"We got a call this morning from Barbados, CXC's head office, indicating that Dea Thomas, as the top CXC CAPE student for Jamaica, is also the top one for the region," an elated Nadine Molloy, principal of Ardenne, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. Molloy said that subsequent to the call she received a letter indicating that Ardenne, by having the most outstanding candidate overall, becomes the CAPE School of the Year. "So of course Ardenne is quite excited, because Ardenne is indeed the CAPE School of the Year for 2013 in the region," she said.
"The award will be presented in December in Guyana and both Dea and myself — I'm not sure if one of her parents will be invited to attend — will be in attendance. I will make remarks and Dea will give the vote of thanks at that ceremony," Molloy explained. The Math and Science student, who hopes to pursue a career in medical research was, by some weird stroke of faith, able to hear the good news from the CXC herself yesterday.

Quincy Jones sues Michael Jackson estate

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Quincy Jones sued Michael Jackson's estate on Friday claiming he is owed millions in royalties and production fees on some of the superstar's greatest hits.
Quincy Jones
Jones' lawsuit seeks at least $10 million from the singer's estate and Sony Music Entertainment, claiming the entities improperly re-edited songs to deprive him of royalties and production fees. The music has been used in the film ‘This Is It’ and a pair of Cirque du Soleil shows based on the King of Pop's songs, the lawsuit states.

Jones also claims that he should have received a producer's credit on the music in ‘This Is It’.  His lawsuit seeks an accounting of the estate's profits from the works so that Jones can determine how much he is owed. The producer worked with Jackson on three of his most popular solo albums, ‘Off the Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’.
Jackson's estate wrote in a statement that it was saddened by Jones' lawsuit. "To the best of our knowledge, Mr Jones has been appropriately compensated over approximately 35 years for his work with Michael," the statement said. Read more:

A rare find in JAMAICA: Japanese firms says Jamaica’s earth minerals could help them break China’s hold on market

JAPANESE firm Nippon Light Metals Company yesterday revealed that its motivation in spearheading the US$5-million rare earth elements pilot project with the Government of Jamaica is to try to break China's hold on the market.
Operations manager for the project, Tsuyoshi Kawarasaki, told the Jamaica Observer at the opening of the pilot plant yesterday that, given the higher concentration of rare earth elements in Jamaica's red mud deposits compared to global competitors, the island held the key to making Nippon's goal a reality.

"The Jamaican red mud is very excellent compared to the other red mud all over the world, so we chose Jamaican bauxite," he said. Some 17 rare earth elements -- including scandium, yttrium, cerium and erbium -- are to be found in red mud, but Nippon's target, Kawarasaki said, is dysprosium (Dy) which is found in large quantities in China and used in the manufacture of lasers and magnets.
"Our target is Dy, a material or manganate only found in China. China is controlling the market, so we must compete with them," he said. read more:

Baby Born With HIV In Remission, Tests Suggest

Doctors now have convincing evidence that they put HIV into remission, hopefully for good, in a Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus — a medical first that is prompting a new look at how hard and fast such cases should be treated.
The case was reported earlier this year but some doctors were skeptical that the baby was really infected rather than testing positive because of exposure to virus in the mom's blood.
The new report, published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, makes clear that the girl, now 3, was infected in the womb. She was treated unusually aggressively and shows no active infection despite stopping AIDS medicines 18 months ago.
Doctors won't call it a cure because they don't know what proof or how much time is needed to declare someone free of HIV infection, long feared to be permanent. read more
