IN JAMAICA: 105-y-o Centenarian forced out of the constabulary by 'OBEAH'

Cyril Goffe, a former police officer
tells how he was forced to
 leave the Jamaica Constabulary
 Force after nine years

HE is 105 years old, yet Cyril Goffe walked through his front door eager to share his life's story with the Jamaica Observer, all senses intact. A former policeman, Goffe said that what existed over 100 years ago was heavenly, compared to what he is hearing of today.
"What I am hearing of today and what I have passed through, I should say my days were heavenly," the centenarian told the Sunday Observer last week from his Kingston 19 home. "As far as I can remember, the happenings were nothing serious. Mark you, the place was not rich in cash, but it was rich in unity and love," he said.
Born in Rock River, Clarendon, on April 5, 1908, Goffe was the only boy of six children for his parents. He admitted his unhappiness in being the only boy growing up with five girls.
"I didn't feel so well," he said. "The area was full of other boys, and when I would care to go and play with them, that was the time I would be called to do something that one of the girls could do," he recalled. READ More...

Led by performances from Kirani James, Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Damar Forbes, the regional athletes lit Paris with outstanding performances in their respective events.
Bolt was made to work hard for a victory in the half-lap as compatriot Warren Weir stayed with him into the top bend before the world recordholder pulled away to win in a world leading and meet record of 19.73. Weir stayed below the 20-second barrier with 19.92 and Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre finished third in 20.07.
Jamaicans Jason Young (20.12, SB) and Nickel Ashmeade (20.21) completed the top-five finishers.
Fraser-Pryce shrugged off the disappointment of Birmingham to edge Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria to win the women's 100 metres in a season's best 10.92. She lost to the Nigerian over the 200m about a week ago but took the shorter distance to Okagbare's 10.93. READ More...

PLANE CRASH-LANDS IN SAN FRANCISCO: Asiana Airlines Plane Crashes At San Francisco International Airport (VIDEO)

SAN FRANCISCO -- An Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea, crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, forcing passengers to jump down the emergency inflatable slides to safety. There were early reports of injuries, but the extent wasn't immediately clear.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said Flight 214 crashed while landing at 11:26 PDT. A video clip posted to YouTube showed smoke coming from a jet on the tarmac. Passengers could be seen jumping down the emergency slides.
Television footage showed the top of the fuselage was burned away and the entire tail was gone. One engine appeared to have broken away. Pieces of the tail were strewn about the runway. Emergency responders could be seen walking inside the burned-out wreckage.
It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the plane as it was landing, but some eyewitnesses described the aircraft doing a cartwheel and other said that it appeared to sway back and forth kicking up dust. Many said the tail fell off. READ More....

EGYPT ON EDGE: Coptic Christian Priest Shot Dead... Country Tense After Wave Of Violence Kills 36... Interim President: 'Egypt Is For Everyone'

CAIRO — Security forces boosted positions near a protest camp by supporters of ousted leader Mohammed Morsi as authorities Saturday plotted their next moves after violence claimed at least 36 lives across the country and deepened the battle lines in the divided nation.
In a further sign of the concern the unrest could spin out of control, Egypt's interim president held talks with the army chief and interior minister – whose snub of Morsi's authority earlier this week tipped the scales against Egypt's first elected leader.
The Interior Ministry added that at least eight policemen have been killed since the eve of the anti-Morsi protests on June 30, marking his anniversary in office. No other details on the deaths were immediately given.
Officials have briefly detained top figures from Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and have kept the toppled president from the public eye, under detention in an undisclosed location. READ More...

“Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” That quote has been variously attributed to people who are, indisputably, great artists: T.S. Eliot and Picasso, for starters. Those who create at a high level will be the first to acknowledge that even their greatest works aren’t completely original. It’s just that some artists are better than others when it comes to appropriating the past and incorporating it into their own work. READ More...

OLYMPIAN Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce sharpening for 200m rewards

Fraser-Pryce
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, last year, tested the water doing the sprint double at a major championship. Now she is a legitimate contender to take both 100 and 200 metres at the upcoming World Championship.

Fraser-Pryce surprised many by taking the 200m silver medal in London in a personal best of 22.09 and she’s positioning herself as a threat to the do the sprint double in Moscow. But the double Olympic 100m gold medallist admits there is a lot more work needed for her to reach that level in the 200m.
“Last year was a bit of testing the water for me, where I did the 100 and 200 at a major championships, which was rewarding. Now that I look back at it, I can take a lot from it,” Fraser Pryce said at a Diamond League press conference Friday.
“I’m definitely working more at the 200 because I can be a little off in the 200 because I’m still trying to learn the event. I’m not one of those athletes who will have a burst of energy to the line. I attack it from the start. The more 200s I do, the more I’ll know whether this works or that works,” she added. A Policeman watches over evicted gay men
Members of a gay clan wept with despair late yesterday, after a large contingent of police booted them from a previously abandoned house in upscale Millsborough Avenue, St Andrew, in which they lived after fleeing from the Golden Triangle.
"If mi go back home, mi dead," wailed one young man, whose face was bleached white, not unlike other members of his group.
The team of lawmen, wearing dust masks and armed with high-powered weapons, encircled the men in spectacular fashion and herded them out into the yard as they attempted to make their escape.
"Mi a beg you a week to find somewhere else," pleaded another. "Why the picture (photographs)?" he protested, as a team of journalists and photographers accompanied the police party on the premises.
The police told The Gleaner the building would be demolished today, after residents complained that the men have been wreaking havoc in the usually quiet neighbourhood. READ More...

4 year old NATASHA BROWN'S FUNERAL IN TRELAWNY: 'There is a dress code for church!' Culture minister laments erosion of standards at murdered 4-y-o’s funeral

Lisa Hannah Speaks at Funeral
DUANVALE, Trelawny — Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna has called on the Church to insist that persons passing through its doors adhere to a dress code.
"As a young woman myself, over the past months I recognise that there is another value system in our midst that is being eroded — just the simple way we come, as women and men, to pay tribute to church and how we put ourselves together. The time has come for the church to say there is a dress code for church," Hanna said. She further noted: "We have to set standards, we have to set respect, and we must never be afraid as the people of this great country to tell the truth when the truth must be heard".

That operation led them on the trail of the minivan, which was intercepted in the Buff Bay area at about 12:30 pm immediately after it allegedly unloaded a container with the contraband. The four men on board were arrested and their cellular phones confiscated. The police said at least two of the men gave Kingston addresses.
