A community is in mourning after an elementary school teacher was killed in front of her students.

Kellye Taylor, 53, a teacher at Huntington Academy in Long Beach, Calif., was fatally stabbed in the back Friday as she was watching her students in the park for what the school calls "Fun Friday." Some of the two dozen kindergarten-to-sixth-grade children who were playing at the park witnessed the attack, the Associated Press reports. They ran back to the school, which is across from the park, to get help. read more

With six brothers and three sisters to share the paltry earnings of his mother, a vendor at Coronation Market, and his father, a minimum wage worker, Edwards pushed himself to achieve even more.

WASHINGTON -- Whatever deal emerges from overnight negotiations in the Senate, Republican lawmakers said they weren't sure it could pass quickly enough in their chamber to avert a default -- or that it would ever see the light of day in the House.

The Treasury Department has warned that sometime on Thursday it may no longer have enough cash on hand to pay all the nation's obligations, setting up a potential default that economists have warned repeatedly may have catastrophic economic consequences.

As of Monday evening, the contours of a deal included reopening the government through Jan. 15 and extending the debt limit until Feb. 15. Both chambers also would have to appoint representatives for a budget conference that would end on or around Dec. 15, with the goal of agreeing to framework for deficit-reduction. Changes to President Barack Obama's health care law would be minimal: Democrats would get a delay of a reinsurance tax to benefit unions, while Republicans would get income verification for Obamacare exchanges. read more

Powerful earthquake felt in several Caribbean countries

The quake is the most powerful felt in Trinidad and Tobago since 1997 when an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the twin island republic.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted several Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana on Friday night, the Trinidad-based Seismic Unit of the University of the West Indies (UWI) confirmed Saturday.

It said that the quake, which was also felt in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines occurred at 10.10 pm (local time) and was located north of the Paria Peninsula in Trinidad.

The Guyana-based Demerara Waves website said that the tremor was felt as far away as Corriverton, Berbice, Linden, Bartica, Mahdia and the North West District. read more: 

NSA Reportedly Collecting Millions Of Email, Instant Message Contact Lists

WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Security Agency has been sifting through millions of contact lists from personal email and instant messaging accounts around the world — including those of Americans — in its effort to find possible links to terrorism or other criminal activity, according to a published report.

The Washington Post reported late Monday that the spy agency intercepts hundreds of thousands of email address books every day from private accounts on Yahoo, Gmail, Facebook and Hotmail that move though global data links. The NSA also collects about a half million buddy lists from live chat services and email accounts.

The Post said it learned about the collection tactics from secret documents provided by NSA leaker Edward Snowden and confirmed by senior intelligence officials. It was the latest revelation of the spy agency's practices to be disclosed by Snowden, the former NSA systems analyst who fled the U.S. and now resides in Russia. read more...

Tessanne scores again on The Voice.....Wins battle round

JAMAICAN singer Tessanne Chin scored another win on her journey through NBC's talent show The Voice aired last night.

Chin, who wowed all four judges during the blind auditions broadcast two weeks ago, went into the battle rounds of the competition and was pitted against her Adam Levine-coached teammate Donna Allen performing Emeli Sandé's Next To Me. Prior to the performance, Allen heaped praises on Chin, calling her "a phenomenal vocalist". As she prepared to take to the stage, the Hideaway singer stated: "I'm not trying to out-sing Donna, it's not gonna happen. I want to win this for anyone who has a dream and wants to make something of themself."

The two singers then went at it, each trying to convince their coach, in whose hands the decision rested, to keep them on his team. Chin utilised range and tone, while Allen stuck to raw power and passion to produce an electrifying performance. read more 

ST. JAMES, JAMAICA: Police name persons of interest in St James triple murder

SPRING MOUNT, St James — The St James police yesterday published the names of three 'persons of interest' in Sunday's brazen murder of three men in this community.

The police are asking Garfield Douglas, also called 'British'; a man known only as Miller; and another man who goes by the aliases 'Mad Cliff' and 'Bigga' to report to the nearest police station with their attorneys. They are wanted for questioning in connection with the murders of 19-year-old farmer Tevin Farquharson, also called 'Duck'; Oraine Dunkley, 26, a labourer who was also called 'Chicken'; and 50-year-old vendor Canute Dennis, who was also known as 'Ragga'.

A highly placed police source told the Jamaica Observer that Sunday's attack was in reprisal for an incident last Friday in which one of the three persons of interest was shot and injured. The altercation reportedly sparked a stone- throwing melee after which guns were brought into play. Our source said that the man who was allegedly shot did not report the matter to the police. Instead, he went to a hospital for treatment and discharged himself.

A 101 Year Old Marathon Runner Discovered The Secret Behind Limitless Energy!!!...."He told me that years ago he discovered that when he ate a combination of broccoli, green tea extract and spirulina his energy levels dramatically increased."

American Bible scholar claims story of Jesus fabricated by Roman aristocrats

An American Bible scholar says he has discovered that the entire story of Jesus was made up by Roman aristocrats. According to Joseph Atwill, Christianity did not start as a religion, but was instead created as a sophisticated propaganda tool to pacify subjects of the Roman Empire. Atwill's claim is reported in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.

IN JAMAICA: Historic - St Thomas fourth formers ace CSEC maths Academic excellence the norm at Morant Bay High

The 22 Morant Bay High School fourth form students who took mathematics at the most recent sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams have created history at the St Thomas institution - twenty one of them gained grade one, with the other receiving two.

And if that's not enough good news, the school is also celebrating another achievement as 183 of the approximately 205 students who sat the CSEC exams gained five or more subjects, with some passing as many as 12 in one sitting.

Senior Vice Principal Lorveen Bell-Coates said her students have always been passing 12 and 13 subjects in one sitting, however, this is the first year that so many of them passed five or more subjects. Bell-Coates cited the performance of her son Kadane, who gained 12 ones and a two in 2010 and another student, Lerron Smith, who yielded similar results in 2012, as two examples of this success over the years. IN JAMAICA: Three Dead After Shooting Outside St James Supermarket

Three men were killed yesterday as a result of a gun attack outside a supermarket next door to the Spring Mount police station in St James.

Two persons died on the scene, while the third succumbed to his injuries at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

The owner of the supermarket was shot in the foot.

"The parish is haemorrhaging from the number of shootings and also the hospital resources are being stretched unnecessarily because of gunmen who have literally waged war on the citizens in the parish," said Montego Bay businessman and operator of the Last Resort Detective Agency, Henry McCurdy.

The businessman, who is also the People's National Party (PNP) caretaker for North West St James, called for the stakeholders within the parish to try to fix the situation as soon as possible.

"There are a number of companies that are being forced to find additional resources to transport staff whenever late or early morning shifts are required, because their staff members are afraid to leave their homes," said McCurdy. read more...

Michael Douglas Admits He Lied About His Cancer

Michael Douglas is coming clean.

In an interview with Samuel L. Jackson on the U.K. talk show "This Morning," the 69-year-old admitted that the type of cancer he battled in 2010 was not stage four throat cancer -- he was actually diagnosed with tongue cancer.

"This was right before I had to go on a big tour for 'Wall Street,' so we kind of said, 'There’s no way we can cancel the tour and say we don’t feel well,'" he explained. "So you know, I said, 'You've just got to come out and just tell them I've got cancer and that’s that.'"

Douglas revealed his diagnosis in August 2010, but decided to keep his tongue cancer a secret after his doctor, who'd found a walnut-size tumor at the base of his tongue, revealed the surgery could impact his appearance in a major way. read more....

ONLY IN JAMAICA: Jailed over 100 times, a murder convict wants to become a JP.

BORN again ex-convict David Chang, 46, who has been jailed over 100 times, has 36 convictions, and has served eight years in prison for manslaughter, is now asking that his record be expunged so that he can serve his community as a Justice of the Peace (JP).

"I have gone to prison four times. I went to jail over 100 times and is one time out of all that time I went to jail innocently. I used to be in and out of jail, because I was an allround criminal," Chang told the Jamaica Observer in an interview on Thursday. "I used to pick pocket, grab chain, break into house, rob people, loitering — I get charge for all those things — name them and I was charged for them." But according to Chang, who is now the pastor of the 50-member Majesty Transformation Fellowship Church in Majesty Gardens, his sole desire now is to serve his community and give back to the nation as much as he possibly can.

"I have been out (of prison) 15 years now. I am a reverend, I have a visa, I travel overseas. I have been doing a lot of community work and I can recommend anybody like any other pastor. But what is happening with me is that the conviction is still in the way," he said. read more...

Horror of a 14-year-old girl in prison......Teen runs away for two days, spends year locked away

As the 14-year-old girl sat inside a cramped cell at the New Horizon Adult Correctional Centre, she said to her herself: "If only I had listened to my grandmother. If my father was alive, he would not make me end up in this situation."

The teenager is not shy to admit that running away for two days to sleep with an older man was the wrong thing to do.

"It was peer pressure. Sometimes friends influence you to do things and I was influenced," the teenager told the Jamaica Observer. The child had left for school and never returned home after hanging out with friends in Spanish Town.

Neither she nor her grandmother could imagine that the act would land her in a maximum security adult penal facility for one year. Her life was not an easy one, as her father was shot dead during a robbery in Honduras when she was a mere infant. She also lives in a depressed community where most of her female role models bleach their skins and talk openly about their sexual exploits. Government Shutdown Negotiations Stuck On Sequestration.....DEMS HOLD FIRM ON SPENDING LEVELS... REJECT SENATE 'COMPROMISE'... W.H. SHOOTS DOWN HOUSE RANSOM...

WASHINGTON -- As the United States government approaches a deadline for raising the debt limit and the government shutdown nears its second week, Senate Democrats are taking a stand on sequestration.

The party’s leadership rejected an offer from Senate Republicans on Saturday morning mainly because the proposal locked in those budget cuts for too long.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) called it the “single biggest sticking point” in negotiations, while his counterpart in leadership, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) deemed it the central dispute.

“The parties have different views. We passed a budget of $1.058 trillion and they passed one -- the Ryan budget -- [at] $988 [billion],” Schumer said. “So that is a serious issue.”

Democrats' stand over sequestration is a nice surprise for some progressive members who worried leadership would cave in this area. But instead, they were emboldened after polling showed them with the upper hand in budget fights. Democrats also noted that they, too, were concerned about the severity of the cuts. read more....

MANCHESTER, JAMAICA : 68-y-o man shoots 75-y-o wife

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — The Manchester police say that they now have in custody the 68-year old man who allegedly shot his 75-year-old wife at their home on Knowles Crescent Friday morning.

His licensed firearm, which he allegedly hid after committing the act, was also found. According to the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) the couple was having marital problems.

Friday morning while the wife was exiting the kitchen at about 5:00am the husband reportedly confronted her with the gun and fired shots at her, the police say. She reportedly ran, jumped a fence and was assisted by a neighbour who called the cops. Police say that she is now in hospital.

The husband whom it is said was a pastor overseas allegedly hit a man with his motorcar as he tried to get away from the scene. Reports are that the man is also nursing injuries in the hospital. Read more:

JAMAICA'S 2014 World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) dream came crashing to a humiliating end as they were blanked 2-0 by the United States at Sporting Park, Kansas City, yesterday evening.

Police say Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son has died

The 2-year-old son of Vikings running backAdrian Peterson has died.

Police in South Dakota confirmed to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the 2-year-old boy died, days after he was allegedly beaten by his mother’s boyfriend. Robert Joseph Patterson was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault, and the state’s attorney is now reviewing the matter for possible additional charges.

The names of the boy and his mother are being withheld, at the family’s request. Peterson briefly addressed reporters today and asked for privacy for his family.

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced Thursday that Republicans would seek a deal to raise the country's borrowing limit for six weeks. While potentially a breakthrough for stalled budget negotiations, the proposal wouldn't reopen the government, raising fears the shutdown could drag on for weeks.

The longer the shutdown persists, the worse it'll get. Hundreds of thousands of furloughed workers will miss paydays and some government safety net programs will unravel.

Candace Holmes worries her phone will get shut off soon. Holmes, 65, is a furloughed employee at the Environmental Protection Agency. Since the furlough, she's filed for unemployment and started shopping at the dollar store for her food.

"When are they going to recall us to work?" Holmes said. "You know, something I can tell my landlord. My phone company don't want to hear it -- they want their payments. It's been really bad." read more...

Not guilty - Christine Hewitt's husband, his brother freed — prosecution fails to establish case for murder

DAVID Gordon and his brother Worthsworth were yesterday acquitted of the murder of David's estranged wife and television personality Christine Hewitt.

Both men left the St Catherine Circuit Court in Spanish Town elated after Justice Leighton Pusey instructed the panel of 12 jurors to return a formal verdict of not guilty. Pusey's instruction to the jury came after he informed them that the prosecution had not satisfied the ingredients, in law, to establish that a murder had been committed.

"We don't know if the vehicle caught fire on accident or [if it was] deliberately [set ablaze]," Pusey said. In dismissing the men, Pusey told Worthsworth that there was no reason for him to have been charged in the first place. He told David that the prosecution did not prove its case against him. IN JAMAICA: Issa Trust Foundation Donates 1,000 Books

FREE HILL Primary and Infant School in St Mary received a special gift from the Issa Trust Foundation (ITF) on Wednesday.

The foundation, which has been running several child-focused initiatives over the last two weeks, distributed more than 1,000 books to the school's library.

The books were collected by Lilliane Bastien, a teacher based in Canada, who encouraged her students and their parents to donate more than 100 boxes of books, toys and medical supplies for less fortunate children in Jamaica.

Martin Murphy, principal at Free Hill Primary and Infant School, told The Gleaner that the donation was greatly appreciated and promised that his pupils would put them to good use. read more...

Tendulkar to retire after 200th test Last test will be against the West Indies

NEW DELHI, India (AP) — Indian star batsman Sachin Tendulkar Thursday morning announced his retirement from international cricket, saying his 200th test next month will be the last of a glorious 24-year career.

The 40-year-old Mumbai batsman is the most prolific in international cricket history with 15,837 runs in 198 tests and 18,426 runs in 463 one-day internationals. He also holds the record for most centuries in tests (51) and ODIs (49). He made his test debut for India in 1989 at the age of 16. Tendulkar, who has already retired from limited over internationals, made the announcement in a statement.

"All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India," Tendulkar said. "I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I have ever done since I was 11 years old." Read more: 

WESTMORELAND, JAMAICA: Police kill alleged gangsters Seize guns, ammo in massive Westmoreland operatio

ALMA, Westmoreland — The police were up to late yesterday still unable to identify members of the feared Alma Gang, who were killed in an alleged early morning gunfight with law enforcement officers yesterday.

Six illegal firearms and dozens of rounds of assorted ammunition were recovered during the massive operation, dubbed Operation Resilience, which has been set up to target gang members.

According to head of the Westmoreland Police Division, Superintendent Carol McKenzie, about 5:30 am yesterday the team came under heavy gunfire as they approached a location in the hilly section of the Alma community. The fire was returned and a shoot-out ensued. After the shooting ceased, the police found the bodies of two men with gunshot wounds.

The police believe that other members of the gang, including its leader, were also shot and injured in the operation. However, they said the injured men escaped leaving behind the cache of firearms and ammunition. The weapons included an AK 47 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, one Berretta 380 semi-automatic pistol, one .45 calibre pistol and two 9mm calibre handguns Read more: 

Kanye Goes On 'Kimmel' — Delivers EPIC Monologue

Last month, Kanye West lashed out at Jimmy Kimmel over Twitter for a sketch on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" that made fun of an earnest interview West conducted with the BBC. On Wednesday's episode of the talk show, West sat on Kimmel's couch to clear the air -- and ended the interview with a lengthy, stream-of-consciousness rant.

While the conversation was not contentious at all, and West frequently smiled and joked with Kimmel, he did not apologize for his tweets. Up front, he emphasized that all of his public actions are authentic. "I've never done a publicity stunt in my life," he said.

"I'm not running for office," West told Kimmel. "I'm just here to make good music and make people feel good when they hear my music. When I did that interview, I was really vocal about a lot of things I had been dealing with over the last ten years, when I had put in the classification as just a celebrity."

Change Comes For 'Voice' Fans - TVJ Provides Live Option After Viewers' Social Media Rants

Following a display of dissatisfaction from social-network users over the inconvenience of having to watch a delayed airing of The Voice on Monday night, Television Jamaica (TVJ) has responded. The angst came from TVJ's acquisition of rights to exclusively air The Voice in Jamaica. This meant the airing onNBC, the owner of the show, was blocked by local cable providers.

The blocking of the NBC feed aside, viewers were not able to see the show until 9 p.m., a full two hours later.

Interest in the US programme in Jamaica increased following the auditionof local talent, Tessanne Chin.

Chin had an impressive blind audition performance and advanced to a later round on the show's second night. read more...
