Chris Christie Apologizes For Bridge Scandal, Insists He's 'Not A Bully' (VIDEO)
WASHINGTON -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) apologized to the residents of his state Thursday, saying he had fired his deputy chief of staff and cut ties with his top political adviser after learning they had carried out a mean-spirited political payback scheme that caused massive traffic jams around the country's busiest bridge..
"I apologize to the people of Fort Lee, and I apologize to the members of the state legislature," said Christie. "I am embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct of some of the people on my team. There is no doubt in my mind that the conduct that they exhibited is completely unacceptable and showed a lack of respect for their appropriate role of government and for the people that we're trusted to serve." read more
JAMAICA: Bloodshed in St Elizabeth......Four young men, including two 15 year-old high school students, were murdered in two separate incidents in their communities late Wednesday.
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — For the first seven days of 2014, St Elizabeth recorded no murders. Sadly, the early tranquillity turned out to be only a false dawn.
Residents of Thornton in the Siloah area of north-east St Elizabeth and of Maggotty/Elderslie in the parish's north-west awoke early yesterday to grief.
KNIGHT... four murders in one night in a parish like this has serious implications |
Four young men, including two 15 year-old high school students, were murdered in two separate incidents in their communities late Wednesday.
The two teenagers, identified as Desrick Williams of Balaclava High School and Ashnell Coke of Maggotty High, reportedly left home in Thornton about 4:00 pm to catch shrimp at a nearby stream. When the boys failed to return home within a reasonable time their parents reported them missing to the Siloah police.
A search uncovered their bodies some time after midnight early Thursday. The bodies reportedly had chop wounds to the head. read more
Another plea for more public support in crime fight
JAMAICANS were urged yesterday to give greater support to the police as they step up their fight against criminals who were responsible for the 1,197 murders committed in the island last year.
"As a people, we need to do more if we are to bring crime under control," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Winchroy Budhoo, who heads the Mobile Reserve.
He was speaking at the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF)/Mobile Reserve New Year's devotion at Harmon Barracks, Kingston, yesterday. The event was held under the theme 'Giving Thanks, Celebrating God's Faithfulness'.
Yesterday members of the ISCF, in giving thanks for the achievements made last year, said they were concerned about the crime problem but vowed to do all in their power to bring the scourge under control. read more
RUEL LOWE EDITORIAL: A possible bright future for Jamaica, If?
Ruel Lowe |
That island nation roughly ninety miles due south of Cuba, that goes by the name Jamaica, is almost unique. For a nation whose size is roughly one hundred and fifty miles measured from east to west and fifty miles from north to south. It is hard to believe and accept the fact that Jamaica has been a world leader in many fields, e.g. the sport of ‘Track and Field’, music in the form of Reggae Music, academics, arts and the sciences. However this small country that, many of us call home is plagued by many of the issues and problems of small developing nations,(national debt, crime, corruption and poor governance) are but a few of the major issues the island faces.
These issues and short comings are well documented and are obvious. Solutions must therefore be presented and proposed in the form of visionary ideas to resolve many of these problems, so that many Jamaicans with skills that would benefit the country, who are presently living abroad, will be motivated to return to the island. read more
Jamaican Broadcaster Johnny Daley harrassed by T&T Immigration and Customs officers
DESPITE claims by Trinidad and Tobago officials that Jamaicans are not being singled out for bad treatment when they arrive at the Piarco Airport, popular broadcaster and comedian Christopher 'Johnny' Daley is claiming to have been mistreated by airport officials.
Daley vented his anger at the shabby treatment on the social network website Facebook on Tuesday and said he felt like a criminal even though he broke no immigration law and was not in possession of any contraband or banned items.
In November, the denial of 13 Jamaicans who were forced to sit on a hard bench, taunted by airport officials and sent back to Jamaica drew the ire of many Jamaicans who called for a ban on Trinidadian products.
The issue forced Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to send a delegation, headed by her foreign minister Winston Dookeran, to hold diplomatic talks with his Jamaican counterpart A J Nicholson. read more

WASHINGTON — Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson wants his colleagues to get the world more excited about science.
Well-known for being both entertaining and informative, Tyson spoke to seasoned scientists and up-and-coming students here Monday night (Jan. 6) at the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society about the best ways to interact with conventional and social media.
Tyson emphasized that many of the things that have endeared him to people outside of the field of astrophysics — such as "discovering" Superman's home planet Krypton, thereby making real science part of the superhero's lore — were easily replicable by his audience. Gary Spaulding, Senior Gleaner Writer
A majority of Jamaicans do not harbour expectations of the clouds lifting to make way for a brighter socio-economiclandscape this year, a survey commissioned by the Jamaica National Building Society has found.
The survey, which focused on topical issues and was undertaken last month by Johnson Survey Research Limited, found that by a significant 8:1 ratio, Jamaicans were pessimistic about the turn that the country was taking, with unemployment and crime grabbing the spotlight.
The survey also found that 75 per cent of the 1,008 Jamaicans interviewed believes their personal economic situation has worsened, with an insignificant one per cent saying it's much better.
Another 11 per cent is of the view that life is a little better, while 17 per cent said it has remained the same.
DECLINE IN ECONOMIC STANDING
Nearly half the persons interviewed between December 7 and 15 said their economic standing deteriorated, while 22 indicated that it has got marginally worse.

SHOCK CLAIM: FOX NEWS CHIEF OFFERED $100/WEEK FOR SEX......Book On Roger Ailes Says He Had Horrible Temper, Offered Raise In Exchange For Sex
Fox News chief Roger Ailes offered a raise in exchange for sex, dubbed Bill O’Reilly "a book salesman with a TV show" and has a terrible temper, a new book alleges.
Gabriel Sherman's The Loudest Voice in the Room, a biography coming out Jan. 21, offers a scathing look at Ailes, according to an early look by The New York Times.
Roger Ailes, Fox News CEO |
Former employees cited in the book talked of Mr. Ailes’s volatile temper and domineering behavior. In one anecdote, a television producer, Randi Harrison, told Mr. Sherman that while negotiating her salary with Mr. Ailes at NBC in the 1980s, he offered her an additional $100 each week “if you agree to have sex with me whenever I want.”
Fox News denied the charges against Ailes, according to the Times. Some Fox sources have preemptively worked to dismiss the book, and Ailes even handpicked a journalist to write a biography after Sherman's was in the works. Ailes fired his top communications executive, Brian Lewis, last year, and some suggest the firing was in part because Ailes suspected the executive leaked information to Sherman. read more

Corporate Jamaica Bats For The Children in SHAGGY & FRIENDS benefit
As far as the eye could see on Saturday, January 4, members of corporate Jamaica were in full support of the Shaggy and Friends concert. That is, after they got over the time-consuming hurdle of actually entering the Jamaica House venue.
The wait at the Hope Road entrance was agonising. The pile-up was due largely in part to a long wait for a special official to enter. Many persons, tired of waiting, simply parked along the roadside and walked the long way to the venue. And once there, it was another lengthy delay to get armbands.
Shaggy says blood shortage affecting Jamaica....... Your Health Your Wealth
INTERNATIONAL artiste Shaggy, the man behind the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation that is geared towards raising funds to offset some of the needs of the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, said recently that a shortage of blood is another major problem affecting the country.
Since 2009, Shaggy whose given name is Orville Burrell, has raised US$2 million in support of the children's hospital through a charity concert. Just last weekend, the latest instalment of the charity concert was held, and though the final numbers on how much was raised are still out, the number of patrons who attended the event and the ticket sales are indications of just how well the event did this year.
Shaggy |
But, according to Shaggy, another problem that should be addressed is the shortage of blood affecting the island.
"We have a very bad blood problem in Jamaica," Shaggy told a group of reporters at a Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange meeting held at the newspaper's headquarters on Beechwood Avenue in Kingston, recently. "Pickney a dead, people a dead, because dem nuh have blood." read more
