Principal Raped Boy In Office While Parent Was Outside: Cops

WNCN: News, Weather for Raleigh. Durham, Fayetteville
A former middle school principal in North Carolina is accused of sexually assaulting a student while the boy's unsuspecting parent was outside the room.
David Ellis Edwards, 49, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree forcible sex offense, sexual acts with a student, taking indecent liberties with a minor and crimes against nature, WTVD reported.
Deputies say that between 2009 and 2011, Edwards molested at least three boys between the ages of 11 and 14. At least one of the incidents allegedly occurred in Edward's office while the victim's parent sat in a nearby waiting area.
Edwards resigned from his position at Douglas Byrd Middle School, where he had been principal since 2010, in August, WNCN reported. Before that, he was principal of Ramsey Street Alternative School. Officials believe that all of the sexual assaults took place on the campuses of these two schools. Authorities have also noted they "believe there were more than the three victims,"sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna told the Fayetteville Observer. read more

Gyptian talks Sex, Love and Reggae

GYPTIAN moved out of the dancehall category in 2010 with the catchy dance number Hold Yuh which caught on big time with disc jocks and clubbers in the United States. The singer-songwriter makes another push at the charts in that country with his latest studio effort.

Sex, Love and Reggae is the title of the album which will be released October 29 by VP Records. It comes five months after the Queens, New York company serviced his SLR EP to select markets in the US as a precursor to the main project which hears the singer working with high-profile artistes and producers.

Promotion for Sex, Love and Reggae has already began. Gyptian kicked off a month of performance and radio dates on October 10 in Palm Bay, Florida, and is expected to perform this evening at the Elements venue in Gainesville, also in Florida.
Hold Yuh -- which featured a remix with Trinidad-born rapper Nicky Minaj -- was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America early this year. It was the first such recognition for a reggae song in the US since Damian Marley's Welcome to Jamrock five years earlier. Read more:

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT: Alaithea Whitmore scored 7 distinctions, credit, despite debilitating illness

FOR 16-year-old Alaithea Whitmore, securing seven distinctions and a credit in her Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations was akin to seeing a rainbow following a bleak year marred by ill health and financial woes.
Whitmore. 7 distinctions
The Immaculate Conception High School student said there were many times throughout the school year when achieving academic success seemed like a pipe dream. This was due mostly to a debilitating health condition that causes her to experience pain all over her body, as well as the fact that her mother was not always in a position to provide for her financially.

Whitmore, whose mother peddles in May Pen daily to send her to school, said she was officially diagnosed with scoliosis about two years ago. This diagnosis came about three years after others around her started speculating that there was more behind the pain and fatigue she had been experiencing.
"My grade seven mathematics teacher, she used her stick and she would say, 'Stand up', and when I did, she would say that I'm lean. The pain was there, but I tried to ignore stuff, but then it got worse and so I had to go to the doctor and that's when I got the official diagnosis." read more:

He said that prior to securing the deal with the IMF, the partners were unwilling to commit resources to the country, but that position has changed with the success of the programme so far. read more

EXTORTIONISTS EXTINGUISHED : Government Shutdown: Obama Signs Bill To Reopen Government, End Debt Standoff (UPDATE)

WASHINGTON -- The government shutdown is dead. Obamacare is alive.
The Senate voted 81 to 18 Wednesday night to reopen the federal government and raise the nation's borrowing limit, hours before the Treasury Department faced the possibility of being unable to pay all of America's bills for the first time in modern history.
The House followed suit, voting 285-144 to end the latest damaging battle of divided government in a polarized Congress.
President Barack Obama signed the legislation early Thursday. He said he would reopen the government immediately to "lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease" that settled on the nation and start fixing the damage.
"There is a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the American people that has been lost over the last few weeks," Obama said in a brief speech at the White House. read more

REUTERS: Thirty million people are slaves, half in India: survey shows

LONDON, Oct 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Some 30 million people are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labor, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed on Thursday.
Hands of a SlaveAlmost half are in India, where slavery ranges from bonded labor in quarries and kilns to commercial sex exploitation, although the scourge exists in all 162 countries surveyed by Walk Free, an Australian-based rights group.
Its estimate of 29.8 million slaves worldwide is higher than other attempts to quantify modern slavery. The International Labour Organisation estimates that almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour.
"Today some people are still being born into hereditary slavery, a staggering but harsh reality, particularly in parts of West Africa and South Asia," the report said. read more

Broadcaster Jody-Ann Gray Elated At Possible Penalties For Killing Unborn Children

Broadcaster Jody-Ann Gray says she is happy justice minister Senator Mark Golding is moving to seek justice for unborn children.

Gray was attacked by former co-worker, Wayne Whyte, and another man as she arrived home in Cedar Grove in Portmore, St Catherine on April 4, last year.  She was seven months’ pregnant with Whyte’s child at the time. The justice minister recently told the Senate that he was actively considering how to deal with the murder of a pregnant woman and the rights of her unborn child. There is currently no law in Jamaica to punish a pregnant woman’s killer for taking the life of her unborn child.

However, Golding says he is looking at whether Jamaica’s laws should be amended to that where a person is aware he is killing a pregnant woman there can be some penalty in relation to the unborn child.

Gray says she is elated to see that families in the future could get a chance to experience justice for not just the mother but also the unborn child whose opportunity to enter the world and make a contribution to society may have been taken away. read more

New Film On Dancehall Music Screens At Edna Manley

Much has already been said about the nature and impact of dancehall music, which has its roots in reggae. The debate for and against the popular genre is robust. One side blames and condemns it for many of the socials ills in the country, and the messages of violence, misogyny and homophobia that it conveys.
Claudja Barry
Claudia Barry
The other side claims it is the voice of the people, a medium through which they express their feelings and echo what is happening in the society. So is dancehall influencing certain behaviour and mindsets regarded as unwholesome, or is it just a mirror, reflecting the attitudes and deeds engendered by other social, religious, political and psychosexual dynamics?
The discussion continues on Thursday, when Losing Paradise and Music, a Claudja Barry film, will be screened at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts between 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. as one of the offerings at the three-day Rex Nettleford Conference. read more

Murder Suspect Explains Why He Posted Pic Of Dead Wife On Facebook....Facebook Murder Suspect Says He Posted Photo Of Dead Wife 'To Notify Family'

MIAMI -- MIAMI (AP) — A woman whose husband fatally shot her and posted pictures of her corpse on Facebook was likely cowering and trying to defend herself before she was killed, a police detective testified Tuesday.
Derek MedinaThe hearing testimony by Miami-Dade Detective Jonathan Grossman could undercut 31-year-old Derek Medina's claim that he shot his wife, 26-year-old Jennifer Alonso, in self-defense while she viciously attacked him at their South Miami home.
Grossman said an autopsy and the position of Alonso's body indicates she was on her knees with one arm raised in front of her face when she was shot Aug. 8 during an argument. The trajectories of the 380-caliber bullets indicate they were fired from above her, he added.
"The victim was very low to the ground at the time she was shot," Grossman testified. "The victim appeared to be in a cowering position." read more

Warning: This May Be Bad For Your Health.....Why Your Thong May Be Bad For Your Health

thong healthThey work wonders for panty lines, but sometimes we get the feeling that our thongs are bad for us. Sometimes they're too tight, sometimes they rub the wrong way and sometimes they just don't feel all that clean.
But is the skimpy underwear really bad for our health? We called up Dr. Jill M. Rabin, an Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OB/GYN with Stamford Hospital, in Conn., to get the lowdown on those garments we wear low down. What are our undies really doing to us down there?
Thongs aren't necessarily bad for you.
It really depends on your propensity for infections, Dr. Rabin says. "If somebody's healthy, there aren't really any dangers," she tells us. "The issue is if you have a predisposition to getting infections, either urinary or vaginal, it may be harder to get rid of it if you're wearing a thong." read more

BOEHNER TO BOW? Senate Steps In... Deal 'Imminent'... Boehner May Be Ready To Move Quickly... 'Time To Roll Over'... McCain: 'Republicans Have To Understand We Lost This Battle'... GOP Congresswoman: It's Time 'To Face Reality'...

WASHINGTON -- Moments after House Republicans failed to advance a plan to end the government shutdown and avert default, Senate leaders took matters back into their own hands.
senate budget negotiationAides to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) confirmed the two had reopened talks that were put on hold earlier to allow the House to act first.
A Senate Democratic aide told The Huffington Post on Tuesday evening that a deal between the two was "imminent."
The aide said the deal would hew closely to those earlier talks between Reid and McConnell. It would fund the government through Jan. 15, raise the debt ceiling through Feb. 7, and mandate both chambers appoint budget conferees to produce a broader framework for deficit reduction by Dec. 13. (The aide noted that having a deadline on Friday the 13th didn't bode well for the framework's chances.) A second Democratic aide, who confirmed the substance of the deal, added that because of parliamentary quirks, the budget conference language may be considered as an addendum, and not part of the deal itself. read more...

DEFER OR DEFAULT? Senate Closes In On Deal... Must Get Through The House... GOP Rep: Boehner Will Be Lucky To Find 20 Republicans To Support ....Senate Budget Deal Takes Shape, Facing Tough Odds To Avert Default

senate budget deal
Reid and McConnell
WASHINGTON -- Whatever deal emerges from overnight negotiations in the Senate, Republican lawmakers said they weren't sure it could pass quickly enough in their chamber to avert a default -- or that it would ever see the light of day in the House.
The Treasury Department has warned that sometime on Thursday it may no longer have enough cash on hand to pay all the nation's obligations, setting up a potential default that economists have warned repeatedly may have catastrophic economic consequences.
As of Monday evening, the contours of a deal included reopening the government through Jan. 15 and extending the debt limit until Feb. 15. Both chambers also would have to appoint representatives for a budget conference that would end on or around Dec. 15, with the goal of agreeing to framework for deficit-reduction. Changes to President Barack Obama's health care law would be minimal: Democrats would get a delay of a reinsurance tax to benefit unions, while Republicans would get income verification for Obamacare exchanges. read more
