KINGSTON, Jamaica : Cocaine weighing 362 kilograms with an estimated street value of J$494 million was seized at the Kingston Wharf

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Cocaine weighing 362 kilograms with an estimated street value of J$494 million was seized at the Kingston Container Terminal at Port Bustamante Saturday morning.
No one was arrested in connection with the seizure, the largest since the start of the year, police say. Information from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) say that about 8:20 am security personnel were making checks at the facility when they came across “an empty container”.
The police and members of the Contraband Enforcement Team of Jamaica Customs were alerted. An examination of the container, which originated in Venezuela and destined for the Netherlands revealed ten travelling bags with rectangular parcels containing cocaine. Personnel from the TCND are investigating. Read more:

Six Things Nelson Mandela Believed That Most People Won’t Talk About....1. Mandela blasted the Iraq War and American imperialism....2. Mandela called freedom from poverty a “fundamental human right.”...3. Mandela criticized the “War on Terror” and the labeling of individuals as terrorists without due process & more...

In the desire to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life — an iconic figure who triumphed over South Africa’s brutal apartheid regime — it’s tempting to homogenize his views into something everyone can support. This is not, however, an accurate representation of the man.
Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela
Mandela & Castro
Mandela was a political activist and agitator. He did not shy away from controversy and he did not seek — or obtain — universal approval. Before and after his release from prison, he embraced an unabashedly progressive and provocative platform. As one commentator put itshortly after the announcement of the freedom fighter’s death, “Mandela will never, ever be your minstrel. Over the next few days you will try so, so hard to make him something he was not, and you will fail. You will try to smooth him, to sandblast him, to take away his Malcolm X. You will try to hide his anger from view.”

As the world remembers Mandela, here are some of the things he believed that many will gloss over. read more

IN JAMAICA: Web Of Corruption - JPs, Doctors And Civil Servants Colluding To Allow Persons To 'Beat The System'....."I gave the man my $20,000 and the form in the morning and him drop off my driver's licence at mi house that night".

Western Bureau:The tag of corruption, placed on justices of the peace (JPs) who are collecting fees for the services they should be providing for free, is being linked to a wider scheme involving other public officials.
"It is all but impossible for a corrupt JP to get away with an act of deception without being in collusion with other public officials," a senior JP based in St James told The Sunday Gleaner, on condition of anonymity.
"For example, to get a driver's licence back door (illegally), it usually requires a corrupt JP, a corrupt doctor, a corrupt person at the examination depot and corrupt officials at the Island Revenue Department, all working in collusion."
The various corrupt officials work in tandem with a middleman who arranges the transaction, sometimes without the person getting the driver's licence having to leave his or her house.
"I gave the man my $20,000 and the form in the morning and him drop off my driver's licence at mi house that night," confessed one man who admitted to 'buying' his licence. read more

Wow: Columnist's Awful Comments On Mandela's Death

The world mourned the death of Nelson Mandela on Thursday, but at least one British columnist wanted it to stop mourning quite so much.
Rod Liddle--a writer for the Spectator magazine whose views on race tend towards the incendiary--scoffed at the amounts of coverage he was seeing on the BBC:
It's as if the poor bugger now has to bear your entire self-flagellating white post-colonial bien pensant guilt; look! Famous nice black man dies! Let's re-run the entire history of South Africa. That's better than watching the country we're in being flattened by a storm.
Liddle hedged his bets by allowing that, "on balance," Mandela had probably done good in the world.
    Criticism came swiftly. read more

NELSON MANDELA DEAD at 95........Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]) (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]) (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999..
Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended the Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After theAfrikaner nationalists of the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was elected President of the Transvaal ANC Branch and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961 but was found not guilty. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotageand conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.
Mandela served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife. Becoming ANC President, Mandela published his autobiography and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He was elected President and formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to defuse ethnic tensions. As President, he promulgated a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. Continuing the former government'sliberal economic policy, his administration introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty, and expand healthcare services. Internationally, he acted as mediator between Libya and the United Kingdom in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial, and oversaw military intervention in Lesotho. He declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy, Thabo Mbeki. Mandela subsequently became an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Read more

"Let me just say that this meet is fully endorsed by the JAAA... the JAAA is big on the development of our youths, and the genesis of our Olympians are heralded by meets such as this that we are doing here today," said the principal of Kingston College. The meet has contributed to the development of many athletes such as Asafa Powell, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Melanie Walker, and of more recent vintage, Odean Skeen and Jazeel Murphy, to name a few.
The meet, which started in 1998 to honour the memory of the late founder of the Mountain View Avenue-based Excelsior High School Dr Aston Wesley Powell, has grown steadily throughout the years and has become a permanent fixture on the JAAA's calendar and the first stop for many schools as they seek to qualify for the ISSA Boys' and Girls' Championship. Read more:

Blood at Kartel’s home.... But forensic analyst says DNA didn’t match uncle of ‘Lizard’

GOVERNMENT forensic analyst Sharon Bryson testified in the Vybz Kartel murder trial yesterday that blood, believed to be that of a male, was found at the entertainer’s house.
However, she testified that DNA analysis of the blood did not match that of the uncle of the man the prosecution believed to have been murdered.

Bryson gave the evidence during her examination-in-chief that blood, believed to be that of victim Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, was taken from the Havendale, St Andrew, house and that a swab was done of Williams’ uncle for DNA.
“The DNA did not match that of the uncle,” Bryson told the court. Asked by lead prosecutor Jeremy Taylor what could account for the failure to match DNA, Bryson said Williams’ uncle may be from his mother’s side of the family. Under cross-examination by defence attorney Tom Tavares- Finson, who appears with Chris Tavares-Finson for Kartel, Bryson said she was unable to say that the blood taken from the house was that of Williams.

THERE was no evidence taken yesterday in the Vybz Kartel murder trial due to the unavailability of witnesses, which resulted in an early adjournment.
The adjournment came after lead prosecutor Jeremy Taylor told the court after the two o'clock resumption that he was unable to secure witnesses for the matter. The afternoon's early adjournment mirrored that of a early morning break to facilitate the defence meeting with experts from telecoms giant Digicel, who are to give evidence in the matter before the Home Circuit Court..

During the morning sitting, attorney Tom Tavares-Finson applied to the court for an early adjournment to see if the defence lawyer could meet with the Digicel experts as the meeting, originally scheduled for Monday afternoon, did not take place.

The Jamaica Observer is reporting that Murvin -- born Murvin Junior Smith in Port Antonio -- was admitted to a hospital in his hometown last Thursday for treatment related to diabetes and hypertension. The singer's son, Kevin Smith, told the Observer that an autopsy will determine the cause of death. His age has been listed as either 64 or 67 in various reports.

Translation underway to include Jamaican English (or Patois) in Linux-based operating system.....Currently, the Debian software installer is in some 14 languages and website translations in some 36 languages.

DEBIAN, a global computer operating system, aims to add Jamaican English, or Patois, to its installer in order to widen its coverage, according to the project translator, Michelle 'Afifa' Harris.
Its the latest drive to represent the language in formal settings. "When you read the instructions to install software, a lot of time people do not understand what it says. You just press 'Next'. So [Patois] will bring a level of basic understanding to a technical process," she told the Observer in an interview at Cafe Blue in Kingston on Thursday.
Harris, a manager and doctoral student was selected by Debian as the only Jamaican to translate starting January. It was part of a women in technology grant. Harris indicated that offering the installer in Patois removes a linguistic disconnect.
Currently, the Debian software installer is in some 14 languages and website translations in some 36 languages. The project will use the term Jamaican English rather than Patois to describe the language.
