Two days after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) claimed he had no knowledge of a political scheme conducted by his aides to cause traffic jams, the lawmaker heading a probe into those actions unraveled a new thread.
New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D) told NBC News Saturday that if Christie was at all aware of his aides' actions, impeachment could emerge as a potential issue.
"Using the George Washington Bridge, a public resource, to exact a political vendetta, is a crime," Wisniewski said. "Having people use their official position to have a political game is a crime. So if those tie back to the governor in any way, it clearly becomes an impeachable offense."

Countless studies have connected the eating plan to lower risks of heart attack and stroke and some have suggested the diet can even slow or prevent memory loss. Researchers speculate that the protective benefits likely stem from the combined effect of the diet’s healthy fats and nutrients.
Now a new study shows that the Mediterranean diet alone may be enough to reduce the risk of diabetes, without the need to lose weight or exercise. Read more:

Study: Marijuana Compounds Can Kill Some Cancer Cells.....Taking pills with the non-psychoactive elements, not smoking it.

Compounds derived from marijuana can kill cancerous cells in patients with leukemia, according to a recent study.
The study, published in the Anticancer Research journal, was partially funded by GW Pharmaceuticals. which already produces a cannabis-derived drug to help people with multiple sclerosis. Dr. Wai Liu studied six different non-psychoactive cannabinoids (compounds derived from marijuana that don’t get the user high like its THC component does). He found that certain non-psychoactive cannabinoids “resulted in dramatic reductions in cell viability” and “caused a simultaneous arrest at all phases of the cell cycle,” according to the study summary posted online.
Marijuana leafLeukemia will take the lives of an estimated 23,720 people this year. This isn’t the first time marijuana has been linked to deterring cancer: In 2012, researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco found that CBD — a non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis — can stop metastasis in some kinds of aggressive cancer. Liu told the Huffington Post that smoking cannabis is unlikely to have the same cancer-inhibiting effect. Even Rush Limbaugh Thinks Fox News Is Too Pro-Christie The Huffington Post | By Jack Mirkinson

Rush Limbaugh took Fox News to task for what he said was its blinkered, "predictable" coverage of the Chris Christie bridge scandal.
The network has drawn attention for the relative lack of air time it's given to the Christie story, but Limbaugh had other issues with the way Fox News was handling it.
Rush Fox News"Fox has always been unpredictable, but now they're starting to become [predictable]," he said. He added that it had been easy to predict what the "Republican line" about Christie's Thursday press conference would be: "Man oh man, this guy, greatest leader, greatest potential leader the Republican party has fielded in who knows how many years...he buried the thing!"
Limbaugh wondered aloud how "learned" pundits on Fox News could think Christie had put the bridge scandal behind him.
'I’m reading some of these comments they’re making, and I’m in disbelief!” he said.

KERON Bailey promised to reward his younger brother John-Michael Hett with money if he passed six Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) subjects this year, but that is a promise neither brother will be able to keep, for 16- year-old Hett was on Wednesday laid to rest in a tearful ceremony at The Church of Jesus Christ on West Avenue in Kingston..

The teenager, a student of Dunoon Technical High School, was slain on December 9 in Portsmouth, Portmore, St Catherine, during an incident which mourners said was cruel, untimely and undeserved.
Even before the start of the service, students and teachers alike wept openly as they viewed the body of their former classmate, charge, and friend.
Hett’s form teacher, Donna Brown, could not hold back her tears. “I have been his form teacher since he was in grade nine and I must say I am very sad. To tell you truth, I am very hurt. I am hurt, but most of all, I am angry.
Angry because he was one of the persons I would say is innocent. He is an innocent youth who just turned 16 in November and he was a student I was very close to,” Brown told the Jamaica Observer in almost inaudible tones.
She added that Hett was among her favourite students because of what she said was his impressive attire, good behaviour and positive attitude towards learning.

“He was a prefect and not a class monitor, but he often acted as the form monitor of the class. He was the one who did most of the class monitor’s work.
I’m so speechless and hurt right now,” Brown said as she wiped tears from her eyes. Veneshia Lemonious, Hett’s science teacher, also commented.
According to her, Hett’s academic performance was satisfactory and she was expecting him to produce good grades in the upcoming sitting of the CSEC exams. “I taught him in the last two years. In my class, he got grades such as 70 and over.
It is very sad. He was a well-behaved student, disciplined and hardworking,” Lemonious said.
Dunoon’s principal, Shawn Aarons, who stood silent among his colleagues outside the church for most of the proceedings, told the Observer that he was still shocked that of all the students at the school, Hett was the one who lost his life in such a cruel manner, and during the festive season at that.
“When I think of John- Michael it’s difficult to find words. However, the aspect of him I would like to reflect on is that he always wanted to challenge himself. He always wanted to do something new. He was always on the go. That is what I will take from him. Always being busy.
Always moving up and down,” Aarons said. Hett’s brother, Bailey, who now resides in the United Kingdom, was unavoidably absent from the service. However, he penned a tribute which was read by his wife, Marsha.
“I promised him a monetary incentive and a bonus if he passd with distinctions. He told his mom he would have passed with distinctions.
I encouraged him to strive for excellence; however, that will not be,” Marsha said. Numerous tributes in song by teachers and students of Dunoon and nurses of the Bustamante Hospital for Children where his mother, Una Hett, serves as a nurse, followed.
The teachers did a rendition of Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ In The Wind. The students followed with renditions of I’m Free, Lean on Me, and Bridge Over Troubled Water. read more

RUEL LOWE EDITORIAL: A possible bright future for Jamaica, If?

Ruel EL
Ruel Lowe

That island nation roughly ninety miles due south of Cuba, that goes by the name Jamaica, is almost unique. For a nation whose size is roughly one hundred and fifty miles measured from east to west and fifty miles from north to south. It is hard to believe and accept the fact that Jamaica has been a world leader in many fields, e.g. the sport of ‘Track and Field’, music in the form of Reggae Music, academics, arts and the sciences. However this small country that, many of us call home is plagued by many of the issues and problems of small developing nations,(national debt, crime, corruption and poor governance) are but a few of the major issues the island faces.
These issues and short comings are well documented and are obvious. Solutions must therefore be presented and proposed in the form of visionary ideas to resolve many of these problems, so that many Jamaicans with skills that would benefit the country, who are presently living abroad, will be motivated to return to the island. read more

Jamaican Broadcaster Johnny Daley harrassed by T&T Immigration and Customs officers

01Daley vented his anger at the shabby treatment on the social network website Facebook on Tuesday and said he felt like a criminal even though he broke no immigration law and was not in possession of any contraband or banned items.
In November, the denial of 13 Jamaicans who were forced to sit on a hard bench, taunted by airport officials and sent back to Jamaica drew the ire of many Jamaicans who called for a ban on Trinidadian products.
The issue forced Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to send a delegation, headed by her foreign minister Winston Dookeran, to hold diplomatic talks with his Jamaican counterpart A J Nicholson. read more
