IN JAMAICA: 16-Y-O Boy Wanted For More Than 10 Murders Captured (GLEANER MINUTE VIDEO)

A sixteen-year-old boy, who was on the Kingston Central most wanted list, has been captured. 

The teen, whose name cannot be released, was wanted for more than 10 murders, several cases of shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm, was captured on Text Lane in Kingston about 12:30 p.m., today. The police say they were on patrol in the area when the boy was seen, accosted and searched. 

One 9mm Browning pistol and nine 9mm cartridges were found in his possession. He is due to be questioned by the Police in the presence of his attorney and parents later this week. Read More...

"As far as our study can reveal, he seems to be able to develop more power than other runners," study co-author Dr. Jorge Hernandez, a professor of biophysics at the university, told The Huffington Post in an email. "A way of doing it is that he finds a way to reduce the area (cross section, as we call it) he presents to the air. JAMAICA'S 51st INDEPENDENCE: Olive Lewin, OM, heads list of 138 honourees

THE late Jamaica folk music pioneer, researcher , performer and educator , Olive Wilhelmina Mahoney Lewin leads the field of 138 Jamaicans being honoured for service to the nation on the National Honours and Awards list, released last night.

Lewin, who will receive the Order of Merit (OM), posthumously, the country’s third highest honour, was born in Vere, Clarendon. She is a fellow of Trinity College, London, and an associate of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal School of Music. She also held the positions of director of arts and culture in the Office of the Prime Minister, director of the Jamaica Institute of Folk Culture, and directed the Jamaica Orchestra for Youth. Lewin wrote several books and made numerous recordings of folk music, performed by the Jamaican Folk Singers. She has also been honoured by the United Nations, the Organisation of American States, the Government of France and by academia for her outstanding lifelong contribution to the arts. She died on April 10 this year, aged 85. Read more: 

IN MOSCOW: I'm ready, says Usain Bolt

MOSCOW, Russia (AFP) — Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt has declared himself 'ready' in his bid to defend his 200m crown and reclaim the title in the blue-riband 100m at next week's World Athletics Championships.

Bolt, who was talking at a sponsors' event at Gorky Park on Sunday, now goes straight into training for the August 10-18 champs at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Tawana Brawley Rape Hoax Leads To Defamation Damage Payout 26 Years Later

Tawana Brawley, who fabricated
 a sensational rape story in 1987,
may be forced to finally pay damages
 to one of the men falsely accused.

The nation was stunned in 1987 by an African-American teenager's accusation that she had been brutally gang raped by a group of white men, including a local prosecutor and a local police officer. Those accusations turned out to be an elaborate hoax -- and decades later, one of the men wrongfully accused in the fabricated horrific crime is finally receiving reparations payments.

Eleven years after Tawana Brawley's sensational story was disproved, former prosecutor Steven Pagones successfully sued Brawley, her attorneys and Rev. Al Sharpton -- who had gotten involved with the case -- for slander, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. Although the others paid up, for years Brawley refused to pay the $185,000 in damages, worth closer to $400,000 with interest.

Brawley now works in Richmond, Va. as a nurse at the The Laurels of Bon Air nursing home, under a different name, Tawana V. Gutierrez, according to the Journal. A court has ordered Brawley's employer to garnish her wages in order to begin paying Pagones.

So far, Pagones has received around $3,700, the Journal reports. Read More...

UPDATE: Woman Loses Leg, Four Others Sustain Injuries After Car Crashes Into Bus Stop, Shop (VIDEO)

A 56-year-old woman is without a leg this evening while four others, including two children, are nursing injuries after they were hit by a motor car this morning along the Montpellier main road near Montego Bay, St James. 

The incident took place about 7:30 this morning when the driver of a Toyota Corolla motor car hit a woman as she stood on the side of the road with her three-month-old child. The driver then reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a bus stop, injuring the other pedestrians in the process. 

The vehicle subsequently crashed into a shop, pinning a woman beneath it. She was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to remove a severely injured leg. The woman and her three-month-old baby were also taken to hospital, while a 14-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl are nursing injuries. Read More...

In October 2008 the nation was rocked by news of the discovery of the decomposing remains of an 11-year-old girl who was found dumped in bushes in Cypress Hill in the community of Belvedere, St Andrew.

DNA tests and identification by relatives revealed that the body was that of Ananda Dean. The child had gone missing after she left the Swallowfield All Age School on Whitehall Avenue after the closing school bell rang.

But that was almost five years ago. And for the little girl's parents they are finding it hard to move on from that point. "Five years have passed but the pain has not eased. I have not gotten any closure. Each passing day you wonder what she would look like. However I am comforted by the fact that it was not her fault and she must be in heaven," Richard Dean, Ananda's father, told the Jamaica Observer. Read more:

The deafening silence comes at a time when the Barack Obama administration in the United States (US) has admitted that it can read and store the phone records of millions of Americans.

Last Wednesday, the Obama administration made public a previously top-secret order that directed the telecommunications company Verizon to hand over an immense number of Americans' phone records.

IN JAMAICA: 11-year-old Outspoken Tashanique James, shot and killed by gunmen in Denham Town on Emancipation Day

THE TEARS meandered slowly down her face as Yahola 'Teesha' Anderson asked the question that so many Jamaican mothers have asked in recent times when their child has been killed: "Why?"

"How dem could just fire shot so and tek mi baby life? She don't even live no life," Anderson lamented to The Gleaner yesterday as she reacted to the fatal shooting of her 11-year-old daughter, Tashanique James, in the west Kingston community of Denham Town on Thursday.

The youngster, who everyone knew as 'Dana', was one of five persons shot in two gang-related incidents in the community while Jamaicans marked Emancipation Day.

Another victim, a 12-year-old girl, was treated at hospital and released.

Less than 24 hours after that shooting, Anderson was headed to the morgue for another look at the lifeless body of her daughter, the Clan Carthy Primary student who was headed to grade six with big plans for her future.

"No care how you are sad, Dana always made you laugh," said Anderson, with the only hint of a smile for the entire time she spoke with our news team.

EDITORIAL : The world will be watching Jamaica’s ambassadors in Moscow

FORMER Trinidadian sprinter and Olympic medallist Mr Ato Boldon is correct. There won’t be the usual “anticipation and hype” entering next week’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

A large part of the reason is the recent rash of adverse drug test results for leading athletes, including three Jamaican sprint stars, Mrs Veronica Campbell Brown, Miss Sherone Simpson and Mr Asafa Powell, as well as the leading American sprinter Mr Tyson Gay.

It doesn’t matter that in the case of the Jamaicans the banned substances apparently entered the body via supplements and that they themselves have denied “knowingly” doing anything wrong. Seemingly, it also doesn’t matter that some of these offences are likely to be deemed “minor” when final investigations are done. Read more:

A teenager has become the youngest person to qualify as a barrister in the 600 year history of the profession – so she can work in the Bahamas. American student Gabrielle Turnquest was called to the Bar of England and Wales after passing her exams at just 18. The average lawyer undertakes the Bar Professional Training Course when they are 27.

However, the young high-flyer will not go on to work in the UK as she wants to return to her native America to qualify as a lawyer there. But her success means she is also called to the Bahamas Bar, the country of her parents, and she hopes to work there.

Gabrielle took the course, at the University of Law, along with her sister Kandi, who also passed her exams but at the ripe old age of 22. The teenager, who is originally from Windermere, Florida, hopes eventually to be a fashion law specialist. Read More...

Never Forget: Trayvon’s Hoodie May Be Displayed In African American History Museum (VIDEO of Trayvon minutes before he was killed)

Lonnie Bunch, the director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, has expressing interest in procuring the hoodie worn by 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012, when he was profiled, followed and ultimately shot through the heart by killer George Zimmerman, reports the Washington Post.

According to the organisers of the event, the craft market has long been overlooked by governments. However, this competition signals the end of that era.

According to Damion Crawford, minister of state in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, he and Dr Wykeham McNeill, tourism minister, were tired of hearing craft vendors complain about not maximising returns from their work.

JAMAICA Emancipendence : 175 years after 'full free'.......

According to the popular view, emancipation from slavery in Jamaica took place on August 1, 1834, which was 179 years ago today. But there was an apprenticeship period for four years. So "full free" as it was called took place on August 1, 1838, which is 175 years ago today.

What we have in Jamaica is an "Emancipendence" celebration which covers both our emancipation on August 1 and our political independence on August 6. This is similar to the Jews whose Passover is about liberation form slavery and political independence. It seems that some people would like to bring back slavery. Today, the euphemism "human trafficking" is used, but it is nothing more than slavery, albeit in modern times. Many times when the list of missing persons is read on radio or TV some wonder if the missing persons have been enslaved.

This is a greater reason to celebrate the anniversary of our emancipation. Not only should we celebrate, but we should also be taking the steps necessary to protect our emancipation just as we should protect Jamaica's political independence.

Jamaica spent a lot of money last year for our 50th anniversary celebration of political independence. In these hard times we could not replicate that with an equally fantastic celebration of our 175th anniversary of 'full free'. But we should still be mindful of the gains made by our national heroes and others. Read more:
